Are Companions Too Powerfull?

Post » Wed Jun 24, 2009 8:10 am

None of them has really been too powerful to me.
Mirelurk Kings, Deathclaws, Giant Radscorpions, BOS, Veteran Rangers, Centurions, Cazadors, 3 - 5 super mutants, nightstalkers.
Tons of enemies I have to babysit my companions through.

I tend to use companions as weapons, first I make an effort to recruit them all, then as they are recruited I send then to Lucky 38 for storage, I will then go and fetch the companion that will offer the best assistance for what I intend.

If using the correct tool for the job makes combat too easy so be it.

This was probably talked about at some point in time, and i do apologize if this is in the wrong section. But heres my gripe.

At level 7 on Very Hard/hardcoe, i found my first companion in ED-E. As awesome a companion he is, i quickly realized how EASY the game became with his Over aggression, Incredible Perception, and Lasers that seem to burn down victims in two hits. Because of how much thunder ED-E was taking out of combat fun, i decided to let him go.

ED-E really got a big time buff with the patch.
Yesterday, after reinstalling the patch(which I don't really like for a certain nerfing decision), I went on with an early save at lvl 8, and started my skill book collection tour again.
Went northwest from the Mojave outpost, when all of a sudden I was surrounded by 3 giant radscorps.
'Oops, I smell a reload', was the thing that came into my mind. but to my surprise, before I was even finished making up my mind how to solve this issue, 2 of them were already set on fire, by the formerly -combatwise- useless ED-E, WTF? :ahhh:
Still, there are many occasions were you'll find yourself protecting your companions or simply having them wait outside certain locations.
I'd rather not taking them to the quarry junction, as an example. And like others said already, it's always better to have them a little bit too strong than a little bit too weak. Nothing is more annoying than always having to pamper and micromanage fragile companions. I wouldn't bother using them, if they were like that.

(I'm on 360)
The poll didn't have an option for me to pick. See, I have 3 companions via a glitch. (2 Humans and one robot)
But companions are a bit overpowered, but I kinda like overpowered, just like I like leveling up from level 1-15 in one day, cuz I'm different.

I'm on the 360 also. how did you glitch to get 3 companions?
I think the number of companions you can have should vary on your level, notorierity/karma, and skills/STATS, so you can have the option of a small specialised squad. The fallout team are after all trying to make it realistic, some people can lead people and start up their own gangs/squads/groups...

Back to the original point though. Early on in the game, the companions do all the work, but later on I find all 3 of you can get kicked in royally by certain enemies and by being outnumbered. Sometimes the companions perform well, other times they are an immense burden, and I personally have had to save their asses
more times then i'd care to

Not with the http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=38623 mod they're not. ;) (unless you pair it with a multiple-companion mod as well, haha!)

But yeah, in the vanilla game they are definitely over-powered in the beginning, especially the humans (if you give them decent armor). However...you have to remember that it's a RPG and companions that can often hold their own may be important to anyone who wishes to roleplay a non-combat skilled character. That is, a low END/STR, high CHA, high speech/barter/lockpick/hacking etc. type character. *shrug*

The self-healing thing...don't see anything wrong with that myself. They don't heal themselves much in actual combat, only when done. And from a roleplaying perspective...my chr. certainly wouldn't want to go into combat with some svcky/half-useless fighter. I like that they're relatively capable...less babysitting.

Sounds like i'm missing out on a lot playing it on the 360 rather then all you pc whiz kids modding it however you see fit and changing any part of the game...
Is there anything you guys cant change? Just seems a little unfair :D

I made the switch wih FNV from PS3 to PC on this game and I'm really glad I did. I'd been thinking about learning to mod since Oblivion. It wasn't hard to do just to get started. My first choice in mods is the Unlimited Companions mod so on them being powerful...well, yeah, I have 4 this game and it's a squad of 5 of us. I didn't mean to have 5 but I have a problem firing them. :D Raul is so funny that I don't want to let him go and Boone and ED-E have been with me for all 5 games so it's like their perks are my own and we're old friends.

What I'm getting at...if you're thinking about doing it, I think you'll be happy you did. There are bugfixes for PC that I can't get on my PS3 version, unfortunately...still hoping for another patch on that.

IDK, I think companions like ED-E and Rex spoil your sneak profile with their hyper-aggression and high perception. I usually have to leave either of those two at home when I'm Deathclaw hunting with Boone or sniping Legion troops from below 600 yards.

To answer the question, in a word: Nope.

As for the poll, I think combat is the same, on average. Companions are there to help. They are supposed to make things a little easier for you. However, if you're feeling like combat is too easy, gather some companions and take a little stroll into any Cazador nest or Deathclaw area.

I also don't think we're all playing the same game here. I tried playing New Vegas on Very Hard once. Ed-E DIED within a half hour after I picked him up - I strayed from the road near the Mojave Outpost and got massacred by Nightstalkers. Boone died in a battle against *ants*. Veronica died in Vault 34 - on the first level, *before* I encountered the glowing ones. In addition to ALL of that, it took me about a dozen rounds to drop a [censored] Scorpion Gang leader. I don't know what the hell game some of you are playing on Very Hard (and finding it easy), but I just don't think it's New Vegas.

Lots of things you can't change. But not a lot that matter to most people. Myself, I don't change too much of the core gameplay most of the time, unless it's to make the combat harder (like removing the sneak-crit multiplier). Sometimes I say screw it and go hog-wild with companion-games for kicks & giggles (and making videos, haha) tho. PC-mods are definitely fun to experiment with and for extending the longevity of the game. If it wasn't for the mods, I'd have stopped playing the game by now. :)

So theres no companion bug to exploit on the 360 then?
One human and one robot just isn't enough for me. I'd happily ditch a robot for another human companion...

Would never make the change from 360 to pc for a few reasons
1. I dont have a computer powerful enough to make decent use of the game.
2. I love using the 360 controller and sitting in front of a large tv.
3. I'm just not a pc person

You can use 360 controller on a computer you know? :hubbahubba: But seriously i tried out unlimited companion mod, gave them combat and power armor. Nothing NOTHING could stop us it wasn't fun to play so I don't use it. My point is that you probably wouldn't like it to much.

The grass always looks greener on the other side :goodjob:

Anyone know if you can give Lily something else to wear without modding it on the pc? :P
And does anyone else think she's incredibly weak compared to veronica?
I do love her personality tho, which is why i keep her... and that sword....

Rex is defiantly overpowered.

One bite from him makes the fiends fly away, he even killed one of the main fiends all by himself! (the one with the golf club)

I have to say companions do ruin the combat a bit because I become to reliant on them at early levels

sure when your level 30 with power armour, berrata 50 cals and fat mans your companions dont reallyprovide much help against harder enemys like deathclaws by still necessary for back up. its just early on in te game they allowed me to do harder quests without taking damage as I would send them into combat as they always lose their health at a slower pace so I could attack the enemy from behind.
