Are Companions Too Powerfull?

Post » Tue Jun 23, 2009 9:46 pm

This was probably talked about at some point in time, and i do apologize if this is in the wrong section. But heres my gripe.

At level 7 on Very Hard/hardcoe, i found my first companion in ED-E. As awesome a companion he is, i quickly realized how EASY the game became with his Over aggression, Incredible Perception, and Lasers that seem to burn down victims in two hits. Because of how much thunder ED-E was taking out of combat fun, i decided to let him go.

However later in the game, I found Veronica and AGAIN found her to be way too powerful. Even her default Power Fist, just completely destroyed almost every enemy i fight, even Cazadors.

Am i alone when i am forced to gimp my companions because of fear of leveling too fast?? Or compromising the difficulty?? I mean, i feel like using companions in this game are more like a novelty and not a neccessity like in the older Fallout games. (In FO:2 you absolutely needed companions, or you would just be destroyed in mid-game battles.)

Oh yes... and why do Companions Auto-Heal so easily??? I was surprised to watch Veronica get mauled by Cazadors crying in agony, and when the battle was over, she was full health!!!!

What is up man...really. Is this was games has come too? Easy mode...even on hard?

Rant off

Yeah dont get me wrong, i love the concept of hardcoe mode. Just when my girlfriend who never plays video games, comments how strong Veronica is without a gun. Then you must wonder. haha

It depends on the fight. There have been many times when I thought exactly what you're saying, when Rex and Boone (together, no less) would dominate everything before I got a shot off. However, there have been times when I've been very glad to have them, and almost died despite them. In fact, I had to fight to keep them alive when raiding Caesar's camp, and take on his guards alone to prevent their instant deaths.

I think they're just right.

Yeah man, was very disappointed with the lack of patrols and randoms.

After Novac, enemy encounters just dropped off the map. And fiends are just target practice.

yah its pretty bad that they couldnt incorporate those simple things into the game like combat. The fiends were just so low and makes me angry that i wasnt challenged one bit against them.

Mods can help, in the combat department as well. Also balance mods can help mitigate the "overpowered" feeling if you think to. I used : http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=37306 That one.

(I'm on 360)
The poll didn't have an option for me to pick. See, I have 3 companions via a glitch. (2 Humans and one robot)
But companions are a bit overpowered, but I kinda like overpowered, just like I like leveling up from level 1-15 in one day, cuz I'm different.

Sometimes 2 companions is too much but sometimes it is not enough. Even with 2 companions the deathclaws in Quarry Junction are a nightmare since they can take out even high level companions in one or 2 hits.

Not with the http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=38623 mod they're not. ;) (unless you pair it with a multiple-companion mod as well, haha!)

But yeah, in the vanilla game they are definitely over-powered in the beginning, especially the humans (if you give them decent armor). However...you have to remember that it's a RPG and companions that can often hold their own may be important to anyone who wishes to roleplay a non-combat skilled character. That is, a low END/STR, high CHA, high speech/barter/lockpick/hacking etc. type character. *shrug*

The self-healing thing...don't see anything wrong with that myself. They don't heal themselves much in actual combat, only when done. And from a roleplaying perspective...my chr. certainly wouldn't want to go into combat with some svcky/half-useless fighter. I like that they're relatively capable...less babysitting.

I figured playing the game while wearing faction armor could definetly make this a little tougher. Thats the plan actually, on my Ranger playthrough.

Their meant to be equals to you if you use their skill set ( Boone with guns, Gannon EW, lily melée, ect) plus if your doing the 'don't kill a soul' run through, your going to need them to be strong. If legion assassins show up, if Boone dies, then it's "oooohh boy...not good." for you

Yeah, Cazadors + Boone on hardcoe mode is a bad mix. They completely and utterly obliterate him! Getting to red rock,
Geez, I must have reloaded the save 20 times in hopes of saving his pitiful life...

There's no question about combat being easier with companions, but I'm not at all bothered by it. In fact I love that I don't have to babysit them.

To be honest, i think it would be better if they could die in all modes. Or they regenerate alot more slowly. Right now Boone is just a killing machine and rex is nearly as good, it gets irritating sometimes

Death is what put me off companion in FO3.

To be specific, it is erratic AI which makes mortal companion such a hassle.

I wouldn't vote because Rex/ED-E+humanoid seems balance for low charisma characters.

huh... every time I come up against anything stronger then a bloat-fly my vanilla companions (the 1's that come with the game) screams WATCH OUT! (or something similar) then run away lol.

the only exception is the modded companion I dled because the normal 1's are so bad. I also Dled some difficulty enhancers and play on hardcoe very hard.

a good companion is a must for me, 2-3 shots from a 9mm will kill my character.

anyway, based on my experience in the vanilla game (not modded) companions make no difference at all. i usually killed whatever b4 the companion ever realized it was there.

I can definitely say that my companions are very powerful because I always take high Charisma and that affects Companion Nerve from +5 at CHR1 to +50 at CHR10. The more damage they can dish out, the better I like it. :) If I want to do it all by myself, I'll just leave them at home.
