are people that didn't like oblivion hoping that skyrim will

I think The Shivering Isles and Fallout 3 sort of proved that they were listening to fans.

I believe they once said that The Elder Scrolls V will be different to both Morrowind and Oblivion, and people will be up in arms again.

Personally, I hope they're right. I want this to be a unique game in its own right, that surpasses both Morrowind and Oblivion. Skyrim shouldn't be "Morrowind 2", nor "Oblivion 2".

I just think it's funny that, for supposed fanatics, that they don't jump on top of this thread instantly and start flaming it. We're already 3 pages in and not a single person in this thread strikes me as "fanatical."

I think that for the overwhelming part, we're all finding qualities and defects in both games. Posts only seem one-sided because it's not everybody that elaborate. Whenever people actually take the time to ditch the one-liners, they give a more reasonable 'best of both worlds' approach.

I'm pretty fanatical, and I do think more of Morrowinds concepts should be placed into Skyrim, simple, obvious stuff like not having only 4 guilds. However, it would be hard to try and replicate MW. There are some parts about Oblivion that I didn't like as much that weren't gameplay options, the soudtrack, the faces of NPCs. I think Skyrim has a chance to be better than both games, but only if they learn from the missteps they took with Oblivion, such as level scaling.

I want it to be like Skyrim. They should incorporate the lessons learned from Morrowind and Oblivion.

At any rate: most people complained about Oblivion because it just seemed to lack in creative inspiration compared to Morrowind. Oblivion was just another generic standard LotR/Medieval high fantasy setting, there was almost no inspiration and creativity in it. Also, Beth made some poor gameplay decisions in the design process, like for instance: the way to extensive leveled scaling and leveled loot, the bland and generic (though pretty) landscape and scenery, the obvious issues with scale, few joinable guilds that had no influence on each other, some clear contradictions with TES lore, etc, etc.

I do not want Skyrim to be Morrowind. But I would want to see some of that amazing creativity which we know Bethesda are capable of make it's way back to TES.

What does that mean then? That the fanatics only come out of their hovels at certain times of the day, or that they hunt in packs? Or is it that they're deathly afraid of the new Skyrim section?

You're right, I just haven't seen them yet for sure, but I just find it funny that in a thread like this, there's not a single one around.

I'm sure karma's going to bite me in the ass for saying that though.

Even from just reading the skyrim forums today, most posts I see are people that are quite clearly, first and foremost, morrowind fans. No they're not actually fanatical, so perhaps you could be a doll and excuse my flamboyant prose, as it was not meant to be taken literally. The reason I started the thread, is because I expected the skyrim forums to have more oblivion-centric fans than morrowind-centric ones, and that quite clearly is not the case. I personally found this suprising, and thus I started a thread to see what truth their was to it, i.e - how many people who are first and foremost morrowind fans have hopes that it will be more like morrowind than oblivion

I do love morrowind more than oblivion. I think they should take all the good points of ALL the games and hope to make a better one...hopefully they can make everybody happy.(wishful thinking I know...)

I have faith that Skyrim will be a good experience and top Oblivion and quite possibly Morrowind as well. I don't see why we have to decide which game Skyrim will be closer to.

SK fits the name Skyrim better, SR just doesn't have the same strength.

I think they′re both kinda bad.

I′m saying TES V. On the other hand that reduces the keys you need to press by only one. Might as well say Skyrim. :P

Bethesda really changed under Todd Howard's direction. I really don't have too much faith that they'll go back to the Morrowind style. The focus groups have spoken.

i like when people forget that Todd was project leader for Redguard and Morrowind too.

Oblivion was the way it was because nobody knew what the consoles would be able to handle, and because Bethesda wanted to try new things to ease the development process (namely the procedural terrain generation). it wasn't necessarily a bad game, but it wasn't what it should and could have been. Shivering Isles and Fallout 3 both improved on a lot of Oblivion's core failures within the scope of the engine, and i'm confident Skyrim will be a massive step in the right direction.

I loved Oblivion, it introduced me to the Elder Scrolls, I just liked Morrowind better though. It had more content, and I felt accomplished when I did something.

I think its hard to outright call one "better" than the other. Don't get me wrong, morrowind had far better immersion, but Oblivion had some advances that were very useful like the ability to cast magic and use a sword at the same time, horse (though no combat which I fully want to see in skyrim), AI packages, and a few other things. I personally hope that Skyrim has a more provincial style than Oblivion, I miss feeling like I was in the wilds. That said, some of Morrowind's aspects are old need an update. If you could apply a significant portion of the Oblivion engine to MW, you'd have a great game. But the team has been working for years and I'm confident in a good game. Besides, we'll just end up modding it anyway to be honest.

Skyrim doesn't have to be so close to Morrowind. Just having more content (factions, weapons, misc quests) than his predecessor will be great. After that, if they really wanted to make me happy, they could use a darker tone (as in, not as light-hearted as Oblivion) in Skyrim.

Short answer:
Yes

Longer answer:
I hope it will attempt to be its own unique game, but will also use aspects of Morrowind and Oblivion to create a mixed atmosphere that both parties can enjoy while also making the game better overall.

Anyone else in the same boat?

Yes and no? You're speaking of "people that didn't like Oblivion," which I'm not. I liked Oblivion. At least until Morrowind is brought in for comparison, at which point EyeCandyblivion begins to fall short in my opinion. Suddenly, from where I sit anyway, the focus of the game's design threw most any real substance or depth out the window and focused on eye and ear candy.

So yes, I'm hoping against hope the focus shifts drastically back in the other direction with Skyrim- got their eye and ear candy figured out, and can actually work on everything Oblivion fell flat in.

Of course I'm also not holding my breath...

If videogames had souls, Oblivion lacked one. Oblivion did so many things better than Morrowind, and yet it didnt manage to capture the FEEL of the gameworld, which killed the game for me. I only played Oblivion a fraction of the time i wasted from my life on Morrowind.
It was as if Oblivion had traded its soul to the devil in exchange of fancy new mechanics like full voiceovers but lost the most important thing in the process, the feel of adventure and exploration of an unknown world.

I think some of the best Morrowind aspects -will- return. More weapons, more factions, more varitey in general. Will game play, like losing fatigue while running, chance to miss, spell fail and casty hands come back? Nope probably not, but I remain hopefull on a leveling scale fix. If they fixed leveling scale and added armor weapon variety I would be estatic.

There's a reason so many people like MW better than OB, it was a better game.

Oblivion was better than Morrowind in many aspects, but overall, it was the lesser game. I still played the hell out of it, but the feelings left over by Morrowind are far more powerful.

Short answer yes.

Long answer: I'm hoping it to have best elements of Daggerfall and Morrowind, but if I had to choose one of which Skyrim would be most like, I'd say Daggerfall.

I liked both morrowind and oblivion.. but morrowind was a game that even with subpar graphics one could completely imerse themselves in. I would play that game for days on end, doing everything from questing to hunting to spelunking. Oblivion i beat the main quest in an afternoon, beat the BD in a couple hours, beat the fighters guild soon after and was like WTF what do i do now? I have seen most of the earth in a few short days of questing and cave diving, to be frank i felt kicked in the scrotum. Shivering isles gave me hope because it was very imersive and filled with confusion dementia everything to make it more intersting and keep me playing.

Now on to THE REAL PROBLEM, this big blanket statement that keeps getting thrown out. "i want Skyrim to be its own game" Really? so.. you would be ok if the completley broke the game away from the lore and skyrim was now in middle earth and was a fps? Its a idiom almost like bull in a china shop and i just mythbustered it.So lets knock that one off

For skyrim to be a sucess with both the fanbase and general public it will need to be based off of what was liked in ALL of the elderscrolls games. It needs to be more imersive like morrowind, yet have an easy button for the genpop. It needs to be action oriented, but not in a way that we lose it being an rpg and gain a hack and slash. It needs a complex world and storyline, but up to the point where it wont scare kids away because it looks too much like work.

Oblivion was meh at this, but it think given the development time and now actually having experence on the hardware Skyrim may give it to us. If it is a game i can finally check out of the world and into i will praise and help sell it. If not well i will probobly start playing fallout and morrowind again and send nasty letters emails make blog posts anything i can to keep people from disapointment.
I was let down by oblivion [but kinda impressed that that only took them 6 months of having the harware to make], and am hoping to have my favorite game back where it should be

There is one thing Bethesda needs to realize though, Even with the popularity of RPGs in recent years RPGs are not for everyone. Fable was popular because it is a simple hack and slash, sandwiched between a simple plot and a water piece of rpg

Fallout is popular because it is a rpg FPS hybrid [which i honestly never thought was gonna work, good one on that]

You should Shun your core just to keep the masses happy, because in the end the RPG fad will wane and youll be left with a group you have thuroughly disappointed several times that is now what you have left for customers

I am a massive Morrowind fan, and I have wasted much of my life playing that game. I still break it out every now and then. But I think Oblivion is a great game too. I just feel that it did not have the variety or wide-openness of Morrowind. I would not bash it as a bad game though. I loved Oblivion just as much. I just prefer MW.

I think that in some aspects they should make it more like Morrowind. Like in the size, and scope, and the unique items that were scattered and hidden throughout Vardenfell. The enviornment of course has to be different. But like in OB when you first enter the Shivering Isles, I don't know about you guys, but I got the feeling of Deja Vu, like I had been to a place like that before. And I had, Morrowind.

I'm just excited to see what they come up with next. The combat should be similar to OB, but with more of the positive aspects of MW.

I know what I'll be doing November 11th of next year!
