are people that didn't like oblivion hoping that skyrim will

Post » Wed Dec 23, 2009 9:01 pm

So it seems that alot of people on these here forums are of the hardcoe morrowind fan pursuasion. It's probably, then, not too much of a leap of logic, to assume alot of those folk didn't much like oblivion. Clearly, alot of people that were very disappointed with oblivion, have returned, in the hope that skyrim will be different.
So I ask thee - do you truly believe that skyrim will be more like morrowind?
I have a feeling alot of people that were massive morrowind obsessives have caved in to rampant fanboyism (myself included), and now believe skyrim will restore faith for all those who died a little inside when oblivion came out. I am one of these idiots, and ever since the announcement I've read this forum everyday, hoping for the best. But deep down I know it is probably going to be alot more like oblivion than morrowind, and that hurts. Yet my naive inner child will not let me convince myself of it, and so I will be hanging around here for probably at least an hour most days until release, hoping to god that they get it right this time.

Anyone else in the same boat?

Although I didn't hate oblivion, I still had 100+ hours, I didn't enjoy it as much as Morrowind, nor did I play it as much.

I just want more content and depth in Skyrim because Oblivion felt so empty.

From my perspective, it's not that I didn't like Oblivion - I still loved it - but it just wasn't the same experience as Morrowind. Bethesda had to cut out or redesign a lot of features from Morrowind that I liked in order to make Oblivion work for the next gen console of the time, and while I still enjoyed the game immensely, it makes me wish that those features could return in the future of the franchise.

So don't get me wrong. I do love Oblivion. But Morrowind holds a special place in my heart, and that's why I want Skyrim to learn from its lessons more than Oblivion's.

Oh, oh, I really hope that Skyrim is more like Skyrim. How about that? :hubbahubba:

But what I wish they do to satisfy everyone is add Casual and hardcoe modes for you to choose before starting a new save file:

In hardcoe you will get:
1. No fast-travel. You need to use Mages Guild/Dragons/Magic/Your feet/Gypsy Caravans to get to different locations.
2. 30+ skills! Or more than in casual which will probably be like 21 again or something.
3. No essential characters.
4. No "You need a key to unlock this complicated Dwemer mechanism of a lock".
5. No "This is a quest item. You'll have to carry it forever".
6. Cliff Racers.
7. All of the other complaints that MW fans have.

I believe that I have made a list like this one in another thread.

Yes I do! I thought one of the developers said "I think a lot of people will be happy with this one" or something like that in the Q&A, I think he means us Morrowind Fans. Don't get me wrong Oblivion is an AMAZING game but Morrowind was so much better.

Oblivion did some things very well. I much prefer the combat system in Oblivion to Morrowind. I love the revamped magic system. I love that you can actually raise you sneak skill in Oblivion. The radiant AI was a novel attempt, which with tweaking, would be a really neat feature. Skill perks were cool, although I wasn't a fan of the reduction in total number of skills, and the abolishment of minor skills.

If you took the technical/mechanical advancements made in Oblivion, and applied it the world and story of Morrowind, that would be my ideal game. I'm truly hoping that Bethesda doesn't pander to the larger, general mass crowd that prefers simplifications. I think they will though, because at heart they are a business that is driven to make profit. What most hard-core Morrowind fans want really conflicts with the larger market.

I'm thinking since they have made a new engine and are more experienced with the next-gen consoles, we will see a much better game. At least I hope.

Ditto. I mean, I put 150+ hours on Oblivion. I'm not a masochist. So much things were improved - you can hardly fault something like the DB quest line. But there was a charm, an immersion factor that got lost in the process.

Heh. I think Bethesda has proved its willingness to listen, learn and try to improve. I don't see why, right now, Skyrim wouldn't be the best of both worlds. :)

Bethesda really changed under Todd Howard's direction. I really don't have too much faith that they'll go back to the Morrowind style. The focus groups have spoken.

I'd say the fault is on both sides of the morrowind/oblivion fanaticism
although hardcoe morrowind fans often obsessively point out that morrowind did it better, oblivion fans are then quick to refuse to acknowledge these opinions just as stubbornly, because they are obviously influenced by a deep hatred for oblivion.
then we just argue and argue and nothing gets done
we're both equally as obnoxious :P

I agree with emekcrash. I can't wait for SKYRIM. It will be a new game, new technology. An improvement from Oblivion, like Oblivion was to Morrowind.

Will these morrowind fanatics please stop living in the past and stop ruining the happiness we true bethesda all feel that a new elder scrolls game is coming out. Really, its getting old. How long has this been going on now? I really think its time to get over it guys, really. It seems that most posts here are just whining from Morrowind fans who still haven't got over years of feeling as though Oblivon was an insult to them in some way. Believe it or not, Oblivion is a popular game, and lots of people enjoyed it, and STILL DO.

It seems as though if Skyrim is not an exact replica of Morrowind in every way, it will be an epic fail in your eyes. Well, best not get your hopes up then. :)

One more thing... about the fast travel. If you don't like it, then don't USE it. Its that simple. Why ban everyone else from using it because you don't like it? Noone's holding a gun to your head forcing you to fast travel. Its an option. So... again. Fanaticism.

I think Skyrim will move a little back towards Morrowind, but it will still be more similar to Oblivion than Morrowind.

I loved Oblivion, but I love Morrowind more.
So, yes. I do hope it feels more like Morrowind.

With Oblivion, they collected a larger/younger audience (which is always good for any business) But hopefully now they will show their newer fans what a TES game is really all about.

There are really just a few things that Morrowind did better then Oblivion limited level scaling, the story, the dungeons, variety, and the atmosphere.

I liked Oblivion a lot. But i LOVED Morrowind. I don't think i have ever played a game as much as i played Morrowind back in the day.

Its funny because when i first played Morrowind in 2003 i didn't like it and even uninstalled it after an hour. Then one boring weekend came and i gave it another chance and couldn't believe i never gave it a proper chance even if it was only a few weeks before.

But to answer the question, yes i am hoping its more like Morrowind. To me Morrowind felt like a PC game where as Oblivion felt like a Console game.

But i shall not lie i did enjoy Oblivion.
