Are bosmer going to be a little less... annoying?

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 10:05 am

I'm almost always a stealth/archer/stabby character. And I usually play elves (I blame Legolas).

In oblivion, my first character was a Wood Elf, because Altmer weren't that great for the type of character I wanted.

But I noticed something. Bosmer are annoying as hell. Even in MW, they weren't the most likable.

Glathir, Adoring Fan, Thoronir, etc.

They were just... annoying.

Maybe get a better voice actor, make them have sharper features, and have them lose a little weight.

Just make them more elf like, not like midgets wearing those plastic elf ears you buy for christmas.

So, I'll probably make my Theif character a dunmer, if the Bosmer aren't a little less annoying.

From screens, it seems Bosmer have returned to their dignified (as dignified as lean, cannibalistic tree people can be) position they had before Morrowind. Let's hope their personalities have returned to it's original place as well.

I guess if they weren't in the game, they could be less annoying.

Personally, i think you just proved the topic starter's point...

I certainly agree that Bosmer have become rather hard to take seriously now, something which hasn't been helped by several rather unpopular characters being Bosmer. Can Skyrim restore some dignity to Bosmer? I don't know, in terms of visual design, I've so far been pleased with what Bethesda is doing with races, but after how Bosmer were portrayed in past games, Bethesda will have a lot of work to do if they want people to take them seriously.

Bosmer have been some of the best, most-memorable characters. I would prefer Bethesda to keep on making Bosmer their own unique individuals, and not cave in to demands to make all Bosmer fit some stereotypical vision of cool.

Umm what? The Bosmer were originally (and in lore) completely different than the way they were portrayed in Morrowind and Oblivion. It's not like we are trying to make them change them into something they're not, we are trying to change them back to what they were in Arena and Daggerfall, tall, slender cannibalistic people that have a love for fighting and are accustomed to using every part of a kill and not some short, pudgy annoying swit that either has lost a ring, loved you in the arena or kept defaulting on his contracts.

The above description of what Bosmer originally were is far from "stereotypical"

Don't take me wrong, I really like the Bosmer race and their background.

I think contrasting against a stereotype makes some players think of Bosmer as "short, pudgy annoying" swits. I don't find them to be annoying swits, so the problem isn't with the Bosmer, it is with the perception.

Fair enough, but the short, pudgy annoying Bosmers must die and give rise to the return of the old Bosmers like a pheonix from the ashes!!!!

But basically from the screens we got, it seems that Bosmer are tall, lean cannibals again, hurray!

I don't like Bosmer. That might of course be a result of them being annoying, so I agree they should be indeed better portrayed this time.

They should add one deep voiced awesome assassin Bosmer, but he should still be short.

No tall and lean bosmers plz.

I always found Bosmer irritating as well. Their look was awful in Oblivion if you ask me. Their heads were too egg-shaped and their hair was over-exaggerated. I do hope they adopt a more realistic approach to the Bosmer. More like the elves in the LOTR. They had such a great beauty to them.

Again! I find this idea of turning a race into another IP's race extremely unimaginative. It's unoriginal, and very boring. Hell, if the users here had it their way, the orcs would look like carbon copies WoW orcs, Warhammer orcs, or LotR orcs.

The bosmer should be the shortest of all the races, especially the males. In addition, to give some indication of their carnivorous diet, they should have pointed teeth. And lastly, a more savage look. These guys live in a giant forest, in which they are not allowed to harm or use any plant life and use the body parts of non-plants as weapons, cloths, armor, booze, etc. These are not your elegant and beautiful elves, these guys are savage. Hell, even the altmer make a point against them in the creation myth
"Auriel pleaded with Anu to take them back, but he had already filled their places with something else. But his soul was gentler and granted Auriel his Bow and Shield, so that he might save the Aldmer from the hordes of Men. Some had already fallen, like the Chimer, who listened to tainted et'Ada, and others, like the Bosmer, had soiled Time's line by taking Mannish wives.

Wait, so... Bosmer used to have children with men? Wow, I didn't know that. Has that something to do with their look? I mean, being the shortest and not so "elvish" as Dunmer or Altmer.

You forgot about the Bosmer that obsess over the color of their shirt in relation to their twin lol. I agree and I think there are many that do, Bosmer shouldn't be a mostly joke race like in Oblivion. There should be funny or annoying characters from all the different races, not just one race.

I find that they didn't take human wive, but women who were quite manly and more barbaric. As you see, to the altmer, the humans were nothing but cavemen, at best, to the sophistication and superiority of the altmer.

Also, the short male, tall female was a conscious dev choice to further be screwy with the race. In real life, and in game, males are taller than females in general with humans. Well with the bosmer, it's the opposite, and there was something about gender issues or something. I largely forgot which dev, and what dev it was who said it, as it had been a few years. All I know was that it was in the Lore Forum.

Tall, lean, and cannibalistic would be good, but I hope some of the short, pudgy ones are spared. I look forward to a better variety of voices too.

Nothing wrong with them in the first place. The males should stay short. Bosmer were never tall, only the females.

Aengvir, Amragor, Anglor, Anguilon, Athragar, Athrelor, Baenlin, Baeralorn, Brellin, Brithaur, Brodras, Bolwing, Caenlin, Caenlorn, Cingaer, Cingor, Daenlin, Dervenin, Engorm, Enilroth, Eridor, Erthor, Fimmion, Fithragaer, Foroch, Gelephor, Glarthir, Gloorolros, Gundalas, Gwinas, Hagaer, Hundolin, Maenlorn, Maglir, Nedhelfin, Niraegaer, Nordinor, Rindir, Thadon, Thaurron, Thoronir, Thrangirfin, Thurindil, Ungolim, Uungor, Uuras, Adanrel, Angrond, Alawen, Althel, Andragil, Anedhel, Boroneth, Bothiel, Carwen, Ciindil, Cutter*, Dagail, Dairihill, Degil, Dennilwen, Dredhwen, Elragail, Elsynia, Faurinthil, Ganredhel, Githriian, Hasathil, Huurwen, Idrolian, Laenafil, Laralthir, Mandil, Methredhel, Nilawen, Parwen, Syl, Telaendril, Thaedil, Thalfin, Thamriel, Thiirchel, Uurwen.

This is every Bosmer in Oblivion. How many were "comic relief"? Not the vast majority. Not even half were "comic relief". A very small minority were comic relief or annoying.

Shorter guy in the background? Could be. Maybe thats why hes shorter than the dude in the foreground. could be Nord VS Imperial. Hard to tell because I cant see the dudes ears.
