Archery Leveling Problem?

Post » Sat Sep 10, 2011 10:48 am

Been on the forums for a while and had a question that I had in mind.

Considering that the leveling process for Skyrim will be similar to OB, and due to the fact that arrows will be used as more of a sneak attack/insta kill mechanic with fewer of them being available, doesn't that mean that leveling archery will be 10x+ harder and longer to level than something such as blade or destruction since those are mechanics intended to be used in pure constant combat?

Thanks~

They will just scale it up so you get more xp per hit. Pretty simple.

Maybe the Archery skill increases faster than it did in Oblivion.

The devs play-test the game. I'm sure they have balanced all the skills well.

If they want it to level at the same pace as Oblivion, they have to adjust the XP per hit to match the damage. E.g. if a shot before did 10 damage and 10 xp points (so to speak), this time if it does 100 damage it gives 100 xp points. And then arrows are restricted proportionally. Another thing that's impossible to judge at this time.

You say that but the process was pretty much the same in OB. Hopefully they have learnt from their mistakes though...

I agree with Amiki

It would seem silly for them to make archery stronger but leave it unbalanced in leveling. Personally, I have faith that Bethesda would think of this and increase the experience you get depending on the range of your shot and whether or not it hits.

What's with the sudden worry over archery? I don't get it. If you play right, the skill is going to kick [censored],it's that simple.

Did you think the devs would have balanced in well in Oblivion? It wasn't a game breaking thing, but I didn't find it to be particularly balanced. I'm pretty sure the devs aren't going to get EVERYTHING "right" in Skyrim.

But whatever, all this pre-release stuff is just speculation, right?

Because multiple previews and sources claim the rarity of arrows.

No arrows = no archery leveling.

Level scaling the skill for more xp per hit would make very good sense, however, at the same time one could easily abuse it and then end up getting 10x faster leveling for those using pure archery or trying to power level the skill.

That doesn't make sense.

If they up the XP per use of the archery skill because arrows are rare. And the rarity of arrows will prevent the powerleveling you are worried about.

Does anyone know if archery is getting its own perk tree? If so, perhaps they'll have a perk that increases the possible amount of arrows in the world.

I figured, but couldn't remember if it was included in the two-handed skill or not. Pardon me, folks!

Arrows might be in short supply, but not as bad as you'd think ,i'll bet....then you'll have trainers..well...to train you. I just can't see a problem at all. And even if it does become a problem ( which it won't ) ,that's why you have other skills. Bethesda isn't going to gimp a popular build. Archery is alot more powerful now,and even more so as you get the perks. I prefer the new way.
They also said they'll be more expensive, which means they'll be in shops or on merchants. I am not concerned in the slightest.

I think that the whole "arrows being rare" statement has been slightly misunderstood. They are probably rare outside of cities/settlements, but are plentiful in shops.

Previewers have stated that arrows were rare, but did any of them simply go to a town and try to buy some? I didn't think they were that common in the wilds of Oblivion either, but you could buy them 100-200 at a time if you just visited a city. And besides that, with increased damage, we shouldn't need the 300 arrows we needed in Oblivion anyway, right?

I don't see the problem in arrows being rare or not. With blacksmithing you can just make all the arrows your heart desires and even reinforce the bow you like using as long as you have the resources from mining.

Did you ever try leveling up restoration in oblivion?

that was difficult compared to any other school for reasons I never figured out.

It took something like 10x as many uses as Conjuration, IIRC to level. You can check it all out at the UESP. And I really doubt that the dev's came to that decision lightly. It might have been overpowered otherwise.
