Are the buzzards back?

Post » Tue Nov 09, 2010 4:59 pm

Actually it's just a model with animation that's placed high up in the air to present the appearance that its up in the sky, its not scripted. I agree it's one of those really nice effects in Fallout3 that adds alot to immersion, and it was in the Fallout3 master file. My GECKulation is that it get put into New Vegas, either directly (as it was in Fallout 3) or modified, but the effect was too-good for it to have been omitted IMHO.

Thats what I was hoping for, too (I hope your avatar eats cats any chance it gets).

I think the reason the Domestic cats are gone is the same reason the Cats that try to S**T in my backyard are endangered -> My Dogs kills them, She and He kills at least 1-2 Cats a Month back there and that is just IN MY BACKYARD <- Cats would not survive worth a damn because they are Food with very few hiding spots available that their predators can not also get to them, hell I can think of no less then 5 different Predators that reside just around where I live that eat cats and I do mean eat and not WOULD EAT at the end of the world because they get munched on quite often around here.

Just so you know my Dogs are a Black Lab/Pit Bull mix so she is faster the any Domestic Cat and with the Lab instincts and Pit Bull tenacity old Puddy does not stand a chance of getting away and a Pit Bull he can not jump my back yard fence but hes mean as hell ! they are Zoi and Tyr (do a little research to find out why its so damn funny that these two uses cats a chewing toys).

I have watched her jump over my 7 Foot fence into my Neighbors yard kill the offending puddy and jump back over to our yard with the dead cat to play with her food !

I have also seen cats trying to get away not make it over my Fence and after they hit the fence fall back down into my Dogs mouths.

Just saying I think only the Big Cats would survive short term and only as long as it takes Dogs to return to their Pack behavior and then it would turn out bad for all Cats, a properly trained pack of Dogs can drop anything ! and a Big Cat is just dinner for everyone. :)

@SaidenStorm

I think you have it exactly correct, cute and cuddly as the cats are, they just would not have lasted 200+ years.

There needs to be some eagles or hawks in giant form that can attack you from the sky and have nests in high places that you can find full of bones or random junk >_>

IMO bad idea, check out morrowind's cliffracers for example, very aggitating. but maybe since they've progressed much more than from back then that they could pull it off. But I wouldn't like it.

Don't get me wrong, cats are great (fertilizer, best palm tree I have); I just have to agree that because they are loaners by nature, they would never survive a pack of dogs in the wild, no matter if it was a domesticated feline or a mountain lion, a good pack of wild dogs would be more than enough to decimate any litter of those foul creatures (probably one of the few things Egyptians had wrong). On topic: maybe the buzzards will be back to show us where all the cats have gone...

I was thinking this should be added to Fallout 4 if it has a much better engine actually =/

Then, why there's vultures hovering over Megaton in FO3?
If it's extincted in the West Coast, it may have not been extinct in the East Coast..... Things in the East Coast must be different than in the West Coast.
Proof? Look at Megaton. You'll see some vultures hovering above the town, circling  . And Fallout 3 is a canon successor of Fallout 1, and 2. :grad:

The only one thing i hate about Fallout lore is, WHY CATS MUST BE EXTINCT IN AMERICA!! :banghead: :swear:  (In My Opinion..)
It's unfair, and every animal can adapt and survive with it's environment. Though, maybe their bigger cousins (Pumas) maybe still alive......
They didn't know any better? (and so I guess that means birds are [now] no longer extinct :()

why are cats extinct?
Cats were said to have been easy food; hunted to extinction. (This from NPC conversation in FO2)

(Why it must be named bible? I don't know  )...
The word 'bible' means 'definitive text'. (it also means 'book')

Its use is http://www.amazon.com/HTML-Bible-CD-ROM-Bryan-Pfaffenberger/dp/0764534734/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1286333632&sr=8-2.

I remember in Vault City and several desert areas bird noises. In Vault City you hear that 'tweet tweet' noise. And in desert cells in F1 and F2, sometimes you could hear that carion 'caw' sounds. So technically the old Fallouts screwed up too.

So do I. (and I also remember reading questions [years ago] like, "so where did those bird sounds come from" ~[I think] it was a mistake.)

**I do know that you don't see any birds, but you do see rats and insects. Adding birds would not have been a problem.
(the engine supported rocket sprites flying across the screen, after all.)

Though some NPC's thought wanamingo's were aliens when in fact they weren't. I think this ads to the beauty of Fallout that people perceive the world in the their own small frame of reference. (poor wording)

I see what you mean, but I do not think that is the case here.

No way on attacking birds people did any of you play morrowind, I hated the damn attacking birds in that game so annoying and they always attacked at the worst times while trying to sneak past some other danger or while fighting some terrible foe, they were just too much too often lol.

Clondors

Condors whos eyes are all on the right side. Play on words with Condor and Flounder.

This is why they always go in the same clockwise circle formation around dying prey.

Yeah, there is some sort of bird that circles the lighthouse in point lookout aswell, i assumed it was a seagull, but i've never been sure. I AM however, 100% sure that it only has ONE head, as it gets fairly close to the PC if you take the time to climb to the very top of the light house.

Some food for thought for those individuals that seem to think cats (especially the larger, wild variety) would not survive on the premise that roaming packs of wild dogs would somehow wipe them out: There are plenty of cats living (and quite well) in Africa despite all the packs of hyenas around, which have not managed to extinguish them out in the thousands of years they've been co-existing. I'm not here to stand as the resident feline advocate or anything but really you should think things through a little more thoroughly before saying them. That is all.

If cats are extinct "because they were easy food", why aren't dogs? They're even more domesticated to humans than cats. They'd be even easier to kill for food. http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Dogmeat

Cats were domesticated because they made effective vermin killers for food stores in early human population centers. If it's smaller than them, cats will try to kill it. Unless dogs somehow de-domesticated back to a predatory state, then who's doing the vermin-killing in post-apocalyptia?

why are cats extinct? Well, according to a "Life After People" show I saw, cats would multiply like nobodies business. Basically everywhere you turn there would be a wildcat. They would be like radroaches, every corner of every freeking place you went to. Which is both hard to program and would pee off players. So easier to say they are extinct, and not need to deal.

Although - no reason cats couldn't repopulate. Moriarty wasn't born in the Wasteland. I read a log that said "done well for himself since he CAME TO THIS COUNTRY". So obviously, at some point in the last 60 years a boat has arrived on the Eastcoast from Ireland. Why couldn't it have cats onboard? Rats? Mice? etc

I smell a Fallout prequel, or a return on the boat/plane....
Or maybe Moriarty was on the plane that was Megaton?

If you ever see a crazed or wild rottweiler or any other type of dog around the same size, you would find them pretty deadly...
cats on the other hand are smaller and usually just run away therefore they are less dangerous and would be more hunted than dogs
sides we also have coyotes and wolves which are related to dogs, so if they survive dogs might as well too...
