Arachnophobia....

Post » Sun Nov 14, 2010 12:03 am

I've been prowling over all the info on skyrim and its made me incredibly excited for the game...one thing however, that has not made me excited, is the revealing of spiders in skyrim..and not just boot stompers but full on lord of the rings humongous spiders..i have arachnophobia and they've implemented dynamic behavior too..i dont remember where i read it but they will sometimes hide on the ceiling and drop down on u without warning...great...now i wont do sidequests.."scenario" little girl says:" help! My daddy got dragged into the spider cave!" i lean down and comfort her as i say softly:" sorry little girl..ur gonna hafta finda new daddy cuz i [censored] HATE SPIDERS ahhhhhhhhh!" then i grab the girl and throw her into the cave too and run off. I know prolly most of u know of the
spiders but i just wanted to know ur thoughts...sry bout the essay i pretty much wrote..

Edit: for those that will just read this and nothing else then accuse me of wanting bethesda
to get rid of spiders: i have stated later on in the thread that im glad they put the spiders in and that i dont want them removed...im simply stating how this is a challenge that is set in the game for ME PERSONALLY...
SPIDER PIC!! For those without gameinformer subscriptions :

Dude, spiders freak the crap out of me too. Especially the big ones. I dunno, I'm just gonna have to avoid them as best I can in Skyrim. Hell, maybe it'll be fun to burn the crap out of 'em.

I don't remember hearing anything about spiders at all, but I could be wrong.

I never really understood arachnophobia in relation to video games. There aren't a lot of phobias that also apply to video games and things like that. I'm afraid of heights, but I have no problem being really up high in a video game, even if I'm really immersed in it.

That wasn't an essay, and dont worry it was entertaining. Yeah, I feel for you. I have social phobia and if your phobia is induced by virtual spiders that blows.

I'm quite happy about spiders...... i would be glad if they remade the lord of the rings cave..... imagine like running from a huge spider and getting caught in webs while knowing that the poison would permanently kill you until it is healed....

Edit your post and remove the workaround for the f bomb or you will probably get this locked and a warning on your account. You can say **** (shift-8 four times) or [censored] (actually type it and let it get censored by the boards) but if you try and work around it like that you will get in trouble.

That being said There was already a thread like this and it basically summed up to "Either don't play it or get it on PC and make/wait for a mod to come out that removes them. Sorry, but that's life for you. I kinda understand how you feel though. I can do almost any game nowadays but I can't do some parts of Ocarina of Time (namely Gohma and part of the Forest Temple) because it reminds me of trying to do them and being scared [censored]less by Gohma and the Wallmasters.

I'm not a psychologist but wouldn't this game help you over-come your fears!?

Imagine destroying 100's upon 100's of spiders, slowly getting less and less scared of them!

Maybe your love of Skyrim wll help you overcome your arachnophobia.
I have a huge problem with underwater scenes in video games, to the point I have to have somebody with me talking, or play the level for me.

No problem, it's quite common with boards owned by public entertainment companies. Gamefaqs, advlt Swim, etc. And booheads is right, they are currently exploring using virtual reality (which games are a very minor form of) to help soldiers and sixual assault victims cope with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. It can be very theraqeutic, as long as it doesn't kill you I suppose. That would be the main difference, in the VR you relive the experiences and they slowly change it to where you win or you escape or whatever. Fascinating stuff.

I hate spiders, I wouldn't say I have full on arachnophobia, but I really hate them and am freaked out by them. But my fear of them makes me like the fact that they are in Skyrim. I want skyrim to captivate and horrify me at the same time and giant spider sneak attacks will definitely do that

I thought we already settled this discussion. I am going to create a mod that removes the spiders...and replaces them with Clowns. http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_XU9x8G7khv0/S8XzcIyltXI/AAAAAAAAOPU/Rga6a9MgG1w/s400/Scary_Clown.jpg

I think they will be a lively edition.... if they live up to the fear. Spiders as monsters are not just lumbering large beasts, but rather secret, merciless, and voracious speed demons.

This might not feasible, but the only way a spider would scare me in games is if it was watching me when I wasn't watching it and, at some point in my carelessness, pounces on me via trapdoor spider style and attempts to grapple me into its dank dark lair.

It would be most disappointing if I just end up trading blows with a giant spider in an even match of back and forth strikes, like most elder scroll games up to this point.
