Is Archery Combat Broken?

Post » Wed Sep 28, 2011 3:24 am

Its an RPG not a FPS damage against specific locations dont work as they normally should, just look at Fallout, I hit an enemy in the head with a 7.62mm Rifle round and it takes 2 - 3 hits before the target goes down. Normal FPS one shot to the head, their dead.

Grant it a system like the Fallout Games where you can cripple your target would be a bit nicer but from what it looks like, its a universal damage indication system like most of the Elder Scrolls Series, whether you hit them in the head, leg, arm, chest it does the same kind of damage.

This.

Agreed.
To the people above: In a sense it kinda is an FPRPG since it's usually played in first person, and it's also an RPG, soooooo..... yeah. :spotted owl:
It's not an FPSRPG, I left the 'S' out, cause it's not a shooter unless it's a bow or something.

Yes first person is different than a first person shooter.

Oh my Deadra who even cares where the arrow sticks in the sprite.
For sake, why is it that peeople care so much about how things look but never what it does?
I wouldnt even care if there was never an arrow found on any body, and Daggerfall even had that.
As long as I knew that my 15% armour ignore ability or whatever was functioning.

I do not really understand why either, the function of things in any game is more important than graphics.

:spotted owl: Hoot

The Owl agrees

This owl thanks you.
I dont want it to be COD but if by COD you mean enemies react realisticly to having a 2 foot wooden shaft shoved through thier left eye then... yeah I gusse I would prefer COD over a very stupid looking guy with an arrow through his temple still chasing/fleeing from me...

Ok you want to see them fall with an arrow threw the eye great but comparing an RPG to a FPS is like comparing the Mona Lisa to a drawing a two year old makes. The arrow threw the eye would be a good cosmetic thing and if they had locational damage great. As the current system is however, I think it will be a lot better playing an archer this time around because of the resistance on the bow and the extra damage.

I think I can see where you're coming from. Ideally the archery mechanic should be like the anti-materiel rifle in Fallout. I just accidentally finished the final confrontation in 'Lonesome Road' by entering the launch area, zooming around to see if anything scary was about, noticed what looked like a person in front of the launch pad, took about half-a-minute to line up a shot just in case, then Bang head-shot sneak critical exit Ulysses. I was delighted to find that when advancing further - thereby activating the other belated sub-baddies - that, yes, there was his body... with the head missing... right where I guess I'd shot him. All in all, the effort seemed well rewarded - like something had been genuinely effected in the physics/mechanics, not as if a canned outcome (with you on the pin-cushion fall-down thing) had been unlocked.
Oh well, hopefully us cowardly ranger types won't be too dissapointed when Skyrim releases.

Lets also remember though that on Sammu's playthrough it took an arrow in the chest, an arrow in the skull and an arrow in the ass to kill an old woman... And that was on novice setting.

Ok three arrows at least its not three hundred like in Oblivion. Oblivion I feel had just about the worst archery system I've ever seen.

TES isnt a FPS? It's played primarily from the 1st person view and you shoot magic and arrows.... kinda gona have to disagree with you, yes it is VERY much and RPG but it is still a FPS, I dont know why it cant be both, FO3 was a RPG and a FPS and it was awesome!

First-person shooter (FPS) is a video game genre that centers the gameplay on gun and projectile weapon-based combat through first-person perspective

Happen to notice the word "centers" in there? Not a single TES game uses gun/projectile weapons as the focus point in the game. Not to mention, there isn't a single FPS game made that has an optional 3rd person view mode. Just because a game has a characteristic or two of another genre, does NOT make it that genre as well.

Not Broken at all because an Archer is still useless if he's getting hit with a Sword and the Bow takes longer to fire, thus it will be harder to do rapid fire.

Agian why is it such a chore to ask for both, why cant a game function like it should and not have insane visual eyesores? you act like I'm asking you people to choose between a great LOOKING game and a great ACTING game.

Both, yes, if possible.

Final fantasy 13, that I recently purchased, has amazing graphics.
Not once does anything clip through anything.
But its a tube. The entire game is one big tube.

If possible, yes, please.
When it comes to feasable however I take functioning mechanics in a freeform sandbox over no clipping issues anyday.

Theres no reason for people to get upset agian, I never siad
"This is a FPS and stats should be secondary!"
I never siad
"Achery is broken, dont buy this game!"
All I siad is that as it stands it's a busted system and should be adressed in the future

please stop putting words in my mouth, I never ever siad I wanted this to be a FPS. I am glad for what little improvment they made but that doesnt mean we cant expect more

Ok but at least in fallout 3 hitting an enemy in the head did MORE damage than say the foot. I like this balance. There needs to be some form of locational damage in my opinion. And to all you nay-sayers, how realistic/imersive is it to not have some form of locational damage.

If i cant remember correctly, bethesda said that the game wont have location damage, which is kinda of a bummer coming out of fallout 3 and new vegas.

Its nothing that big though, sure it doesn't make sense.. but sometimes one has to open their eyes and realize its a game and not real life. :violin:

i can understand why people feel like this is an issue; the quake era and beyond have conditioned us to believe that all ranged combat must include some form of BOOM!HEADSHOT!

but when you stop to think about it, it makes perfect sense for TES. your prowess in combat isnt supposed to be based on how twitchy your finger is or your physical aiming ability, but the culmination of your skills, planning, and adaptive tactics (even if practically its never been much more than hack-slash). locational damage would only possibly work for archery, and even then it would require some sort of VATS-like system to be of any practical use; TES isnt a fine-tuned shooter and the FPSing is only so accurate on its own; FO3 was frustrating enough without using VATS, and it had a much greater ranged combat focus; expecting such twitchy skills in what is primarily an RPG is just...wrong. if they just added headshot damage bonuses, all that would change is you having to constantly aim for the head and nowhere else.

besides, do you REALLY want to forsake all those amusing "death by arrow-in-buttocks" moments?

the system they have will have to work for now

ideally i would love a locational damage system of sorts. the only problem with that is damage mutipliers based on skill and stealth are almost thrown out the window. BUT if the system is used to ID if the arrow hits in body/arms/legs at x amount of force to = effect.

for instance if arrow strikes arms at a high force the arm could become crippled and inaffective for x amount of time. if its the legs then the character would become crippled in that leg make them limp and drastically reducing their speed for x amount of time.

if the body hits the body then its a normal damage. if its the head its double damage including stealth multipliers.

i think this would be the closest balanced system that would include locational damage and still incorporate a skill system. if using a perk system then perks could be added to increase chance and duration of effects.

Since you haven't played it I don't think you could say it's broken.

And I don't know what you are talking about, you shoot a guy and he ain't dead, shoot him again.

Like what's the deal?

I just want to say that Boromir took about seven arrows from the Uruk' Hai (sp?) with the bow.

I don't know where I'm going with this, but it made sense at the time.......

I don't see why people surviving after having an arrow in their eye socket is such a stretch.

I'd like you to tell http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1093823/Pictured-Schoolboy-archer-survives-friend-shoots-arrow-eye.html parents that.

This look like you called The Elder Scrolls a FPS...

We do not know if the archery is broken in Skyrim because we never played the game...

It actually doesn't have the same flaws
1. stamina is drained when you draw your bow (you could hold it forever in oblivion)
2. the bow is stronger so you have a greater chance of one hit kills
3. the animation looks a lot better
4. you can shoot arrows to distract enemies (in oblivion you could shoot all around them and they wouldn't notice a thing)
And the person playing was level one. I hope im not getting one hit kills at level one

Combat also suffers from no locational damage so its not like they were just like [censored] archery

I wish people would stop complaining about everything in the game
