Are Dwemer Short?

Post » Sun Jun 03, 2012 2:45 am

My friends were saying that Dwemer are short little Dwarves, but I was under the impression that they were the same height as the average human is?

I don't really know.... I've always just assumed that Dwemer were like other mer as to height/body style etc. The "dwarf" thing has seemed to me because they were logicians, who preferred underground living.

I haven't researched it, as it's not something I really care much about. So my impressions are just that.

I'd say, as far as Elder Scrolls lore goes, that they were normal sized humanoids... I'm just guessing based off of how large their furniture and weapons and miscellaneous items were scaled.

Though.... the "chairs" and "tables" are really low to the ground....

Aren't the Dwemer some form of Elves, that would make them range from normal height to a little bit taller then normal height.

Short? No.
Bearded? Yes.
Dead? Yes.
Lived Underground? Yes.
Atheistic "Worshippers" of Logic and Reason? Yes.

Dwarves == Dwemer == Deep Elves (also similar to the word Dweomor, enchanted aura around a magic item.)

Since they were Mer, I'd assume they were elf height.

I imagine them as a bearded version of the Altmer. Back when they were around, only the Bosmer were pink-skinned among elves; the others were all golden-skinned, AFAIK. The Chimer became the Dunmer concurrently with the Dwemer's disappearance.

According to Ma'iq they are the same size as other mer, and they got the dwarf tag from Giants.

Does anyone find it odd that Bretons are among the shortest of Men yet there supposed to have originated from intermingling wth Mer?
Since they were Mer, I'd assume they were elf height.
Stand an Altmer next to a Bosmer male, Elves have some range.

Giants who were, incidentally, the ancestors of men. However dwarves looked 5000 years ago, chances are good whatever populations survived (assuming such a thing is possible, which is unlikely) look very different. For all it's interesting lore, TES still manages to offer up Orcs that are Orcs, High Elves that are High Elves, and Wood Elves that are Wood Elves. Rest assured, if Bethesda ever feels the need to introduce Dwarves into an Elder Scrolls game, they will be Dwarves, and they'll explain it in whatever way they have to. and yes, all the lore junkies will rage but go ahead and buy the game and play it for 800 hours anyway.

Judging by the few Dwemer ghosts seen in Morrowind, they were probably as tall as male bosmers. Other elves may have called them dwarves or maybe it's because the first non-mer records of their existence comes from the giants' oral tradition.

I kinda hope they do introduce Dwarves, and as playable characters. And they better be shorty and stocky!
And I am quite sure Beth could come up with a plausible way of doing that without contradicting the Lore. As we all know, even in the real world, commonly accepted history , especially history as ancient and as vague as the stories about the Dwemer are, is often shown to be totally wrong, so a break from TES lore is not as big a problem as some seem to think.

No. As much as I worship Tolkien, LOTR (and WoW) have done TES a great disservice. Contrary to popular belief, the Dwemer were NOT dwarves. They're about the same physical stature as their Chimer/Dumer and Altmer cousins. Especially according to the lore here:

Appearance
As previously mentioned, the Dwemer were no shorter than any other elven race, despite being classically described as such. Their physical appearance is hard to judge, as http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Yagrum_Bagarn lives bloated and deformed by http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Corprus, and the only other visual examples come from sculptures and http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:Undead#Dwarven_Spectres found in their ruined dwellings. It can be deduced, however, that long beards were popular amongst the lost elves, and they preferred heavy metal armors and robes. Their remaining features could be described similarly to that of the other elven races, as no specific information exists....
http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Dwemer

and this is also supported by this wiki entry here:

The Dwemer are an ancient race of evles that are commonly mistaken as dwarves. Within Skyrim, there has been no proof of the presence of Dwarves, thus the Dwemer where in place.
....
http://skyrim.neoseeker.com/wiki/Dwemer

As an in game example, here's a comparision of Dwemer (left) and Altmer (right) Elven armor.
http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx346/watersprite2008/DwemervAltmer.jpg

Then again, these armor suits were put on 2 of my mannequins, so they might be the same height by default. My Nord never had any issues wearing Dwemer armor. But then again I suppose an Orc or Bosmer character could equally fit into the same suit of armor as well.

So perhaps the best way to tell is compare actual racial physical sizes. The Bosmer are the shortest and smallest of both Man and Mer species, while Altmer are technically the tallest. Try to verify this next time visually while in game. I had a hard time doing this since I've only played a Nord so far, and haven't encountered any Bosmers yet. Besides, Nords are also tall, so it kind of hard to judge by looking at any of the Thalmor.

the remaining structures from the dwemer point out a normal height for those beings. (normal = as the others humans, elfs)

the doors, the chambers themseves, steps form stairs, furniture, etc...

if it were for a shorter lifeform, it wouldn've been accesible to the current races to use. (starting from buildings to armor / weaponry)

imagine a dwemer warhamer the being half-size, or the shield ...

This is an awful idea. Tes Lore has actually managed to remain somewhat unique in a market crowded with fantasy games/books/movies that all use the same basic formula. How about we encourage Bethesda to continue to try and keep Tes unique instead of just making it just another entirely run of thee mill fantasy world.
