Are the chimer gone forever?

Post » Tue Feb 01, 2011 3:04 pm

Now with the tribunal gone should'nt the dunmer be rid of their cursed appearance and look like before they were changed by azura couldnt she change them back or is it that the dunmer dont want to be changed i wonder.

Considering that Oblivion is set quite some time after Dagoth Ur's defeat and he Tribunal's downfall, it seems obvious Aura didn't bother reversing her curse.

Since according to the lore Vivec wasn't killed by he Nerevarine, maybe she considered there was still soem work to be done. Or just considered the dunmers wer fine as they were.

These curses don't seem to be of a reversible type. I mean, Boethiah ate Trinimac, and all of Trinimac's mer followers turned into Orsimer. That was ages and ages and ages ago. I don't think Boethiah really cares...

Similarly, I don't think Azura really cares overmuch. I mean, none of the Dunmer really seem to hate Azura - she's regarded as a Good Daedra and the anticipation of Sotha Sil. The Tribunal could have spread slander about her, but it seems that, for whatever reason, they didn't overtly malign her. And I recall reading somewhere (I could be mistaken) that the Dunmer were proud of their appearance??? i could be confusing this with something else...

In the http://www.imperial-library.info/obscure_text/nu-hatta_nu-mantia.shtml, there is a passage which hints that some Chimer split from the Velothi before the Battle of Red Mountain and thus remained Chimer:

"Gypsy Moth dustmemore insert - it should be noted here that it is always foolish to think of whole races sharing like minds. "Ayleid" is as much a metaphysical designation as it is a cultural one. Just like the earliest Chimer who orphaned themselves from the Velothi Exodites, but remain Chimer today, large numbers of Ayleids showed more interest in the immediate earthly needs of agriculture rather than the magical needs of concept-farming. This distinction becomes important later, when "Ayleid" begins to designate other, and ofttimes foreign, agencies."

I somehow doubt they'd really want to look like Altmer. And Azura's curse makes them look like she did in Morrowind, which implies that she is a kinswoman. Which, to the Dunmer (who already see the Daedra as ancestors) means she is almost like a Dunmer herself. The curse is more so she remains powerful in Morrowind, not so the Dunmer remember what Vehk did.

I don't think Azura necessarily looks like a Dunmer, despite the statues. The book describing the moment when the Chimer were changed to Dunmer makes it sound as if she changed them to look "like ghouls" -- ashen skin, crimson eyes. Azura thinks of their new look as a punishment. (I don't like how "Oblivion" portrays the Dunmer -- their crimson eyes are light red now, instead of presumably filling the whole eye socket; their skin is some kind of light blue instead of gray. It's as if they've been homogenized to fit in better with the humans.)

It's possible that Azura has dusky skin to match her sphere of dusk and dawn. I guess I'm just wondering if her statue in the Cavern of the Failed Incarnates is accurate.

Not really, since the Dunmer are practically Chimer, besides they're probably too used to their current appearance by now...

And considering there is only 1 dunmer alive that would remember the chimer being turned into the dunmer, Divayth Fyr

I always thought that since Daedric Princes can take on whatever appearance they want, she just assumed a guise that fit in best with the surrounding culture and peoples - in this case, the Dunmer. Her appearance in Daggerfall is quite different - tan skin, pale hair.

Of course, Barenziah, Helseth, and Morgiah also have humanlike colorations in Daggerfall. With the exception of the PC, Dunmer in Daggerfall didn't look Dunmer.

She could probably change them back to their "true" form, but do she really care?

And I like the way they look, Morrowind style.

I had thought the Chimer were immortalized in Vehk. Just like the Dwemer into the golden skin of the Numidium. Sounds a bit flowery though, I guess.

Well, all that remains of the Chimer is present in the half of Vehk, and he's eternal now, ae altadoon and all that.

Vehk is half-and-half, but Almalexia looks full Chimer. Maybe Sotha Sil, too?

Apparently, books and such say he went dunmer, due to jumping into the volcano to save his people, while Vivec reached in to grab him, and Almalexia just stood there gasping. However, his corpse says otherwise

To be honest, I think I may have had a spell of typing before thinking. Wasn't a book, but somewhere on these boards, so...yeah. Looking for my best to find where I found this.

Skah, ignore my post till someone can find the quote I am looking for. Damn, I definitely remember something like that before
