No.

I role play a sadistic mass murderer, doesn't mean I'm one in real life.

Really, it's just a simple disease called kleptophilia. As long as you cure it within three working days by kissing the Lucky Lady you should be fine. Persistent cases may require a visit to Divine Elegance to purchase a pair of 'goody shoes'. Talk to one of the beggars if you need more info.

If you work at it, you can get a special hat, and blame it all on somebody else. Robin Hood had a special hat. Zorro had a special hat. Al Capone had a..wait a minute, what were we talking about?

No. pretty cut & dry... I roleplay because I wanna become somebody else. Somebody who doesn't shop at Whole Foods and pay all her bills on time.

I'd say it's a matter of perception.

Some people would state that the thieves are those who are part of the system, collecting taxes from people who don't have enough to eat, clothes, etc, and generally think of themselves before thinking of others.

I'm going to be blunt so forgive me, but despite what your profile says, I don't think you're mature enough to really be on these forums. Everything you post reminds me of my 9 year old brother.

People want thieves dead? That's ridiculous. There's no death penalty for thievery, no matter how large. Would you call the Gray Fox and his followers evil? Would you want Robin Hood to be dead?

This just strikes me as a very immature topic from someone who has not taken the time to actually consider morality for themselves.

Now, now... let's remember that the Imperial guards and various merchants DO want the Grey Fox and his followers dead. Also, many business people consider Robin Hood to be the source of evil, or something similar.

During medieval times, the penalties for thievery were considerably harsher than today. Losing a hand might be for first offense. Losing your life might be the second.

I understand your concerns, but the original post has some validity both ingame and in history.

He wasn't talking in-game, he was talking real life in the present, but I'd also consider many of the viewpoints of people in history to be immature and not thought-out as well.

To answer the question posted in the the thread title: perhaps. It depends. You can't really judge a person based on the type of character they play. Take me, for example. I play a wide variety of character types. Does that mean I'm good when playing as a noble warrior, but suddenly turn evil when I'm a sneaky thief or assassin?

No, they don't. In real life, people don't call everybody who has some aspect of thief skills, "thieves."

Some are called servants of the people, by stealing information from government sources and releasing it to the public. Some are called victims of harsh, repressive societies, trying to live and keep a family alive through grey economies. Some are called lockpick merchants; others, bankers. Some are called thieves, and some, thugs. Some are villified and praised at the same time.

My point? Perhaps you should consider not thinking of the world in D&D terms. "Thief" can mean a lot more than somebody dressed like they were fresh from some Rennfaire stealing money. Think in terms of thievish skills, and how one or two can be envisioned in a fully-developed character. With a bit of thought it's pretty obvious that there are dozens of ways to work this out.

so are people who role play as one considered the same ?

No. If they do it well, they're considered good roleplayers. If they do it poorly, in a way that makes it clear they're "roleplaying" to cover for personal greed, they're considered mod-bait.

In my opinion, you play what you would like to experience without the consequences. At least, that's what I do.

My friend exclaimed, "wow you're a sadist!" the other day when I was showing him my character. Why did he say this? My character murdered a beggar, arranged her body in a respectful way and dropped a lettuce on her chest in place of flowers. I roleplay a fairly evil character. Does my friend think I'm a sadist in real life? Of course not. That's the whole reason for roleplay. You try out things that you wouldn't do in real life.
Ever been on a rampage in the Imperial City? Of course you probably have, and even if you haven't you've thought about it. But you wouldn't start whacking people with a sword in your local town.

Ha! I do the same thing with a body. My character strips them to their underwear, and places a Deadra Heart on their chest. Well...not the same, but close enough...

@ OP : It's not that I'm a bad person. Just a person with bad thoughts. HeHeHe...

I've roleplayed Thieves, Murderers, Necromancers, Courtesans, Corrupt Politicians (admittedly not in this game), Pirates, etc. I do this because, like others have said, I want a break from my boring normal life.

Similarly, I'm nowhere near as good a person as my Healer, Helena Aurelie is. She'll see someone in need and drop everything to help them. Whereas I'd carry on with the task I'm on.

I roleplay as an assassin. True, my assassin is a person who kills based on Nocturnal's orders and people who oppress other people. Such as Alessia Ottus who's a racist and a fundamentalist. Racists are probably in my top ten most hated people in real life. Really, the only reason I hate Orcs as a player is simply because they look like somebody drove a truck over their faces and splashed green paint on them.

So really, I roleplay because I can escape my boring world of routine studies.

If we wanted to be thieves in real life, we'd do it in real life, not play a game where we can do it. ;)
