application error

Post » Sun Jul 31, 2011 6:42 pm

My Oblivion keeps crashing to desktop. On the event viewer, it says:
Faulting application Oblivion.exe, version 1.2.0.416, time stamp 0x462392c7, faulting module Oblivion.exe, version 1.2.0.416, time stamp 0x462392c7, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x00089041, process id 0x1140, application start time 0x01cc4eed894c1166.

what can I do to resolve the issues?

Post a dxdiag.
XP: Go to Start->run, type “dxdiag” and hit enter. Click the Save All Information button near the bottom right. This will save a Dxdiag.txt in C:\ by default. Then open the dxdiag.txt and copy/paste the information into your post.

VISTA/Windows 7: Go to Start->Search, type “dxdiag” and hit enter, click the Save All Information button near the bottom right. This will save a Dxdiag.txt in C:\ by default. Then open the dxdiag.txt and copy/paste the information into your post.

That is hardly anything. The single most important component to any gaming system, and its drivers, is not included, nor is one of the most problematic of all possible components, nor the driver for it. You'll have to do loads better than that before anyone can even start out with any kind of answer, not even a WAG.

I suggest that you re-install Oblivion outside of the Program Files (x86) folder to let say C:\Game, because it's well known that Vista can cause a lot problems if you have installed Oblivion into any related Program Files folder.

I bought the game off steam, and installed it to games, not programs.

If Steam is installed to the Program Files directory it can cause the same symptoms.

Post a full dxdiag report as requested.

The display properties utility in Windows, on the "Settings" tab will tell you the graphics driver you are using, and the Device Manager will tell you the audio processor name and driver information. I shouldn't have to tell you how to find either one of those, just as I should have to tell you that your graphics card is very slow, being designed for business use, not games, so you will be out of luck with any game newer than Oblivion (and will only be able to run with low resolution and low quality settings, even in this old game), until you upgrade it.
