Are cars OP?

Post » Sun Jan 17, 2016 2:36 am

Car explosions that is!... And explosives in general?

Since explosives have a high immediate damage they negate the majority of DR. I save my explosives for boss/legendary fights and they are always over very quickly, too quickly in some respects.

Of course, it works both ways - especially In terms of cars. During a fire fight I do give cars a wide berth but sometimes just forget. Next thing I know I'm having to go back to my last save because I stood next to a 200yr old wreck that seems to have the same explosive power as a mini nuke.

What do yo guys think? Does explosive damage needs to be tweaked?

I agree with you. While logical in game lore terms, from a game mechanics standpoint they're too powerful an explosion.

Anyway, if they have enough nuclear material to explode, why don't we get the nuc material out of all the cars we scrap at Sanctuary or Starlight?

I doubt that, if you're even remotely close during combat they will get hit by stray bullets...

I would love to be able to farm cars for nuclear material.... That would be awesome.

Yep. Been killed by exploding cars on more than one occasion. Of course, I have USED exploding cars to clear a row of enemies on more than one occasion as well. (nicely timed for the supermutant suicider. :) ) Seems only fair.

I actually find grenades rather useful. Nothing like sneaking up to the doorway of a room full of bad guys (things....) and tossing in a couple. I get a great deal of pleasure out of hearing them scream "GRENADE!!", and then it gets real quiet.......

and I remember scrapping Red Rocket, needing to build 1 or defense turrets that need gears, and only getting Steel from ALL of those cars! LOL!

Early in the game I learned the hard way not to use cars for cover during combat!

It's the kamicrazy BOS pilot's that piss me off. I'll be in the middle of a firefight and one will randomly turn up and I'm all like, "ah, my brother's have come to my aid!" Then they proceed to fly their vertibird into whatever I'm taking cover behind. Idiots.

explosions should be able to kill the hardest enemies easily... they're explosions after all :D

I just think there are a bit too many grenades and missiles lying around everywhere

Apropos cars, I'm more perplexed about that there are no trunks to loot this time around, only the occasional truck or APC.

You want to see something cool.

Spoiler
If you havent already, find Tucker Memorial bridge and approach from Taffington Boat house side. Either set off or shoot the first mine. Though it was funny.

Considering that cars run on nuclear engines, then it would be weirder if they didn't create a massive explosion.

I like them just the way they are but I would concede that they are a bit on the OP side. But if I get blown up by a car that is my fault for not paying attention to the environment which adds a layer of difficulty. On the other-side my trap character loves them and uses them to put increase his landmines lethality.

Wasn't this explained in the Fallout 3 game notes during loading screens? Of course if you didn't play FO3, you wouldn't know this.

Yeah, that's why there are no red rocket gas stations, only red rocket coolant stations. (correct me if I'm wrong)

I tested each MG turret to see how much damage they can do.. their power steadily increases untill it hits the explosive mark 7... then it suddenly when from 20 barely being able to kill a few with a mark 5 to them utterly wiping out the airports defenders with no real damage to the turrets.

explosive weapons are really on the top teir only matched by weapons that have the TWO shot prefix in addition to a high base damage. (i have a two shot automatic assault rifle i love)

I have to say that they are not OP because they take longer to set off than Fallout 3. In FO3 you could pop some rounds in a car, and a few seconds later BOOM!

But in FO4, the bad guys move a lot faster and it can be challenging to time the car explosions just right.

So yeah, the exposions may cause more damage than FO3, but it's no where close to being some kind of "get of jail for free" trick.

This reminds me of setting those cars off at the drive in theater in Fallout 3. It was so fun blowing those raiders up lol!

They at least give a warning when they're about to blow...

Always remove them from settlements...probably what kills your settlers most of the time.

It's been a while since F3. I played F:NV since. I can't recall anything in loading screens in F3 about car engines and the effect it has on them exploding. Can you jog my memory please.

Well, it just goes to show you what would happen in a universe without Ralph Nader lol.

It doesn't make sense that cars explode when hit by bullets, and for several different reasons.

First, anything that unstable would explode in a low-speed collision -- therefore not a very good design.

Second, nuclear reactors should not not have combustible components.

Third, the worst that should happen if you hit a nuclear reactor is a leak of whatever is being used as a coolant, which would be apparent by your Geiger counter ticking faster, maybe some burns, but probably nothing worse.

BTW, I know we are not talking about combustion engines, but it's been shown on Mythbusters that engines do not explode when hit by normal firearms. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I seem to recall the only way they could get an engine to explode was by using incendiary bullets.

Yup, but Fallout is a parody about a world filled with funny nuclear stuff. Cars have to explode therefore in a nuclear blast.

Cars need to take pretty high damage to explode at once, with an weak gun you need to shoot pretty much on them just to get them to burn.
