Are the Graphics a major disappointment?

Post » Mon Jul 12, 2010 12:26 pm

Do I want dx11 and all the goodies it offers? Ofc! And I AM a bit irked that if it desnt include dx11 for PC its probably due to consoles not even able to use dx10. On the other hand I liked morrowind graphics more than oblivions so they are a step in the right direction.

I would like to say the graphics are awesome, but frankly I just don't know. Why? because I haven't seen any of the game except for the trailer.

So my question is... Could anyone link me to some pics or something? Cause I'd really like to take part in what you all are talking about.

Lets wait until GI puts up the high rez images. Most of the complainers are just looking at low rez, grainy scans.

I hope no one is complaining about graphics from the low quality scans we saw. Regardless, I think it looks great--the real-world physics and real-time shadows are going to be beautiful.

The problem is that most of us don't have anything else to go by so far.
MOAR INFO, NAOUGHW!

Also, what do we know about the physics? Can I burn a tree with a fire spell, stuff like that?

I kinda did, no results there :S

If links aren't allowed in threads, could anyone send me a pm? I'm really dying to see the new game, been a big fan since Morrowind.

Overall the graphics look superb. Natural and detailed etc. But there's one little disappointment, Skyrim doesn't seem to have much HDR lighting (High Dynamic Range lighting, which is that that intense white bright light that shines strongly on every surface in several modern games).

As you all know Oblivion is famous for having extreme amounts of HDR lighting and was also critiziced for it, but personally I love and adore HDR. I hope HDR is customizable in the PC version which I will get besides the PS3 version.

Then try harder. Links aren't allowed in PMs any more than they are here.

You guys gotta remember that the game isn't coming out for almost another year. There have been games that look better than Skyrim that have been out for years now (Crysis, RDR, Mass Effect), and more will come out in the next year. What this means is, when Skyrim hits the shelves in November 2011, it'll be one of the worst looking (graphics-wise) games out there.

How is it possible to find the graphics to be a "major dissapointment"? I don't even understand how that is possible.

There are 2 things they need to fix. No idea if they have done it or not.

Animations. lets be honest on a scale from 0 to 100 Oblivion get 20.
the characters them self. The nature look overall good however throw in 1-2 characters and the entire thing is ruined.

Judging from what I've seen so far, the characters themselves are better. There's this picture of a nord girl in a tavern and it's great. Not so cartoonish anymore. Better than any female character I've seen in Oblivion, Fallout 3 or New Vegas.

Have you seen Dragon Age 2's graphics? They are horrid and it's a linear game.

Be thankful.

I just love the people who think hardware is irrelevant and that whoever must be in charge of graphics that aren't photorealistic are incompetent. I also love the people that think they know more about professional game developers about engine use and think that Id's engine or Crytek's engine would actually work for an Elder Scrolls game. Even more, I love people that think engines are all about graphics and do nothing else or don't have to do anything other than render graphics. They're obviously correct.

I love what I've seen so far.

Well if anything else now we're sure Skyrim will run damn well on PS3 and Xbox360.

from the screens in the mag the graphics are awesome. I don't know why people would think otherwise.

As a PS3 player, I can say that I am extremely happy if that is the case. Oblivion lags far too much, for me.

The graphics are miles better than I could've imagined. This game looks already godly and I've only seen low quality scans. Can't wait to see high quality screenshots and footage.

I think the screens look amazing.

Agreed, I seriously don't get why you people are being such downers. The screens look absolutely amazing and I've only seen mag scans which look half as good as the actual magazine, plus I always think screens never really make justice to the actual game, since when playing you have movement etc...so from 1 to 10, I think they're a 9 considering this is an RPG (and usually AMZING graphics are found in FPS)

open cities, huge draw distance, actual mountains, actual snowfall, flowing streams, individually moving vegetation/tree branches, improved npc's, visual variety of dungeons/caves

I really dont understand the people who are disappointed... this is a huge upgrade. If you honestly believe that crysis graphics are possible in this type of game and will run on a 360, you are out of your mind

I think they are pretty good!

BUT I think HDR and the dynamic shadows can be improved a bit more. And by that I mean making them a bit stronger and more pronounced (But not as much as HDR was in Oblivion!!!).
By tweaking the HDR and the dynamic shadows a bit further, I think it can become one of the prettiest games out there.

Self Shadowing on everything? Including Objects? Check.

That's what they said last time, then they cut it for consoles. We'll see.

What are you smoking dude, the picture on page 49 looks as good if not better than some of the souped up versions of crysis dude. From a purely polygonal standpoint the models are just jaw dropping.

Honestly, lower picture on page 49 of the GI I CAN'T TELL A FLIPPING DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THEM AND A REAL LIFE STILL

Maybe we've been playing different mods for crysis then... I'm not saying it doesn't look good, but 1) These are really early shots that are probably bullshots in some respect, 2) I need higher resolution images before coming to any conclusions, and 3) I think you're getting caught up in the hype. True photorealism in games is still a VERY long way off. This game is going to be running on current gen consoles. That is the lowest common denominator in their development process. Even if they included ultra high res textures, high poly models, and Dx11 features for the PC version, they would still have to base their level design, true draw distances, and your ultimate freedom to explore on that 5 (coming up on 6) year old console hardware. That is the bottom line.

Agreed. I also really think Skyrim would profit a lot from tessellation.
Overall, the step from "this looks quite good" to "woah this is incredible" doesn't seem to be that huge, and we might even see this transformation once we get better screens or even videos.

Indeed. However I think that's why they waited so long to announce the game. So they wouldn't make any empty promises like last time. But we shall see...

And the graphics look amazing. That picture of the girl in the tavern, just awesome. She actually LOOKS LIKE A WOMAN. Not a womans face on a mans body.

Her face looks very real, and just look at those hips :hubbahubba:
