Are the older fallouts any good?

Hey everyone, first off fallout 3 is THE best game I have ever played.
It got me really interested in the post apocalyptic genre. I was wondering if the other 3 fallout games were any good.

I'd like to know why there great as well and if you think there better than fallout 3

Fallout 1 and 2 are great. I like them a lot more than Fallout 3, but I guess most would disagree. You have to understand that they are very different games than Fallout 3. For instance there is isometric view instead of first person, turn-based combat and the impact of SPECIAL and skills is much greater than in Fallout 3.

I agree With you They are awesome Games, If you like the post apocalyptic Wasteland feel of fallout 3 then you will LOVE the post apocalyptic feel of the first 2 games. Try Tactics as well. Playing them will help you better understand the fallout universe way better then reading about it on wikipedia.

I'm rather partial to Fallout 1 and 2; but they're not the sort of games that I'd unanimously and without reservation recommend to anyone and everyone, either. Kind of in the same way that not everyone who enjoyed Fallout 1 was pleased as punch with Fallout 3; just because you liked Fallout 3 doesn't mean that you're going to get any real enjoyment out of the older games, either.

Because they are very different sorts of RPGs, with different goals in mind. If you've played other overhead turn-based games, or think that might be something you can enjoy - then yeah, you'd probably like Fallout 1, 2, and Tactics. But if you're going in looking for something similiar to Fallout 3, then you're probably going to be dissapointed.

On the other hand, I believe you can find them for pretty cheap these days, so even if they do leave you dissapointed; at least it won't have set you back more than a couple of bucks to find out...

GOG.com sells them cheap with no DRM.

Fallout is IMO the best game in the series, while FO2 has the UI fixes that FO1 really needed, and is bigger (which is cool).
Fallout 3 really does a fantastic (unmatched?) rendition of the environment (wasteland, wreckage, and the ruin); The Ghouls look great, and wandering the out-lands really gives the right feeling ~not so much in town though.

Opinions vary, but mine is that while I like all three (FO1, 2, & 3), only Fallout 1 & 2 are indicative of the series... FO3 derives from the setting only, and changes the focus of play and the game mechanics.

Are the old Fallouts' any good?....
They are the reason I bought Fallout 3 , I think they are pretty good.

Maybe im being biased here, since i play fallout 1 and 2 first, but in my opinion they are better in alot of aspects. The cities had alot more "life", the dialogs were interesting, there was a good balance between the ghouls and super mutants that were your enemies, and those that you could interact in other ways.
I like the 3rd/1st person view in fallout 3, and that makes a good combat system, but i think that instead of VATS, they should replaced, with something like the fallout 1 and 2 combat system. where we use points to use almost every action. Oh and one more thing, in Fallout 3 they could have made an interesting story, and Bigger towns with more side quests

I don't know about Tactics, but 1 and 2 are way way better than 3.
