Anyway to pack an ini in a bsa

Post » Tue Nov 20, 2012 9:43 am

Is it possible to do this?

I've tried using the Archive.exe found in the Skyrim folder with no success.

It seems the Creation Kit only uploads your esp and bsa into Steam Workshop. Is there anyway to tell it to upload an ini file also?

Thanks to anyone who can help.

It should be picking up the ini file automatically as long as it's the same naming format as your ESP and BSA. Provided they haven't changed something since this feature was tested during the CK beta.

Okay, here are my steps, let me know if I am doing something wrong

1. Place my textures, meshes, interface, esp, and ini in Skyrim/Data

2. Open Creation kit, and load my esp into data

3. Go to File -> Upload plugin and archive to steam

When I go through these steps, a window appears named "Add/remove files to archive". There are a few dds files inside the window, but not my textures, meshes, interface, or ini file. The options I have are "Pack Files", and "Cancel".

I click pack files, and it says "archive process failed"

I have also used the Archive.exe to pack my textures, meshes, interface, and ini seperate. The archive.exe tool allowed me to at least drop the ini into the window, but after creating the bsa out of it, and testing it in game, it is clear the ini is not present because my mod doesn't work, unless I manually add the ini into skyrim/data.

If I recall, Steam will grab it and distribute it alongside the BSA/ESP, so it doesn't need to be in the BSA.

Edit: Yeah, that is right now that I think about it. INI files were landing in Skyrim\ and not Skyrim\Data\ at one time during the beta, so the Workshop will definitely grab it if it's there..

I just tried that, and the ini file was put into Skyrim, instead of Skyrim/data like you said. Is there anyway to fix this?

You could use BSA Opt, and make your own BSA. Then when you put that in your Data folder, and archive to steam, it'll say there is already BSA file there do you want to use it? (Something to that effect). Select yes, and it'll use the BSA you made.

I already have my bsa, esp and ini file all ready to upload to steam, inside my skyrim/data folder

I than upload the 3 items to steam workshop, but when you subscribe to my mod, steam downloads the ini file to the Skyrim folder, not the Skyrim/data folder

If your ini files goes into the Data folder, can't you put it inside your BSA?

No. An ini file is not a valid type to include in a BSA. The game won't read it from there even if you force the issue with external tools.

So is there anyway to correct the skyrim launcher from placing the ini file in the Skyrim folder instead of Skyrim/Data?

Thanks for the help all

You're sure the file doesn't work when placed there?

INIs don't work if not right next to their corresponding plugin. Just tested with Code Comparer and profiling was not enabled as the INI dictates when properly placed. Not sure if they've fixed it, but INIs editing the same settings 'win/won' according to their alphabetical properties rather than their plugins' load indices. A.ini would be overridden by B.ini etc. even if A.esp were loaded later than b.esp. I'll have to check sometime soon unless another gets to it first (currently spring cleaning/reinstalling OS').

No, it doesn't work when placed in the Skyrim folder, only in the Skyrim/Data

Is their anyway to get the launcher to place it in the correct location (Skyrim/Data)?

The launcher code would have to be updated, meaning Bethesda would need to fix that themselves. It's outside of our control.

Okay, I thought it may come down to them to fix this issue. For now, I will just post a download link for the ini on the Steam Workshop description.

Thanks for the insight and help all.

Or you could upload it with the WS and have a MessageBox pop up telling users to move it from Skyrim\ to Skyrim\Data\ when the mod initializes. Hopefully this gets fixed.
