Anyway to fix the "stuck" eyecolor on vampires?

This has honestly been annoying the hell out of me since Skyrim launched, but seeing a Vampire-centric expansion come out and the problem still not resolved.. Yeah, I'm a bit irritated you might say.

The problem for those that don't know what I speak of, is that when you become a vampire your eyes change. This wouldn't matter, except that when you use showracemenu to modify your eyes (using modded vampire race-enabled eyes) it doesn't work. Well that's not entirely true, it does work, but only for the current game session. The second you exit the game and reload your save, the eyes are back to vampire defaults.

In vanilla I sort of just accepted it as an unsolvable oddity, since there was only one eye-color ever intended for them. Now with Dawnguard however.. The game actually has three sets of Vampire eyes, which are used on differing NPC's. For some reason though, neither those eyes or any other modded vampire eyes will stick to the player.. they always get reset, always.

Can anything be done about this? Anything at all?

Addendum:
I did find a quick and dirty method of making this work, but I'm afraid it might end up causing errors in the long run.
What I did was change it so each vampire race had their default eyes set to "none" instead of the usual vampire eyes. From simply doing this, the player character's eyes rollback to their human forms, allowing their eyes to be modified however one sees fit.

My concern however.. is that many Vampire NPC's have their eye colors set simply to "default" - and with default being set to none now in the race.. I'd expect to see a bunch of eyeless NPC's now. Oddly enough though, from a little testing so far.. this doesn't seem to be the case? The NPC's definitely show up eyeless in the editor, but ingame any vampire I spawned next to me definitely had the correct eyes. I'm not sure how that is, though..
