Are you buying/building a new rig for TES:V?

The thought of doing high performance gaming on a laptop still makes me shudder. Am I just old fashioned?

That's the way of the future my friend, people want portability :P It also helps when I spend most of my time in the living area looking after my little girl, I can set up and play wherever I want :) These days you can get some pretty nice laptops with big screens, OR just plug it into your Widescreen TV and off you go! My desktop is still ok, it can run Crysis on very high settings so it should be ok for Skyrim, although I don't get down that part of the house to play it very often anymore, then I have a PS3 too!

Why a laptop when I can hook up my PC to a nice 40 inch HDTV running Skyrim at MAX settings?

Coz it is easier to settup than a PC desktop, I hate having to lug my box, keyboard, mouse down to my loungeroom, I just don't have the room either, then you factor in the fact I have a 1 and a half year old girl that just LOVES to play with stuff, press buttons etc... lol With a powerful laptop it is much easier, then I can play on my 52 inch Sony Bravia 1080p LCD screen with max settings :) I have a PS3 to check out too, I am guessing a powerful PC will run it much better though.

As much as I wish I could get a new computer, I'm having a really hard time justifying the expenditure of $1000 for a rig that will run Skyrim decently (I'm assuming that the graphics settings will be higher than FNV and my current rig could only play that on medium settings). So I've instead decided to purchase an xbox 360 to play Skyrim. I've been wanting to play Red Dead Redemption anyway so this just gives me another reason to finally dive into console land.

You can get a much more powerful desktop for a much lower price.

You can get a Core-i7 3.0GHZ, 8GB RAM, Geforce 580GTX, 1TB HDD, BluRay Burner, and a new case For under $1500. The same specs for a laptop costs more than $3000.

Which takes me back to the point I made about portability! Of course it is alot more expensive, they are having to cram ALOT of high powered hardware into a small area! Not only that but it must be able to handle the heat output and be ergonomically superior! I love the fact I can just pick it up move to another room and play! My desktop still has its place I just don't get down that part of the house to play it much anymore :(

I've been holding off for Sandy Bridge, but Skyrim will serve as a handy excuse to spend money on a new toy.

$1000? I've just build a PC that should run it decently for under half that, *and* I live in the UK, where components tend to be more expensive.

No, for a few reasons:
1. I already have spent about $1200-$1300 on this build, starting back in June. It should be fine. If there are any changes, they will be because I come across some money (hopefully I'm employed) and I want to get an upgrade for the hell of it.
2. Though we don't have the specs yet, I doubt that it will be too strenuous on average systems, and mine is well above average. :P

That said, my build:
Case: Cooler Master HAF 932
Mobo: Asus Crosshair IV Formula
PSU: Antec TruePower New 750W
CPU: AMD Phenom II x4 955 @3.2GHz
RAM: 8GB DDR3-1600 (Hopefully it'll use 4GB by default)
GPU: XFX AMD Radeon HD6870 1GB GDDR5
CPU Cooler: ThermalTake SpinQ VT

Oh, and red LEDs. Lots of red LEDs. I NEED MOAR LEDs!

$1000? I've just build a PC that should run it decently for under half that, *and* I live in the UK, where components tend to be more expensive.

I just planned out a decent one for a friend that will cost around $550, and that was only because it turned out that we had more to work with than we expected before... The budget was sitting around $300 at first, which I also could have worked with. So yeah, a DECENT computer will run you $5-600, but a good one will run probably closer to $800, and a kick ass one at least $1000.

I think my E7400, 4gigs of ram and GTX 460 will run the game just fine.

I think my current rig would probably be able to run it pretty well, but i'm still really tempted to build a new one, or at least upgrade to optimise it.
It really depends on the system requirements, and how much money I have around that time. :P

I am always tempted to build a new box, but I think my current rig will be alright for it. Who knows though . . . that is if the CPU holds up to the overclock for that long, it's been OC'd for almost 3 years now.

C2D E8400 @ 4.0Ghz
8GB DDR2 @ 1068Mhz
1kW Antec Quattro PSU
Radeon 5850 1GB - primary gfx card
nVidia 8800GTS 512 - physx gfx card

I might add a SSD to the mix to see how much faster load times are than my 500GB 7200RPM.

I definitely would if I didn't already build an awesome PC a few months ago. I run any game on the market and max Crysis with a good 50-60 FPS depending on how much is happening, so I think I'm good.

It really depends on my financial situation. I will if I can, but I'm thinking I will not be able to.

The choke point might be my graphics card, which is a Geforce 8800GT. If that's the case, I'll just buy the game after I upgrade (and I will not upgrade just for a single game).

I use a PC
it is not a new super computer (P4 3.2ghz. 2G RAM. 9800GT 1G.)
It plays Oblivion beautifully and smoothly.

Are xbox 360s and PS3s better than your new super computers? (mods excluded).

Are these consoles expected to perform superbly for Skyrim?

No, but I ought to upgrade my current one. Needs more RAM and a better graphics card.

My dad bought me a new computer for Christmas:

Haf 932 tower (With 5 fans)
1000 watt power supply
Sabertooth X58 motherboard
i7 950 @3.07 gHz
6 GB DDR3 RAM
NVidia Geforce GTX 465
1 TB Caviar Black Hard Drive

My mom bought me a new 23" flat screen monitor (Quite an upgrade from an 11.5" HUGE Monitor)

Probably the most expensive gift I have ever, or will ever receive.

The nice thing about consoles is developers know exactly what hardware it has, and therefore the limitations of the hardware. For instance, I know that the xbox 360 has a tri-core processor with three hardware threads and three software threads, 512 MBs of ram, sheared with the GPU, in which 32 MBs is already taken by the OS, and it has an ATI GPU so it will behave similar to other ATI cards. For the most part this hasn't changed, so developing on specific hardware will let developers know for sure about performance issues and such. PC games on the other hand have always been more sloppy with performance because the developer doesn't know the exact hardware every end-user will have.

Just for the record, I am still buying it on PC.

Atm:
Core i5-750 @ 3.6 GHz
2*2 GB @ 2040 MHz
ATi 5850 (6950 6970 soon :celebrate: )

Before Skyrim I'm upping CPU to either Bulldozer or Sandy Bridge, whichever has the best bang for the buck & temperature OC-wise, and doubling my ram and getting an ssd. Should be enough for mediocre settings.
