Are there proper dungeons in daggerfall?

Post » Fri May 21, 2010 7:08 am

The opening dungeon made me think this game was going to be awesome. But I haven't found any other dungeons. When I search for them on the map all I find is little tombs.

Do people have to point them out to you? Or do you have to wander into them in the wilderness? The ones I've fast-travelled to are tiny. Maybe I'm clicking on the wrong-colour dot.

When you're told to go to a specific dungeon in a quest, you will automatically get it marked on the fast-travel map so you can get there easily. So just go to Mages Guild and ask for quests or something.

There's also a cheat so you will get all the locations right away, although I fail at the moment to remember how to do it.

Does anybody wander in this game? One of my favourite things to do in Morrowind and Oblivion is to wander around the wilderness and exlplore, and it seems like it wouldn't be as much fun in Daggerfall.

The wilderness in Daggerfall is huge (Daggerfall is 2x the side of Great Britain). Also, Daggerfall has no dungeons. ;)

It's pretty pointless to wander around in the game. The wilderness doesn't really offer anything, it's just huge distances of nothing except some occasional bear or something.

You might stumble upon some witches if you're lucky, or some dungeon but that's extremly slim.

Yeah that's basically the impression that I got. It's sort of a shame, since I like exploring. But I guess that's ok. Is it possible to walk across the whole game?

Yup, as long as you can spare two weeks of your life in real-time ;) Someone once tried it by placing a weight on the forward arrow key, and according to legend it took them two weeks to get from one end to the other.

That's hilarious. I think the word legend is probably very fitting.

Yea, those 'dungeons' you have marked on your map are really just cemeteries. Proper dungeons are found by taking quests. You can also find dungeon maps as loot.

:>

I am very interested in hearing your thoughts on DF dungeons after you have played more of the larger ones, especially ones involved in the main quest.

Cheating to reveal all map locations:
I assume you've installed patch 213. Read the documentation with that, modify your Z.cfg file to include the line "cheatmode 1" (no quotes).
Then in-game press CTRL-F1. This will not work if you have this key combo mapped to do something else in DOSBox (if you're using it). I remember needing to change some of the default DOSBox key bindings to be able to use all of the cheat keys.

I bet it would only take a week and a half if you put a weight on the "run" key as well.

Would like to add that you can find dungeon maps in cemeteries, if you are lucky.

well i have stumbled across the occational dungeon out in the wilds, but as Freddo said, its a very slim chance you find one that way, if you dont criss-ross the whole map with the speed cheat, that is.

maps can sometimes be found on enemies encountered in protection quests.

The Thieves Guild gives you a complimentary dungeon map when you join, and I think every 3 rank advancements or so you get another.

Yes, but it seems kind of unneccessary because every other quest they have also gives you a new dungeon. But then again, sometimes its nice to explore a dungeon without being timed...

Lol, my style is enter the dungeon, get the mission the [censored] done, and get the hell out. I don't exactly take my sweet time in dungeons.

How much real time does it take most of you to find the quest objects in a large size dungeon?

I'm pretty thorough, so it takes me a while. I try to scour the entire block before I move on to another, so my times usually range from 30 min to 2 or 3 hours or more. I think my longest was 5 or 6 hours before I finally found whatever I was looking for, but that's rare. I usually give up before then anyhow.

Sometimes I shake things up a bit by entering a dungeon and immediately using the cheat to warp to the quest item, and then I fight my way out (no recall). At least that way I have a general idea of where to go!

It takes me anything from 10 minutes to about 3 hours, If I can't find what I'm looking for after around 3 hours I tend to give up. I've noticed a lot of dungeons have the quest object somewhere near the entrance, but not always on the same level, so I tend to thoroughly check around near the entrances on all the levels with the map.
The best part is getting back out :ahhh: my current character hasn't got enough spell points for recall, but I've learned the map is a great tool and its getting easier and easier to find my way back out the more I do it.

1-3 hours is about how long I spend in larger dungeons too. Large underwater areas quickly put me off further exploration and are the main reason I'll quit looking.

I've started playing again recently, and this is the first time I've used the map properly. It's starting to become useful instead of the nightmare I found it to be in the past. Previously, I'd teleport out after completion.

I've managed the (kill the (giants or harpies)) in short order because they respawn every time you rest, but I've also spent the better part of an entire realtime day in one dungeon. If you want to get into every single cell, it can be a serious adventure.
