Well, there's excuses for things such as this, then there are reasons... It's tough to say which is which if everything is all Hush-Hush. But IMO I'd have to say that they spent the first couple of years, or at least the first year working on the XP's, Shivering Isles and Knights of the Nine. I have to say that Shivering Isles was beyond what I expected, but then Knights of the Nine was far more of a disappointment than I would have ever expected from Bethesda. (Although the fight in the sky was pretty awesome)
So, assuming that took two years *doubtful*, then I'd say in the last three years they've definitely worked something out, so they're probably working on a new TES, whether it be V or not. (ofcourse i hope like hell it is NOT a MMO). That said, for some unsung reason, game developers seem to want their developed games to remain secret until just before release day.. There's several "reasons" for this. First, all the forum trolls asking super-annoying questions, Then you have to consider the games integrity - meaning that they don't want outside sources having influence on their game before it's ever released. Of course, they don't want other game developers to see too much of their work, then beat them to the punch before they complete the game. (take E32010 for instance - it seems that there were about 30+ fps games announced, and only about 3 rpg's.. How Depressing Is That? It's because fps is pretty basic, not much to steal, but rpg's have storyline, combat engines, graphic design, theme and character design to worry about, if any other developer gets their hands on it before Bethesda finishes the game, they can completely rip them off and ruin TESV before we get a chance to enjoy it.
I'll admit it, TESV was one of the few games that I actually hoped to see announced, but I never actually expected that they would announce it at FPS-expo ( my newly dubbed name for E3 ). Besides, E3 quit being a fan-based audience a long time ago, its all developers and press people. Then they let G4 cover the whole expo, so there's no way they'd let it be announced there.. with that [censored]-bag Sessler asking "when can we buy it?" every three minutes.
My only unanswered question is really just why they dont delegate TES it's own development team apart separate from other Bethesda games, like Fallout etc. No offense to fallout, but it's never gonna be TES... Ever.
All that said, we all know that The Elder Scrolls is Bethesda's best game series, and it will be for years to come, even if they don't put out another. So they'd be semi-retarded to put it off for much longer, and semi-retarded is not a word that I associate with Bethesda. After all, in my own list of game developers, Bethesda is above everyone else, and since SquareEnix still exists, that's saying a lot.
My vote was obviously Yes, I'm annoyed that there was now TESV announcement at E32010, but since I never expected it, I'm not going to hold it against them.. Personally, I would never announce a game there. I wouldn't have announced Fallout: New Vegas either, but they did that, probably just to quiet some of the anger that there was no TESV announcement... but then Fallout is essentially a open-ended, free-roam version of a FPS anyway, which is why I'm not a huge fan. I played 3, but I just couldn't get into it.. once that one guy teleported way the hell out there, forcing me to clip through a wall and anger him to run him back to the citadel, I totally lost interest.. yeah it's a glitch, and all Bethesda games have glitches.. remember the Umbra/Clavicus Vile Mission in oblivion, and how it was impossible to complete on the original release version? How annoying.
