Are the Graphics a major disappointment?

Post » Mon Jul 12, 2010 6:10 am

As long as every object in the game casts shadows, I'll be happy.

I keep hearing that it will and it makes me wonder something...how many light sources are there? Will the PC version support more due to compute shader etc. ? And is the game using a deffered render to allow more artistic freedom for artist and allow more light sources? I hope so, this would mean AA in DX9 would be broken, not a big deal in 2011 though.

The graphics are fine, not as technically advanced as say something like the Rage engine but full of style and interest! I think most of the nay-sayers are judging it by the fact that every other entry into the series was pushed out after a major development of the hardware was available for players. Going from one of the earliest actual 3D games ever on PC with Daggerfall, to something much richer on PC and the original xbox with Morrowind. Oblivion then came out on the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC....now Skyrim is being built for the SAME platforms. The only one of those three that has changed is the PC of course.

I would say games like Skyrim will be coming closer and closer to maxing out systems like the Xbox 360, I mean I love mine but there is only so much a...what...10 year old system is capable of! You are only as strong as your weakest link in this case.

This is not a knock against consoles, I own most of them and love them. With all that said I think between the style and possibly the SIZE of the game world Skyrim might include (remember we're adding a lot vertically here with mountains!) the game will be much more superior visually in the long run.

Well one thing's for sure. I don't have burned retinas from looking at the pics. And as long as the performance is good it could look just like Oblivion for all I care.

I'd guess DX10. But Always a possibility its DX9 on PC as well. To get these visuals on console I know they are working closer to PCs DX10 than PCs DX9 so hopefully they just focus on DX10 then adding DX11 effects.

consoles have geforces 7900 so they can only do dx9

Xbox 360 has a custom build APi that is based on DX9 but has functionality closer to DX10 than that of a DX9 PC. PS3 is using modified CELL friendly version of OpenGL ES...again closer to DX10 in functionality and practicality as well as programming. DX10 though does exceed the capabilities of both consoles in support features though. For instance they totally lack the geometry shader stage of DX10. Also PS3's RSX is going to be slightly slower than a 7900...think 7800GTS or so. Xbox's Xenos is closer to 7900.
I too hope for DX11 though. At least used to the extent DX9 in Oblivion was used. Crysis runs in DX9 and looks far better than Oblivion, Oblivion didnt max out DX9 but it did use it phenomenally well. Lets hope the same for Skyrim with DX10/11

I don't care if it looks like Morrowind as long as it's got the depth to match.

Well from the crappy, grainy, piece of !&@% pictures on saw on other sites, the game looks good enough for me. Some of the armor looks pretty cool too. and anyways if i don't like something ill find a mod that fixes it...Not that it's an excuse for a crappy game but my tastes can be picky, and if i can change things i don't like i will

If crysis is the standard for amazing graphics then Skyrim is slightly better than average. Then again it could have been the resolution, regardless it's not all all a major disappointment at all. Screenshots almost never do a game justice anyway. Looking forward to HD videos!

I really wasn't expecting much graphicly and to be honest I think ot looks great. Graphics to me aren't all that important, it's gameplay that I want and I hope they deliver.

They seem nice. I'm glad they haven't switched to a pseudo-realistic look like other games have and have kept the high-fantasy look of the franchise. I'm sure the effects will look great in motion, and I believe I saw DoF and a read about dynamic lighting. If they use those post-processing effects efficiently they could 'cover up' the bad looking parts of the game. That's the key to making a good looking console game, since you can't go all out like PC games can. I'm also hoping they have PC specific graphics features.

All I've seen so far are low quality, grainy scans, so I can't really decide at the moment. However, I'd much rather have bad graphics but great gameplay, than having great graphics and bad gameplay.

Trust me hold off until tomorrow, Don't let some grainy low-res scan ruin your surprise :)

I haven't seen any of the screens for Skyrim but right now I'm playing Daggerfall and enjoying it

That tells you how important I think graphics are to enjoy a game :P

Yeah the graphics are terrible. How dare bethesda make a game this ugly.

Everyone needs to relax. Wait until you get some in game video before you make any judgments. Some of the stuff being churned out in these threads is making me kind of embarrassed. I'd hate to be one of the developers scanning through this garbage.

By the way the title of this thread is hilarious ... in a sad way.
