Are we asking for too much realism?

Realism up until the point where it becomes annoying

I was skeptical about New Vegas's hardcoe mode but after playing it I loved it. It wasn't intrusive, didn't slow gameplay down too much and didn't force me to go massively out of my way just to survive

I think they could get away with a bit more whilst keeping it fun and not frustrating

Way too much. Instead of the thousandth realism request, we should worry about features that were in previous games that have gotten the ax for no apparent reason.

If it's the hardcoe mode similar to Fallout: NV, then it wouldn't be out of the question to ask for this. People ask for realism where realism would apply in everyday life in Skyrim. There is barely anything about TES that is realistic in an overall perspective, so there's really no need to worry.

Reality is a falsehood. There is no such thing. Our reality is a perception of greater forces impressed upon us for their amusemant. Some say that these forces are the gods, other that they are something beyond the gods.

I fully support a realism sub-menu with check boxes. This would allow people who don't want to eat/drink/use the restroom (Not animated of course!)/sleep to not use those features.

I don't like the idea of a corny "hardcoe" mode that has all of those features on. I do like the idea of a sub-menu for those things.

When it comes to gore I totally relate to the topic though. Violence in real life is disgusting and horrifying. I don't want that in a game. I want fantasy fun.

A topic that was recently locked was trying to state this point, however was severely misinterpreted, and I felt it deserved a real discussion.

I've seen a lot of posts recently asking for realism togglers, being forced to sleep, or various things about the world to make it more realistic. I think we have to remember two things.

1) It's set in a fantasy realm, an unrealistic world is perfectly okay.

2) Too much realism in a game, and it stops being a game. We play games because they are unrealistic, if they were like reality, why would we play them?

What do you guys think? For or against realism? Or are you in the middle?

The first one is absurd. No matter how fantastical a world is, people eat and sleep. Creating worlds where people dont sit down, or have their eyes in their ears, is not what fantasy is all about. Fantasy is a narrative, not a visual thing.

Its not realism I am looking for. I just want what makes logical sense and what could be feasible if nirn were a real world. Like no duel wielding claymores. If I wanted hyper realism, like falling in a pit trap and breaking both your legs, thus getting stuck there for days, feasting on worms and drinking muddy puddles of water when it rains, only to get finished off when the bandits come back, or a hungry predator finds me, then there is a wonderful game called "Real Life." It has the best resolution graphics, amazing pvp action, and you really can be anything in that game if you put forth the effort.

I have an idea: NPCs shouldn't eat, drink, or sleep either. I mean this is clearly a fantasy world that doesn't have the constraints of reality, where at least one character has no need for food, so why does anyone else?

The people who want basic needs requirements want it to be optional. As in, everyone who doesn't like it can turn it off, or it can be off by default and those who like the additional survival elements can turn it on. The thing is it's much easier for the devs to put in a standardized food requirement/reward system than it is for modders to do. There are mods for Oblivion that add food requirements, but they cannot work with other mods that add new food and drink unless they are made specifically to work together. It is also easier for the devs to do things like make the npc eating animations work with the player.

Personally, I like the idea of rewarding the character for eating rather than punishing them for not eating, while I think not sleeping for weeks should cause your character to have very slow stamina regeneration or a temporarily lowered stamina cap. It would also be nice if you could sit down and eat with someone while talking to them, rather than interrupt their dinner.

Nobody wants to ruin your game by making you have to eat. If it would be in, it would be completely optional.
