do archer based characters need stamina?

My main form of attack is gonna be archery and illusion; do i need points in stamina? Because if i recall correctly having an arrow nocked doesnt drain stamina does it? Only zooming in does.

Correct.

Personally I find topping it up every 5-6 levels to have helped with the zoom in length, which frees up my gear stats, and as an archer myself it's also handy to have a little there for close encounters.

i only use stamina for zooming and sprinting, sprinting you'll be doing a lot of facing dragons and for the first bit of the game (til you get some fully powered shouts) giants and mammoths

but then of course more stamina = more room for loot :)

(every point you put in stamina = 5 points of extra bag space)

I believe you are absolutely correct. Stamina is not drained if you do not take the zoom perk...but I like that little zoom.
However, if you want to carry more as you level, you'll need stamina to raise how much you can carry.
A 2:1 Health/Stamina ratio is pretty good, but I like a little more because my character also likes to use one handed blades and maces, and I want to be able to carry more as I level.

[edit] Not 2:1..that might not be good...3:2 or 5:4? I dunno...I like more stamina...you mileage may vary...If you were going to play a strict archer (who can't carry a lot) you might be able to make it better with a lot of health and less stamina like 2:1...if you don't zoom.

at 64, I've got 200 magicka 300 health & 400 stamina (or very close to those numbers). With the extra pockets perk, i'm at 500 or so for carrying capacity, which is plenty. I do play a ranger/assassin type with archery/sneak though. Being able to use that time-slow/zoom feature = amazing. I can literally clear a room of 5 NPCs sitting in chairs, with a bow, before any of them even stand up. Since I'm more stealthy, I only need enough health to prevent being one-shot from a dragon breath attack because honestly: you have potions for a reason. Drink them. Get cover. Shoot. Rinse/repeat.

Point being: health is there for when you get hit. If you're a ranged character, you only need so many.

Spoiler

The wolf queen quest chain ends with you entering a room in which about a dozen draugr(sp?) burst out and attack you. All I did was stand in the doorway and shoot arrows. Not a single one touched me. Not one.

I play a pure Archer and spent alot of points into stamina as i went into the Block tree for Disarming Bash and Power Bash which work great with a bow.

Also if your wearing light armour the Steed Stone will help with stamina and the carry space
