Arachnophobia - Spinnenphobie

Post » Tue Mar 29, 2011 11:37 pm

I have Arachnophobia, but I'm not scared of pictures of spiders, or spiders in video games.

Just real spiders, and even then it's more of a if I see a spider, I can't rest until I know for a fact it's dead. While I'm sorry that your fear of spiders won't allow you to enjoy Skyrim I don't believe spiders should be taken out just because of the fears of a small group of Arachnophobics.

Yup. Wouldn't be much of a game if they took out things according to every small group's irrational fear.

This. Sorry, but that's just the way it is. If it really bothers you so much that you can't play with them in, then you can always get the PC version and mod them out.

No kidding:

Are we going to go through this again? Okay...

While we're removing spiders so as not to upset all the arachnophobes, let's also:

Remove water so as not to disturb people with hydrophobia.
Remove mountains and cliffs, fear of heights is fairly common.
Remove all indoor spaces, can't upset the claustrophobics.
Remove all outdoor spaces, for folks with fear of those.

And then continue with the rabid Political Correctness until we've eliminated anything that could aggravate any possible phobia. http://www.phobialist.com/ Browse through that a bit, see what we'll have to get rid of, then tell me what we actually can put into the game.

Compassion is a really awesome thing in life.

Gizmo and Davor, thank you both for your tips to help my friend. I'm passing them along and I'm hoping something will work for her. She had to stop playing Oblivion because of the nausea and room spinning and she seems very interested in Skyrim but the motion sickness is too awful. Here's hoping these things work. Thank you both! :)

Yeah, motion sickness would tend to svck the fun out of playing any game. I'm not sure if this is related but I know some people get motion sickness in first-person games, if she hasn't it might be worth trying to play Oblivion in third-person even if the game doesn't play as well that way.

I believe it's the speed of the action going across the screen. It may be better for her in third but I don't remember her mentioning it. Yeah, it does svck. We used to talk about Oblivion with each other all the time when we were both playing it but then it got to her and she couldn't. :(

I want the spiders, but if you don't want them you could make/download a mod for it later.

Watched an episode of Monster Bug Wars on one of the discovery channels last night just just a bout 5 minutes before I first read this last night, sounds like something the OP might like lol.

I think if a giant Spider kills you it should instantly zoom out to 3rd person view if it is not already and the spider should spin you up in it's web like the one did Frodo on LOTR. Once you are spun up it should go to first person and zoom in real close as the saliva/venom dripping fangs slowly sinking into you as it bites and bites with blood spatter on the screen like when you chainsaw someone on gears of war. After it is done svcking out all of your blood and fluids you should be a dry husk void of all life. Or maybe instead all of it's hundreds of baby spiders can swam over you and devour you until nothing is left. Either way would be so great. Maybe someone could make a mod like that and disguise it calling it a "no spider mod".

So you're saying anything that isn't real isn't scary? There are plenty of scary things that aren't real, all horror movies are fiction so by default they aren't scary?

I love spiders and arachnids...In fact I own a Chilean rose-hair...Her name is Rosilind...She's quite tame and very beautiful and has never once struck out at me in an aggressive manner...I would much rather
have spiders than flies, mosquitoes, and ticks...Now those are dirty, terrible little creatures...

'I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when my fear is gone I will turn and face fear's path, and only I will remain.'

NO Never. I'm one of the biggest Arachnophobes I know, and yet I think its stupid to even think of removing the spiders. And I think you are being selfish.
I've said this once before, but you wouldn't remove the genitals from The Statue of David, would you? NO, because its offensive to the Artist and the Art.
So, by this I mean its Offensive to the Developers and the game if you removed them.

Edit: I just clicked some of those links and I think I might barf.

The Brazilian Wandering Spider is considered to be the deadliest spider in the world...The Sydney Funnel web is also pretty nasty as well...Hey! Check this out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WdVF9tU9Bbs

Of course people with a severe arachnophobia are still a small minority. I don't think there is any other phobia (that would matter for a CRPG) that is so common and has such a drastic effect on some people though.

If memory serves the most common phobia is public speaking and that is far more influential to your life than Arachnophobia
