Are the Unofficial Fallout 3 Patches a good idea or not?

Post » Fri Feb 18, 2011 10:56 pm

Title says it all really.

In Oblivion, the Unofficial Patches are absolutely essential, so when I installed FO3 they were the first thing to be added after the DLCs.

Since then, I've read a few posts on various threads giving the impression that they can cause problems. I know Quarn isn't updating them any more, but surely an incomplete fix is better than none at all?

Isn't it? :sadvaultboy:

So should I keep them?

Thanks
TLS

I know I couldv'e asked this in one of the topics where the statement was made, but I hate hijacking other peoples topics!

I personally do not use them - I find they are not very much use if you have a long modlist like mine (over 120 mods) and could cause crashes from time to time... but I may VERY WELL be wrong about not using them :)

They seem to be less essential and more prone to issues than the Oblivion one.

I'm currently not using it, and I haven't noticed any serious issues. Just the Head of State quest that is a bit buggy in vanilla. Also sometimes there are some objects floating a bit above the ground but it's not a big deal.

It is the Broken Steel unofficial patch that gives Fallout 3's unofficial patch a bad name, and there's a fixed version of that too somewhere, not in the package last i used it. So to be safe, don't use the BS patch, the rest are safe.

I haven't tried it yet but I think this is where it is linked...

I've been using the Unofficial patches just because I was so used to using them for Oblivion, after already installing them I've heard some negative things about them but I haven't run into any problems while using them (I do have the updated Broken Steel one). Unfortunately I've never played the game before using them so I can't really say what benefit they add either honestly, other than fixing some things like adding the Burnmaster to Pyromaniac.

Oh and Head of State was still buggy when I did it, Hannibal just stood there and never walked to where he was supposed to so I had to use console commands to advance the quest.

I'd been using it since JustinOther made it...at least, I think he made that fixed esp. It wasn't hosted on Nexus, not an official release, or anything. Just something he did up in a couple of minutes for those of us with Rivet City issues.

I've always used the UF3P, but recently for my latest character have had it completely disabled. I get the same amount of crashes as if I was still using it, so I don't really know if it causes most of the problems. I haven't noticed a difference, other than the odd floating tree/bush/rock or strange bottomless pit under a pile of rubble.
I know why Quarn couldn't continue with it (well, heard from other people) and it's understandable that he hasn't been back (as far as I know) to continue working on it. I used it in Oblivion and as it was updated frequently I never had issues. Because this version is now outdated and unfinished it's bound to cause issues. Maybe not for everyone, but some people I guess.

I see FWE has dropped the UF3P support plugin. I don't really know what its purpose was, anyway. A bit over my head, I think.
Recently I read a post (by someone I always take notice of) suggesting not to use it. I'd seen him say it over and over but only now just decided to stop using it, myself. I hadn't had issues caused by it, but as it's outdated and I'm trying to make my load order smaller it was one mod that I could 'let go.' :)

To explain :)
We dropped the support file because it just wasn't needed anymore for compatbility. FWE works with UF3P just as well as it did before, you just dont need that little file anymore.
We did however include some of UF3Ps critical fixes in FWE (like the time bug), incase people don't feel like installing UF3P.

Thanks for all the input everyone, I really appreciate it.

As my mod list currently stands at just the DLCs, DUI3, CASM and Megaton House Overhaul (over a week now playing mostly vanilla but the urge to go on a DL frenzy is hard to resist!) I guess I'll keep the patches but bear them in mind as the first things to bin if my game starts to get glitchy.

Special thanks to alt3rn1ty for the linky to the fixed BS patch :icecream:

I often had ALOT more problems from using the Unoffical patch than without.... really I can live with the occasional patch of rocks that're transparent to offscreen hell on oneside if it means less crashes...

Glad you popped in, - I have been studying FWE and think it will be next to be added to my install/load order - Going to keep the small file for the family setup on a different machine which will not have FWE, well for now anyway. At least until I have checked it out and decide whether it makes game aspects too harsh for other users. I like community built overhauls which improve on vanilla but from experience with T.I.E on Oblivion I am in the minority. Anyway, nice tip, thank you.

I have been using the small patch for a day now, so far no problems. Even though I am relatively new to Fallout3 I cant say I have found any problems using UF3P, could be the case as with Oblivion so long as your load order is sorted properly with BOSS-F and you use a merged bashed patch generated by GaryBash.. most if not all problems modding the game are resolved.
