Are any fully automatic weapons worth using?

Post » Tue Jan 06, 2009 6:40 pm

In NV, it seems to me that the base damage of automatics is so low that most of the damage will be absorbed by DT? The only automatic with a decent damage per bullet is the 12.7 mm SMG. Am i missing something or are automatics just crap? Does a weapon like the assault carbine have any use? I suppose the LMG with armour piercing ammo could be quite good, but 5.56 mm armour piercing is rare.

Thoughts?

They're good against unarmoured opponents, and AP rounds are effective against armoured ones.

All in all, I find the auto weapons to be great fun for run and gun. Now this post is done. :D

Automatics rock versus no/low armor, or with high powered/armor piercing rounds, against anything.

that creature has 30 DT and over 800 HP. Avenger does 14 dmg/shot and even with 15 armour piercing cannot breach that DT... so you end up doing the default which is what, 20% damage /shot? which would equal to 2.8 dmg/shot and the magazine on the avenger is 120 bullets... 336 damage in one magazine. you would need 3 magazines to down that one... on normal difficulty. Seems to me that weapon is not at all suited to down that creature.

I actually have a mod that removes that 20% bleed trough. No clue what is going on, but it went down before it could reach attacking distance. It was a while ago so i may have forgotten some details, but i was left unimpressed and undamaged.

Deathclaws, at least normal ones, having a DT of 30 was a bug. They're only supposed to have 15. The effect that increased their DT was being applied twice.

(Also don't forget that shots to the head do double damage, and deathclaws have really big heads)

If you can afford to buy a good amount of AP rounds, automatic guns are great. I love the Assault Carbine, it's a tiny bit less powerful than the Minigun, but is much easier to use and is light.

Yes the assault carabine is a great weapon, against cazadores and not using V.A.T.s it is the best I've found at any range.
It has cheap plentifull ammo, and its bulk type adds more damage.
The draw backs are its condition without constant repairs and or Raul's perk you wont be using it for long.

12.7, you can't hit the buldging butt of a battleship sinking kraken with this outside of V.A.T.s at almost any range.
1 or 2 rounds in 12 of a base cost of 4 caps ammo is a waste, no matter high strong the round.
Inside of V.A.T.s it's glithed to give an automatic full burst hit to any non human target, at maxium range powrfull but boring.

10mm up close this gun is the best against hordes of little DT creatures, and has no weakness'.

9mm almost the same as the 10mm, slightly less ammo later on, higher RoF, and the rarity of the weapon itself past Novac make it a back more than a reliable go to gun imo.

Laser RCW, perfect weapon.

Minigun, I have no experience with this in NV so I can't say.

Light machine gun, the gun version of the laser rcw.

The legendary one has 30. Does the double damage to head get applied before or after DT?

After, I believe.

For some serious auto-weapon carnage, go EW and use either the Laser RCW or Gatling Laser with MC rounds. Pretty much anything will die in a few seconds. Sure, it'll be a bit expensive to keep in ammo and possibly spares, however the kill rate is just insane.

It should be after, all bonus to damage is applied after the DT takes into account base weapon effects.
After penalties to DP itself due to certain ammo types boosting DT, or I could be wrong.

I don't think they're worth using. I'd just stick with the Marksman Carbine as it shoots at the perfect speed.

But a Marksman Carbine doesn't look nearly as intimidating as a Minigun! :D

Ive found the automatic weapons in NV are not nearly as effective as the slow firing, high powered weapons like the ranger sequoia, brush gun, trail carbine, etc.

I do want to try a build using a full auto weapon though, just cant seem to decide on one.

For myself, I think they're worth using....in certain situations. They're not generally the gun you want to actually have equipped 90% of the time, if only because they eat up ammo like dogs eat kibble. I like the 12.7 one for non-vats, very close quarters fights where you're being a bit swarmed...the panic gun, if you will. But the 10mm one isn't bad either. It's a certain playstyle, and it can be fun, imo, especially if you like real-time combat, if you take their strengths & limitations into consideration.

Mostly tho, I don't use them often. I like the pistols and rifles far too much.

I personally prefer mostly semi auto or bolt action, It seems more cost effective.

But there's lots of great auto weapons.

I had no problem with ammo with my tank character, who used SMGs as soon as they came available (and am currently replaying). Final equipemnt was LMG and Avenger as the main weapons, though i had a Bumper Sword for enemies that didn't justfiy the use of ammo. And of course Mercy and Annabelle for those enemies that don't really give a [censored] if i empty a minigun clip on them :bolt:

Mostly tho, I don't use them often. I like the pistols and rifles far too much.

I agree with that, my favorite character uses them exclusively.

Argee, they are mostly panic weapons for you to put down enemy comes to close. But in general, unless you are passionate about them, there isn't but reason to use them.

And yes, Laser RCW is awesome, especially with new OC and Laser Commander.
