Are Dragon Shouts creating a bad precedence?

Post » Mon Mar 29, 2010 8:18 am

They're the same thing...

Not exactly. The Graybeards use the Thu'um, the dragonborn uses the Dragon Shouts. Being your the first dragonborn since Martin, then your abilities are unique compared to the Graybeards. The Nords have long practiced the Thu'um, and the strongest users were the Tongues. It was their siege weapons, and a long practiced art.

1-Dragon Shouts, are Dragon borns speaking in dragon.
2-So as long as you are a desendant of this particular person it could be done for future games.
3-they could add something diferent.
Like a The 9 Shout. you use spacial Powers granted by the 9, or what ever they think is cooler.

So powers just so your character feel more special than any other person or hero.

This one you are not just destiny, or chance that made you a hero, you are one of the last dragon borns that every conidered extint when the tiber septim line ended in TES4.

Depending on how the game playis out, i could like this for future games.

I hope these special abilities are just for this game.

And not some recycled renamed thing either.

I recall Todd saying in an interview Dragon Shouts are indeed Thu'um.

Great point OP, I had not thought of that yet. Indeed if we get amazing powers in Skyrim people will expect something even more "Shiny" for the next instalment in the TES series. This could turn out to be a big problem.

Especially, if it comes at the expense of spellcrafting and schools of magic with depth, not just offense.

well oblivion had us travelling all over mehrunes dagon's realm, and hopping around other realms of oblivion... and then running all over sheogorath's realm...

do you think people are expecting us to be doing that in skyrim?

...oh, wait... i do recall seeing alot of topics about that... "which daedric realm do you want to see in skyrim" polls, etc...

...well,those people are just ignorant... if people get upset because something in a past game isnt in a future game, they apparently dont care for te games being unique, they are likely just FPS fans coming into the elder scrolls series, expecting every game to be exactly the same... you know, like what they're used to.

It depends if the next hero is Dragonborn, if he isn't then he won't have Dragon Shouts.

Yep, I understand the lore argument (No dragonborn = no dragon shouts)

I look at this from a Bethesda business decision point of view. I mean, they are developing some very new powers here, that players will hopfuly enjoy and depend on. Powers that can slow down time or push opponents down, for example take alot of time and effort to develop. I think Bethesda will find a way to keep these powers in the game after skyrim. Possibly as new spells. I guess time will tell

I think the dragon shouts are fine, each game will in fact have its own thing...

As fo future games they still have the black marsh (argonian homeland) Summerset isle (high elves) as well as the homelands of al other races, though i think after this one they will be combining them. In the distant future id like to see an elder scrolls game based from a daedra's perception.. the point would be to ascend to the rank of a new daedric prince through assailing and destroying the realm of tamriel.. When the time comes, (maybe 20-30 years from now) they will inevitably combine all the nations they have done so far into THE elder scrolls game. Call it: Elder Scrolls VIII Chronicles of Tamriel. Will be all lands in a massive sandbox game.

Yep, just like how all the new players expect the Daedric Realms to be included because Oblivion was based around one.

There were Spears in Morrowind, then none in Oblivion. There were Oblivion Gates in Oblivion, but they will not be in Skyrim. There were dragonshouts in Skyrim, but they will not be in ______.

I think it'll be like the sigil stones. Are we upset because we lost the sigil stones? No because they were replaced by the Dragon Shouts. My guess is that TES VI will have something similar to a super power that sets it apart from the others.

The fact that the OP is worried because dragon shouts has its own button and seems majorly part of the gameplay, Will this mean these special abilities be renamed and packaged into another upcoming sequel?

While with the oblivion gates you could ignore for a very long time because their places.

1) no
2) we would have to play as the dragonborn in future games, doubtful but possible.
3) Dragonshouts are a nessisary part of Skyrim not for future games that can be debated later on.

The simple solution is to add were-dragons to future games, allowing you access to dragon powers! :shifty:

Dragon shouts are only a fancier version of greater powers anyway. The difference is the 'cool' factor and maybe the time it takes to speak all words needed for the most powerful shout. But basically it's a powerful spell that can be cast once per day (or a similar interval) without any magicka cost - just like a greater power in Oblivion.

Im not a big fan of the dragonshout mechanic, so I wouldnt mind not seeing them again

Lol, how do you know? I really don't see how you could "not be a fan of the mechanic" when you nor anyone else outside BGS has ever even used Dragonshouts in a TES game.

I suspect you mean precedent.
Precedence means something quite different.

And the answer to the question is no, they're not creating a precedent. Dragon Shouts are particular to this story and theres no reason why they should affect future games in TES series IMO.

Also, this^ = Simplest explanation. Reinforced by the fact that Todd and the team purposely like each TES game to be unique and stand on it's own while still existing in the same universe with the same lore and timeline. Each game will have it's own uniqueness, while still being an obvious "upgrade" on old designs.

Ok so dragon shouts are going to give us some cool extra powers in Skyrim. Right? So what is Bethesda going to do for future ES games? There probably won't be any dragons, if they are all killed off in skyrim. So will dragon shouts (or similar power) be removed from elder scrolls games after Skyrim, possibly disappointing the fans? (especially new ES fans created from the Skyrim release)

What are your thoughts?

Unless Dragonborn becomes the new emperor of Tamriel and has a family that will continue the line (or the nine divine give someone else the power), this is probably it. We only have dragon shouts because dragons have them. In the next TES game, we will likely have a new opponent which is 100 times better than dragons. Get excited!

I think they'll be removed, just like there won't be Oblivion gates and Sigil Stones in Skyrim.
