I don't remember hearing anything about spiders at all, but I could be wrong.
I never really understood arachnophobia in relation to video games. There aren't a lot of phobias that also apply to video games and things like that. I'm afraid of heights, but I have no problem being really up high in a video game, even if I'm really immersed in it.
When it comes to phobias, there are people who clame to have a phobia who are simply creeped out by something, and those who are completely overwhelmed by it. I myself am afraid of spiders, just as I would be of the zombies and dragons if those existed in the real world, but I am not arachnophobic. I can get over that fear through rationalizing situations and accepting that it is only a video game. Spiders make me uneasy, but I can deal with them if I know they aren't real. A friend of mine, however, will be brought to tears at the very mention of a spider. It doesn't even need to be real, but just the idea of it can overwhelm her. That is a legitimate phobia, and probably one that would compel those with it to avoid spiders in the game at all costs. Even prevent game sales. That specific friend of mine trashed her copy of Ocarina of Time the moment a Skulltula dropped from the ceiling in the first dungeon
