Archery and magic

Magic or the bow? I really wanted to play both, but aside from the conjuration tree, I don't see much use for magic as an archer. What kind of spells work well for an archer who primarily engages enemies from the shadows?

Edit: I got to thinking about rune traps. I could set them up and fire a shot at a wall to lure enemies or set them up as added security incase the first shot doesn't take them down. That would require silent casting and destruction.

Illusion could be useful. You can calm enemies or make them fight each other. With conjuration you can use the bound bow- daedric quality, no carryweight, no running out of arrows.

would be nice if we could combine destruction and archery. Unfortunally I think you're limited to conjuration and illusion

Try a playthrough as an http://theskyrimblog.ning.com/group/character-building/forum/topics/character-build-the-arcane-archer?xg_source=activity, I found it a thoroughly entertaining experience.

I play a mystic archer. For me, the key to blending bow and magic is to eschew melee completely - use magic to both complement the bow and compensate for no melee ability. The only weapon Buffy touches is a bound bow. She augments the conjured bow with summoned helpers, mind control spells, quiet casting, stealth, detect life/dead, rune 'traps'. She does very well, as long as you don't mind playing kind of a slow, methodical style rather than charging in.

I would prefer an archer as I'm a person more firmly planted in the physical. But if you wanted to combine magic and archery the best thing I can tell you to do is invest points in Conjuration, Illusion, and Enchanting. All of these will help you in some way while still allowing you to use your bow. You can summon allies to help you, muffle foot steps, cast runes, and enchant your bow for more damage output. But in all honesty there are very few things you can do to combine magic and archery in Skyrim at least.

Well, that's sort of what I'm looking for; a character that focuses on strategy to win battles. I figured the runes would be very useful.

Sneak will also help, especially if you use a bound bow. The sneak tree has a perk called deadly aim, that adds 3x the damage using a bow while sneaking. It would fit in with the mystic archer, or arcane archer. Plus you can use potions such as poisons and frenzy potions and such on your bound bow.
