Arachnophobia....

Post » Sun Nov 14, 2010 7:17 pm

I never really understood arachnophobia in relation to video games. There aren't a lot of phobias that also apply to video games and things like that. I'm afraid of heights, but I have no problem being really up high in a video game, even if I'm really immersed in it.

Probably because people don't like the LOOK of spiders. Whereas with the fear of height it's the feeling of falling and whatever. You realise it's just your character but you can SEE spiders but don't feel the falling of height.

Just my opinion.

Yikes I haven't seen that one before that was terrifying... but what about the little spiderlings in OB that nibbled on your toes with paralysis inducing venom?

Hmm...i must have blotted those out from my mind...i cant remember them....it must have been horrifing for me then if my brain made me forget...i beat the main quest as soon as possible and used my game guide to actively avoid deadra infested caves usually...but i dont remember running into spider deadra my last days of playing the game...especially little ones that ran at me.................i'd flip....

I don't remember hearing anything about spiders at all, but I could be wrong.

I never really understood arachnophobia in relation to video games. There aren't a lot of phobias that also apply to video games and things like that. I'm afraid of heights, but I have no problem being really up high in a video game, even if I'm really immersed in it.

When it comes to phobias, there are people who clame to have a phobia who are simply creeped out by something, and those who are completely overwhelmed by it. I myself am afraid of spiders, just as I would be of the zombies and dragons if those existed in the real world, but I am not arachnophobic. I can get over that fear through rationalizing situations and accepting that it is only a video game. Spiders make me uneasy, but I can deal with them if I know they aren't real. A friend of mine, however, will be brought to tears at the very mention of a spider. It doesn't even need to be real, but just the idea of it can overwhelm her. That is a legitimate phobia, and probably one that would compel those with it to avoid spiders in the game at all costs. Even prevent game sales. That specific friend of mine trashed her copy of Ocarina of Time the moment a Skulltula dropped from the ceiling in the first dungeon :P

I have a phobia of snakes, but video games where I fight snakes or literature with them doesn't bother me. The nightmares that follow, kinda do though.

I'd rather a big spider than a bunch of spiders a quarter of it's size(The one in the GI article spider pic). Not sure why, but a swarm of smaller creatures gives me more fear than one or two really big ones. I'm sure spiderlings will be in, and with Havok Behavior in place, it will seem pretty life-like and terrifying, even for me who really isn't fearful of spiders. I fear deep water and heights, but in a video game the underlying beauty of dark blue oceans and landscapes from atop the tallest mountain overcome this feeling and the experience is purely positive.

I believe the only other time I remember spiders was the spider Daedra in Oblivion. I hated fighting them because at the time it was kinda hard for me to kill them. I think I feared fighting Clannfears and Daedroths more in regards to irritating to encounter and fight.

I scream like a little girl when I see spiders in real life, and maybe get a little bit of creepy crawlies when I look at close up pictures of big ones, but in a video game? nah. That won't bother me at all. especially since it's gigantic and doesn't have the spindly little hairy legs. and the detail won't be the same.

This. Many people who say they have a phobia or some other mental restriction are simply over-exaggerating, at least until they get older. Many people don't understand what a phobia is. It is an uncontrollable fear of something. If someone says "I'm arachnophobic, but I can watch them on movies and stuff." Isn't really an arachnophobe. If you are truly phobic about something you will do all you can to escape from it. You will kick, bite, and punch anything and everything that gets in your way. You won't feel pain, you will only feel panic and uncontrollable dread.

This is where a rant begins so you might want to skip it.

Most teenagers will do things or say things to get attention. You know how many comments will say something like "I love to smoke to this." to a youtube video of the song "The Joker"? A lot. You know how many of them are teenagers that heard that song for the first time on That 70's Show when they are in the circle? Probably about half, likely more. They just want attention. A lot of advlts do drugs but they don't plaster that fact everywhere because A) that is a moronic thing to do and B) They don't do it because it is cool. They are either addicted to it or use it to escape life for a while, both of which are ill advised decisions.

I had a friend who constantly was in trouble. He got into fights, was in Sp. Education classes, and never tried. He was on Ritalin and said he had ADD. Yet he was always super hyperactive and violent, even on the meds. A side effect of Ritalin or other ADD meds is a kind of hyperactivity that usually makes you pay more attention to detail and be quiet. But if you don't have ADD it can simulate the effects. I told him to try going without the pills for a month. The first two weeks hurt like hell, but after they wore off and his body stopped depending on them he was downright normal. He wasn't as loud or violent, although he would still shout because he is very exuberant. We graduated together and now he is well on his way to become a Sergeant in the National Guard. The only reason he isn't one is because you need a certain amount of time served, he already has enough commendations in the 1.5 years he has been in to get it (Airborne, several jobs including MP and supply, Army Achievement Medal).

Most people at a young age craft a persona to use as a kind of guise. They usually craft it to have things in common with peers, like if a girl dresses a certain way or likes certain music, her friends may start to dress the same way or listen to similar music. People can claim that they have chronic arm pain until their brain actually believes it and they feel it. A friend of mine claims to have sleep issues when he really doesn't, just because my cousin has intermittent insomnia (He has to alternate between normal OTC sleeping pills and stronger things like codeine when his body starts to resist the effects), and they are good friends.

After a while (usually after high school graduation) the guises are cast aside or changed to be more accurate to a person's real self. Ending rant now. What was the topic about?

You should be a moderator as telling people that threads already exist and spouting off on the Bethesda way is all I have seen you do around here (although you are pretty right on about the Bethesda Way).

That may have seemed a cutting remark but it was a compliment.

I can see that. It must be challenging for mods to not rush into threads and be like "Lockpicking is fine how it is so **** off!" and stuff like that.

I'm not the biggest fan of spiders either, but seeing and killing the in-game never seemed be to be problematic. In fact I'm glad that they announced addition of our favorite arachnids, for they add wonderful sense of organic-ness to environment, and just seem a real and a natural thing to add there. And if it's gonna make world more real, and easier to immerse into: I'm all for it.
So... Aren't you just slightly exaggerating the issue here? I don't mean to be insensitive johnson here, but when buying games, do you really look at those with and without spiders? Ouch.

The spiderlings scared me and I'm not afraid of spiders byt I'm afraid of things who paralyze me so daedrots can jump on me afterwards, more so small fast enemies who is hard to hit.
Spider daedra was always primary target in the oblivion planes because of this.

I got that as well, in fact is the only phobia I suffer from. There are lots of times in games that contain spiders when I jump up thinking something is crawling on my leg, and I also get nightmares at night after playing such games. No pain no gain though! (but really, did it have to be spiders??)

1. Go to a psychologist.

2. Mod spiders out.

3. Learn to live with it.

Worst part was they could keep summoning them. Those little bast- bitc- you know what I mean. Always scurrying around stunning me and then I get shocked to death.

You know what would be even worse? Scrael. Scary little critters or whatever they are.
