are people that didn't like oblivion hoping that skyrim will

Post » Wed Dec 23, 2009 7:59 pm

Don't get me wrong, I loved Oblivion, it had beautiful graphics and had many places to explore but it lacked the depth and character that held Morrowind together so well.

Some of the biggest things lacking in my opinion were the creature leveling system as well as the travel system from Morrowind that actually made you explore the map.

To answer your question, I hope Skyrim brings back some of the features that Oblivion lacked.

I like to think the psychological undertone of what they're saying is that they don't want Bethesda to go in the same direction it did with Oblivion. Like being able to intuit that an Oblivion 2 isn't going to be fun.
But would rather them revert to using the same idea's from Arena, Daggerfall, Morrowind, and expanding on them.

I have some hopes for Skyrim to be better than Oblivion. Fallout 3 was a huge improvement over Oblivion, and I do hope that Skyrim will return to the awesome unique lore that made Morrowind so great. My hopes for that are rather small, though, considering how they butchered the lore in Oblivion (Cyrodiil was supposed to be a jungle, the Imperial City huge with lots of canols flowing through it, and the Imperials Roman/Renaissance style instead of generic fantasy...)

Generally, I'm mildly optimistic and wait for screenshots and a feature list to appear before making my judgement. ICurrently we don't know anything about Skyrim except that it's set in Skyrim (well, duh) and there will most probably be dragons.

Do I believe it will be more like MW? No. Do I hope? Yes.

OB was more like a video game to me, MW was a cRPG

I adore both Morrowind and Oblivion. I love Morrowind more, though, so I am very much hoping that Skyrim will be more like Morrowind. However, should it be more like Oblivion, I'd be okay with that, but be slightly disappointed.

If my hatred for what they did to cyrodiil wasn't so white hot and raging to this day I would have had to disagree with your pecimism, but admittedly I can't. T.T

tbh perfectly honest, even though I think as a game I enjoyed MW more, if I was comparing between the 2 I don't think I would want Skyrim to be more like MW than oblivion.

I would have to be quite specific

PS: what is the new two letter abbreviation for Skyrim, Sk?

I suppose it is possible that those who enjoyed Morrowind more would want Skyrim to be more like it. I personally do not want it to be too much like Morrowind. While Morrowind was an excellent game I did have a few issues with it. The Major/Minor Skill system took away the ability to really make any unique Class. There were far too many slots to fill. The preset Levels on the Creatures/NPCs also made it very unfriendly for new players. While it gave the game a challenge in the beginning it quickly became far too easy after about level twenty five. While I do not feel the leveling in Oblivion was much better, it did give the Game a more consistent feel. As well as it destroyed the ability to Power Game. Also the Hit Chance factor was unrealistic, and frustrating.

The only thing I want to transfer over from Morrowind would be the number of Skills, with far greater uses, and effects of course. The number of weapons, and armor variety. Not necessarily the same weapons types. Maybe the Dark Elf voices, other then that I feel Oblivion was much better. Still had it's own issues but it had far more polish.

Morrowind made me feel independant and capable, while being cautious. Oblivion made me feel restricted and sarcastic towards the world around me, with nothing to be afraid of. Oblivions gameplay was fantastic, but the interactions with the people were corny and forced.

So I hope Skyrim allows the PC to be more independant like in Morrowind.

Kind of a useless thread since 90% of people here want Morrowind 2.0.

I loved both Morrowind and Oblivion, so I'm not really against either game.

That said, I think Morrowinds scenery and worldbuilding was done much better and more interesting. Now that could've been because the province of Morrowind was much more interesting lore wise, but I still think that's a cheap answer because they expanded so much further on the lore than what was already stated of Vvardenfell. I think that where the fault truly lays is in the way each game was built. Morrowind was done by hand, completely. This gave it an advantage over Oblivion for, I think, the soul fact that the tools used to generate Oblivion were not as good as they could've been. Even after you did the region generation you had to go cell to cell cleaning up anyways, so it really took at least a little bit away from the uniqueness of it, and could have possibly caused stress on trying to create the artistic vision of the world in the time given.

I'm really hoping they've worked on their techniques enough to create a bigger world whilst still having it be unique, and interesting.

SK fits the name Skyrim better, SR just doesn't have the same strength.

But does it need abbreviating? It's really easy to type.

*Looks around*

People keep mentioning there being Morrowind fanatics and die-hard Oblivion haters... but I'm not seeing a single one around here. Not one. Everybody seems to have a pretty fair and reasonable opinion regarding both games. Then there's the OLDER school guys, the Daggerfall fans, who point out the perks of the older games.

So... where's the fanaticism? Are you so sure it's fanaticism you're complaining about, or just that people don't wholeheartedly agree with YOUR opinion about Oblivion?

There's absolutely no chance of Skyrim being closer to morrowind than Oblvion but it doesn't stop me from pointing ou the things morrowind did better :)

I do wish a mix of best elements from III and IV, but I'm not very confident right now when I see how New Vegas kicked F3's ass pretty bad.

It's personal, but that's also my main wish. I like to be thrown in a world, and scraqe to get by ; to discover it,get the locals not to mistrust me, avoid some places until I'm trained enough to deal with them. And so forth. I regretted that Oblivion brought everything on a plate to me, like the world actually adjusted for me. A player-centric game world may look more appealing at first glance, but on the long run, so less engrossing and rewarding.

I just think it's funny that, for supposed fanatics, that they don't jump on top of this thread instantly and start flaming it. We're already 3 pages in and not a single person in this thread strikes me as "fanatical."

What does that mean then? That the fanatics only come out of their hovels at certain times of the day, or that they hunt in packs? Or is it that they're deathly afraid of the new Skyrim section?

You're right, I just haven't seen them yet for sure, but I just find it funny that in a thread like this, there's not a single one around.

I'm sure karma's going to bite me in the ass for saying that though.
