First off: That -other- thread being mentioned... I'm pretty sure it was closed because THIS one was open. Just... y'know... sayin'.

Secondly! OP, mate... I totally get your fear. I'm horribly arachnophobic.

Mind you... I'm gonna -love- opening up a can of giant-spider whoopass on 'em... little bit of revenge for their control over my real life and all... but yeah. I get what you're saying. Don't mind those folks telling you what they think you should do. Ain't nobody who doesn't live a life of anxiety and fear over something stupid have the right to say they know better than someone who does.

It's real easy to tell someone to 'get over it', when you don't have to do it yourself, ain't it?

Yeah. That's what I thought.

Anyhow... I have a feeling that dungeon crawling is gonna be a lot more interesting in Skyrim. They've got a lot more dynamic light and -far- more visceral creatures to work with now. It's probably gonna make more than a few people [censored] themselves before the first week or two is up.

Nawwww, you poor thing...

:violin:

Man up a lil. It's just a videogame xD I'm arachnophobic too, and it will probably scare the crap outta me too but it's nothing to worry over. Plus, the game needs a few terrorfying moments.

That wasn't an essay, and dont worry it was entertaining. Yeah, I feel for you. I have social phobia and if your phobia is induced by virtual spiders that blows.

:D does that mean when you got to any of the dialogue in Oblivion you went "AHHHHHHH!" and skipped it all with your eyes shut?

JOKING! Geez. Settle down :)

Just a tip: see a psychologist.
Phobias can be difficult, and part of their job is to help you through them.
If you can't afford to see one... then I'm not sure.
Talk with friends, or try and check out Internet articles like these:

I'm surprised how many threads there are on arachnophobia.

Kinda wish I had that, it'd probably make fighting spiders pretty cool.

I...don't understand arachnophobia. Can someone care to explain why spiders are the bane of many people's existence?

I've a mild form, or had one any way.
I don't know about why most have it but...

I was 7 or 8, suffered a diabetic hypoglycemic attack my brain started to starve itself from lack of energy.
I then went through what can be described as an acid trip, while watching the film ghost.
Thousands apon thousands apon thousands of spiders swarmed out of the TV and started crawling towards me.
So that's why I spent over a decade terrified by them, and why I still dislike RL ones somewhat.

As to should they be removed no.
But the subject should be discussed as it goes into many topics about creatures, ratings, how scary a TeS game should be.. and I dare say a few others.

This. If your phobia is too bad for them, I'm sure they won't be involved in many quests so just avoid them or get someone else to play through those dungeons :P

Funny thing, I hate and absolutely despise spiders... but as long as theyre bigger than an inch, such as a tarantula, I'm ok with them... mostly cause smaller spiders are deadlier and are more common to have venom... what is a phobia of venom called anyway?

I'd consider myself arachnophobic, but animations of spiders don't bother me - only the real deal (although that counts photos and videos of them). I was wondering if it would help anyone if they watched a video which shows how spiders are made in animations and CGI? I bet there is something like that on YouTube, and maybe seeing how they are made would lessen the impact (disassociate them from actual spiders, so to speak). It might help, you never know.

A phobia is a fear of something irrational. Like Arachnophobia, Aquaphobia (fear of water,) Coulrophobia (Fear of Clowns.) Things we shouldn't fear but people do. We don't have phobia's for people wielding a weapon because that is a rational fear.
I'm sure I've read somewhere that Arachnophobia is the most common phobia. But to answer your question, there isn't an answer as to why people are scared of spiders. A certain amount of people just fear them, as I mentioned. A phobia is something that is irrational. As a pretty bad Arachnophobia myself, I know that spiders are hardly a threat to humans. I've held snakes plenty of times which I know possess far more dangers but I still always threated spiders as http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_LbccUVbSRd8/S8N_erx3cnI/AAAAAAAAGiQ/Z7oXqcT2PW4/s400/spider+2+haah.JPG

My aunt recently bought a Chilean Rose tarantula and a Cobalt Blue tarantula; I've spent time around them both and I have to say, I'm less afraid of spiders than what I was, of course my house has been spider-free so far since moving in but If I can stay in a room with two tarantulas. To the OP; If you're really that scared either wait for a mod so that they've been replaced, or, something that actually works for me when up against spiders. Play in third-person, I don't know why but I'm easier playing in third-person if I have to face a spider. Maybe that is why I stormed through Dragon Age. :P (o/t; A screenshot of DA-II has a spider that is twice the size of those in the first game and Skyrim!)

Edit:

There isn't, as vemon is often deadly it's rational to be afraid of it.

I believe people are overreacting a bit here. The effect spiders may have on people in the real world cannot be compared to spider models in a digital environment. Looking at the screenshot and to me the creature doesn't even resemble an actual spider.

Besides, there's also the part of believability. If the object of fear reaches unrealistic proportions, the brain comprehends this as impossible. This provides you with a barrier. So because these spiders in the game are not of a realistic size, the fear of them should be minimal. Add to that the fact that a phobia is usually instilled by the belief that the object can reach or otherwise harm the individual, which is not the case here, you should be perfectly fine.

A friend of mine has arachnophobia and was afraid she'd panic when watching Shelob in Lord of the Rings. Turns out she was fine because the spider was too big and unrealistic to incite any fear induced effects.

Confrontation therapy is also among the best courses of action to come to terms with your phobia. So actually facing your fears is the proper course if you ever wish to get rid of them.

Yes, I was also terrified of spiders in the past. But not anymore due to the fact that I have taken 5 bird spiders and 3 spiders of the Black Widow family as pets in the past. Being always in close proximity to them and observing them reduced my fear of spiders to a level where I can tolerate them.

Control your fear instead of it controlling you; is the best advice I can give you.

From Wikipedia: "...an irrational, intense and persistent fear of certain situations, activities, things, animals, or people". Emphasis on the word irrational.

Edit:

There isn't, as vemon is often deadly it's rational to be afraid of it.

You're explanation is not complete.

There is a well documented fear of death "thanataphobia", which is not at all irrational since all of us will eventually die. What makes it a phobia is that the REACTION is often irrational. So people with phobias are scared (sometimes to the point of paralysis) just from the thought or image of the object of their fear. It's not that the fear itself is irrational. Anyone could have fear of a spider or water or clowns or death in certain situations. What is irrational is that the phobia begins to consume the victim's thoughts and could impact daily life. It becomes problematic for people when they can't perform or engage in common activities (such as playing video games) because they are so consumed by their phobia.

A common way to deal with phobias (like you pointed out) is to confront the fear by taking baby steps and getting closer and closer to the object of terror. So maybe Skyrim will be a good way for arachnophobes on here to confront their fears! Embrace the terror!

Im totally not condemning bethesda for putting spiders in there and im also sure they were planning on ppl to play this who were afraid of spiders..if i remember correctly they didnt really have anything scary in oblivion besides stuff i was afraid wen i was 7..like ghosts and skeletons oooooo!!! I think the scariest thing was zombies at first...but anyways im actually glad they decided to implement spiders...its time they had something scary in there...i just wish it hadnt been my phobia first lol...wat about the ppl who are afraid of clowns...I CAN FIGHT THOSE NO PROBLEM lol :)

There were spider Daedra in Oblivion. First time is saw one I was kinda freaked out. I have a minor phobia of BIG spiders. But i like being scared so Im all for huge scary spiders.

Then I suppose I am somewhat happy that being scarred as a child and being terrified of insects and reptiles that are possibly poisenous is perfectly rational ._.

Just wanted to emphasize this. Best way is to deal with big spiders like tarantulas and then move to smaller ones. Even just naming your fear helps make it not as powerful.

I'm looking forward to embracing and conquering thanataphobia. Hand me my shotgun please, time to break on through to the other side for a bit. Have the paddles and a couple units AB+ on hand please. And I must say I disagree with your statement. Thanataphobia is a good example on how phobias are irrational fears not irrational reactions. People can fear death to the extreme but the fact that everyone will die makes it even more irrational because they fear something they know will not and cannot change. The reaction to a fear relies on how strong the fear itself is. I don't like those shock videos where the ghost or whatever jumps out at you and screams out of nowhere. I jump, and I may be shaken by it for a while but anyone with a Phasmaphobia (fear of ghosts) will be out the door in a half a second because they react to an irrational level of fear.

I wouldn't say that I'm afraid of spiders, but they do creep me out. Real ones, pictures, ones in games, CGI ones in movies, I have a hard time looking at them. I don't understand why, though. I'm cool with crabs and lobsters, which are kind of large and have a bunch of legs. But a spider.... just something about them is unsettling to me. I'm also not too fond of scorpions, especially the first big one that I saw in FO3 that took off like a shot right at me. In it's defense, I did throw a stick of dynamite at it, so I could understand it's anger. Still, it creeped me out, and I did my best to avoid them the rest of the game. The giant ants... no problems there. Strange how some critters instill uneasiness, while others don't, even with similar characteristics.

By the way you will never want to be a guest in my house. My husband and I love spiders and we let them crawl around to eat the bad bugs that really cause problems =3

Not the cat though. He likes to talk at them and then eat them CHOMP
