So... are there actually any Dragons in Skyrim?

Post » Mon Dec 12, 2011 11:20 pm

I'm at level 20 now and except for the dragon that disrupted my be-heading at the beginning of the game I haven't seen
a single dragon. Is there some lever I'm supposed to pull, or cave I need to visit, or mountain to climb before they'll come?
I've wandered to all the large cities and finished several misc. quests. Help!

You need to complete the Main-questline quest after Bleak Falls Barrow to get random dragons, I think.

Yup. If you're not moving forward on the main quest, you're not going to see any Dragons until you do. Chop-chop!

Lv and not seen a dragon? That is weird as by lv 20 i felt i got attacked so much it was just getting boring. Maybe you have to progress the MQ a bite to somehow unlock or increase the randomness of the attacks.

As the person above me said, you need to complete the quest "Bleak Falls Barrow" and one more after that one (if I recall correctly).

Spoiler
Go to Whiterun, talk to the Jarl and do his little military excursion quest. You'll kill a Dragon and after that they will spawn whether you progress the MQ or not.

This..

A lot of people miss this as being one of your first quests and head right to Whiterun. I notice several spots along the questline where I quit seeing Dragons and then after a main mission or two they are back.

Exactly. Talk to the court mage in Whiterun, who will direct you to find the Dragon Stone in Bleak Falls Barrow. When you return you'll end up fighting your first dragon, and after that the more steps you complete on the main quest the more dragons there will be. I've completed the first 7 quests of the MQ, and I get enough random dragon encounters to keep things interesting.

I briefly started what I believe to be the MQ, which involves Bleak Falls, but then stopped because I wanted to just venture around. So your saying if you
don't play the Main Quest you won't see any dragons? Thanks

That has been my experience, I plat'd the game and all during it, there were times when I was misc questing that I quit seeing dragons, then after a couple story quests they came back round. Not sure what points along the way though.

That's correct, dudeman. The whole 'dragons reappearing' phenomenon is directly associated with the main quest storyline and without it, they are actually not really relevant to the rest of the game world.

As the other posters said, once you complete the early quest to help defend Whiterun from the attacking dragon, you will start to experience random dragon encounters, and the higher your level, the more you'll have (so low leveled characters will not have many at first).
