Archive invalidation crash

Post » Sat Oct 30, 2010 1:06 pm

Decided to start a new thread because this is a different problem than the original (and people stopped replying). The problem I'm having only happens when archive invalidation is activated (that's kind of important)

I am running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit, I've ran a DxDiag and it found no errors. I can play Oblivion with archive invalidation (thus causing me more confusion). My game is installed under c:\Games. I've enabled multi core in my ini. I've reinstalled Fallout 3 about 4 times trying to get this to work. I use FOMM's archive invalidation (but I've tried using my ini and the separate program). I've bossed my load order. I can't think of what else to try...Note, I have patch 1.7 installed. I've also tried launching fallout with no mods or DLC and I get the same crash. I have an ASUS G73, so being able to run Fallout 3 shouldn't be a problem.I've tried runngin as an admin (which I always do anyway) and without UAC.

Any help is appreciated in helping me resolve this.

Thanks

From http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=944 Nexus page:

ArchiveInvalidation Invalidated! will set bInvalidateOlderFiles to 1, on some computers setting bInvalidateOlderFiles to 1 in Fallout 3's ini will cause the game to crash on startup, at the moment it is unknown why this happens and there is no solution yet, unfortunatly you'll have to do without ANY modified original content since bInvalidateOlderFiles needs to be set to 1 to use any.

The people I've seen with this problem in the past have only been able to solve it by buying and installing a new copy of Fallout 3.

I have GOTY and I got the same problem. However, I do have another copy (not GOTY) at home, so I might try that one in a few weeks and keep you updated! Meanwhile, if you can fix this, please let me know!

@ OP: do you have GFWL installed? I don't think the game will run without it. That doesn't mean you have to use it, just have it installed.

The game does run perfectly fine without ArchInv. So it is NOT a GFWL issue.

If you would have read my post, you would have clearly seen I was speaking to OP who said that it crashes without any mods installed.

I had a similar problem. I rooted it down to either the game copy, or DarnUI not being installed properly. If your running darn, check that. Otherwise you may try a reinstall. Most likely you'll need a new game though.

Thanks for the advice everyone. Yes, I have GFWL (ugh) and I had Darn installed via FOMM so it is now completely gone. It is an archive invalidation error...ugh

As far as I know, there's no known solution to this issue.

I hear about one additional solution, but can not check it myself.
There is two different archiveinvalidators, one included into FOMM, another- standalone, can be founded on Nexus.
Try both of them, may be you will be lucky

Here is an interesting piece of information - maybe it will help somebody more competent than me in solving this:

After having the same problem as described above I got my second original(!) copy of Fallout and installed it. It did not solve the problem (yet...).

I right now only have the unpatched vanilla version (1.0.0.12?) and the ArchiveInIn program version activated. Then it does start provided I run it via the launcher.

The same works with FOMM 12.2. (till now...). With FOMM 11.9 it will crash on start up (provided my) ArchiveInIn is activated via the above program (or any other means).

Weird? I surely think so.
