Are Mods Worth it?

Post » Tue Dec 21, 2010 5:30 am

I totally plan on building my own PC now. I got a taste of the witcher at my friends place and that game made want to build a new rig right then and there. Once skyrim comes out I wont even have an excuse not to build a rig. So Yea mods are worth it if not other benefits.

(Also: Off topic,I plan to spend b/t 500$-1200$ price range if anyone has suggestions drop them on me.) :hubbahubba:

There's no doubt in my mind the mods are an essential for long term enjoyment of Elder Scrolls game

Morrowind would be pretty well impossible today without mods, and I'd certainly lose interest in Oblivion very quickly without a slew of mods to spice things up. For a start, I wouldn't play Oblivion for more than five minutes without something to deal with the horrible level scaling. And that's just the first consideration - before we talk about graphical upgrades, weather mods, quests, gameplay changes, a new UI and so on.

As for whether it is 'worth it', then you would have to assess a) how serious you are about spending time testing, installing and generally fiddling around with mods because - believe me - the process is far from straight forward, and B) whether you can afford it. Without trying to sound flash, I'm in a position to be able to afford a decent gaming rig, and so spending £1000 on a PC is not going to compromise me financially. But not everyone could do this. But if it comes down to buying a gaming rig versus putting food on the table, well, that's a different matter....

If your a student on a fixed income it might be best to stick with consoles for now.But if you got the the cash to spend then there is no reason not to right?

I have another question. If I buy a decent gaming rig and then upgrade the graphics card, would I have to upgrade other things so the graphics card actually ran at a decent framerate?

Another reason for playing on the PC is access to the console. With this in Oblivion you can:-

Get yourself unstuck from scenery
Take screenshots
Remove the invisible walls round Cyrodiil
Resurrect dead NPCs
Cheat by, for example advancing quests.
check out your frame rate
Toggle off the grass so you can find your dropped sword in the grass

Tons of other stuff.

As regards mods, it seems many people think they just add stripper clothes to female NPCs and give you huge swords. There's plenty of this stuff available of course but I'd like to mention some small improvements to the game that mods can achieve rather than concentrate on the huge overhauls etc. So, for example with Oblivion mods you can:-

Denock arrows (Denock Arrow or Cobl)
Remove spells from your spell book (Spell Delete or Cobl)
Sleep on a bed rather than sleep standing up beside it. (See you Sleep)
Have darker dungeons so that night eye/torches are actually useful. (Cava Obscura or Let There Be Darkness)
Get Salmo the Baker to actually sell his stuff (Salmo the Baker or Cobl)

How can thesae things not be good?

Just be warned try to use as few mods as possible. They often cause instability and crashes if you don't use them properly. I use to swear by mods but now, after playing oblivion on the xbox 360 I realise the game is not so bad just on its own and, for me, mods often cause more trouble than they are worth :brokencomputer:

So? Some mods don't work on low end pc's. Just because some mods won't work for consoles it not a good argument that console should not get the ability to play mods.

Maybe, but how do you implement external apps like scrips extenders or mod managers into consoles? How do you modify .ini files, which a lot of good mods include? How do you navigate though folders? How do you run Wrye Bash on them? A lot of mods are much more than just "unzip-activate-play".

To include mods for consoles is to remove the simplification console users want. And if you're gonna to get rid of it, then do it well and move to a PC.

I am pretty sure they stated somewhere that if you can run Oblivion you can run Skyrim.

I would say Fallout 3 and New Vegas as they are newer with better graphic. But anything who can run Oblivion well would also be able to run it Skyrim.
Found that Oblivion run well on a 700$ laptop yesterday.

As I have been perusing this forum over the past week many of you seem to be huge PC enthusiasts. My question to you guys is, are mods really worth it? If so what is the best desktop I could get for under 1000 dollars. I am really on the edge here so this is your chance to convince me.

P.S. I am not looking to build a computer.

I'm sure you've been told this a lot, but the only way you're going to be able to afford a good gaming PC for under $1000 is by building. Everything else is overpriced and not of very good value. If you don't want to build it, find a friend who can.

And honestly, $1000 will get you something decent. I've spent $1300 on my high-end machine, and I built it. I also used a few things from my old machine (disc drive and the like) to save a little money.

Mods make Bethesda games incredible. Unmodded they are good, but not incredible.

Missing Skyrim + mods is like passing over the BEST GAME EVER.

Get a PC; or skip the best game ever. Your choice.

Definitely worth it.

Oscuro was later hired by Obsidian for Fallout: NV.

As a PC gamer I find that mods are extremely important in keeping me playing...After you've done all the quests ( I plan on it), what's left? I've taken all this time to make and build a character and
I will not just start over...Well-made mods and the possibility of creating your own mods allow the player to continue on in veins and ideas that were missed by the developers...And it looks like I'll be
waiting around for another werewolf mod for Skyrim like Cid88's wonderful 'Curse of Hircine' mod for Oblivion...Such a pity...

I played Oblivion for 6 months without mods on an older PC. I finally got a high-end PC which could handle max settings and added the OOO and Lost Spires mods. I love both of these mods. They add so much to the game. The Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul mod alone is amazing and I don't like playing without it anymore.

I think mods must be experienced to be appreciated, and there are so many more out there I haven't tried yet. And, I haven't even started making my own mods. Lots to still look forward to.

For me, the extra hours of entertainment these two mods gave me in Oblivion, was well worth the price of a new PC.

I haven't heard this anywhere, but it's true. Skyrim and Oblivion both run on the exact same consoles, so they should run on the exact same computers.

That's not necessarily true. Oblivion can run on a single core machine and the consoles have processors more powerful than the computer I ran Oblivion on.

Yes. Why? Look at this:

http://youtu.be/9NX-MvnYUEs

Yes, that's Morrowind. Yes, it really looks that good because of mods. Mods do so much for the series. Even if it won't look as good as on your Xbox (it will, though, or better, if you have a decent video card and a computer that's less than four years old) you will have much more content available to you.

Can you guys just give me stats that will guarantee a very smooth frame rate on high setting for Skyrim(with crazy mods)? I might look into building a computer or have cyerpower build on for me. Would you recommend cyberpower or ibuypower?

Let's put it this way...

Nehrim is a mod. Nehrim is better than any Elder Scrolls game ever made.

Yes, mods are worth it.

I understand that mods are worth it. I am more interested in what type of computer I should buy. I have no idea what I am doing in the computer world. Its better then making a whole new thread right?

Are mods worth it? Let's put it this way.

As good as Bethesda's games might be, I only play them as they ship maybe once.

As for a computer, given that the game is being made for antiques, any mid-range, off-the-shelf computer today could probably run it with little trouble.

I am truly glad that I whole-heartedly disagree with you in the entirety of your argument 'Mitheledh' ...There was a time when great games, like great novels were to be cherished, replayed and revisited with new perspective that gleaned new and refreshing insights as to the little details you might have missed previously...But I am old fashioned and quite sentimental...And it seems part of a dying culture...None of us can persuade you that mods are a really great tool to have and play...But...As a P.C. gamer I can tell you that mods have contributed greatly to my experience with the Elder Scrolls series, as they do with the developers, who have picked up on the possible short-comings of their previous games (This game most definitely included) by listening, seeing, and playing the creations that have been made for their games by the many devoted fans of their work who have chosen to add a little more color and definition to the wonderful world that the developers have created...So let 'Mitheedh' call me an antique...I don't mind at all...For as he will always be searching for the grass that seems to be a little bit greener on the other side of the fence...Continually and repetitively jumping... Seeking an elusive bliss that will always escape him for the emptiness that he can never fill...I shall tend to my own lawn and enrich it with the care and pruning it deserves...And let the roots grow deep...

Um, by "antiques" I was referring to the current generation of consoles. 5 years is a long time as hardware goes.

And I play the game through once, then I start modding and tweaking it to make it my own game. And my game is unique and different from anyone else's, because some of those tweaks are my own.
