appearance changes throughout the game

Post » Tue Mar 08, 2011 9:24 pm

I Wondered If appearences would change throughout the game of both the npc and the player.

I think it would be pretty neat if you could only get a certain style of hair if you grew it long enough and that it cannot simply be aquired by choosing it from menu. Ofcourse all hairstyles in my opinion should be available from the first customization options.

The same goes for facial hair in my opinion.

Tattoo's should be changable whenever you want them to. But only in tattoo parlors.

Scars should be unremovable. It's just not realistic if you can altar scars.

Discuss.

As someone who spends alot of time on the "look" of my characters, I don't want anything (Fable's awful "aging" system, hair growth, gaining scars in battle, etc) to change them without my consent.

So, hairdresser would be fine, but nothing automatic.

Yep. You copied my votes exactly.

No removal of tattoos. Not feasible. Unless you can convince a mage to give you a "magicka surgery" and get skin grafts somehow.

Also, the hairdresser idea is reasonable, but I think the more these types of ideas come up, the closer people will think TES is getting to an MMO-style gameplay. I'm not sure the hair and tattoo changes really "fit" in Skyrim. I don't want to be too distracted by being concerned over my character's appearance, when I should be focusing on more important things. So I would think the design to give you full customization at the beginning is good enough, as long as there are plenty of new options.

What Kiralyn said!

If you can change stuff yourself then kewl, but I don't want the game making my character to look aged or have scars or flea bites or zits.

I never mentioned anything about aging :/ Just saying it would be neat if you're head hair and facial hair grows. being on an adventure and returning to civilization without stuble or longer hair just sounds weird:P

I know, it was just one example of a non-user-controlled system that made your character look terrible. :)

(never played beyond Fable 1, but I've also heard horror stories about the "change your body shape based on stats & eating" thing from the later games. :yuck: )

Edit: there was a barber in Fallout 3. (Well, and a much more hidden option for plastic surgery, but the barber was obvious.)

I don't see what the point is...you never see your character anyway. I remember spending a bunch of time making my first Oblivion character. Next plays I just did an automatic selection. If it was like Mass Effect chatting then I'd take my time to make a pretty character.

Don't change my hair, don't change my facial hair, let me change my face paint. I'm not expecting to have plastic surgeons so scars can be unchangeable.

If I pick a specific option, it's because I wanted that specific option, not because I wanted it to change over time.

Some of us play almost exclusively in third-person. <_<

and/or spend a good bit of time in rotating (or free) camera mode, to see how our character looks in certain armor or take screenshots. :)

(and, in Oblvion at least, you see your character when in the equipping menu)

Eh, not for me to discuss.

I really don't see why nor a need for hair and beards to change throught a game. The only way I could see it adding something is if it's woven into the game better than just character customization. If there are cultural references, ranks from scars, etc. Otherwise, it's just window dressing

I usually start out by creating myself within the game.I usually change my hairstyle drastically a few times a year. It would be nice if I could update my characters hair style after the character creation screen.

The same would go for facial hair.

It would be rather simple to have the game re-run the Facegen part of the Chargen process. The only issue is these menus can sometimes reset your character, so you lose spells and skills and perks. If they could make it safe, by eliminating the ability to get to the skill/attribute/perk screens then this is easilly doable in the game. At least it was under the Morrowind/Oblivion engines.

The only issue is to make it Lore Friendly.

Scars can only be aquired from character customization or are applied to bodyparts were severe damage has been inflicted to

This and it also should be Removable by going to Surgery or Something(Scars are cool for a badass character) and i would love a Barber shop to change hairstyle and Tattoo must be able to be Created in character creation and Edit/Add tattoo in Tattoo prior

This. Except that being able to visit the hairdresser to change my hairstyle, get my ears pierced, and to add/remove scars and tattoos would be more than fine. I'd love to be able to adjust my character's appearance as their circumstances change. It would be great to have them start out a little scruffy looking without committing to that look for the entire game. It would also be great to add a scar after a desperate battle.

One thing to note. Unless the Game Engine offers something new, body parts would be difficult to change throughout the game. Reason is the clothing usually replaces the body part when equiped. Also, every NPC in a Group or Class, tends to have the same body meshes, gender differences not withstanding.

The only thing that probably could be easilly changed during the game is Facial Features and Hair.

I would prefer if they call it woad/face paint/war paint instead of tattoos.

Otherwise tattoos sort of have to be permanent and you run the risk of contracting a disease when you get one.

[Also, I hated it in Fable where scars were permanent and cumulative so most players (even if they wore heavy armor) that spent alot of time in the game ended up looking like Danny Trejo]

Gawd I hope not...call me freaky, but I like the Character Creation process to have an end, and for that end to coincide with (or be very, very near to) the beginning of the game. And if you want to see Hulk-caliber nerd rage, let there be any lame-ass system that changes anything about my character's appearance without my permission.

I really hope there is gonna be some sort of Hairdresser in the game.
Since whenever i played Oblivion and got tired of my hairstyle or hair color and such and couldn't change it.
that was really the only thing negative about Oblivion for me.

People who voted for scars to appear as you're damaged must not have played the original Fable. Sure it SOUNDS like an interesting concept until your guy looks more mangled than Freddy Krueger with leprosy.
