Are you buying/building a new rig for TES:V?

Post » Sun Sep 26, 2010 6:21 am

I was thinking about getting my first "gaming PC" recently. I found one that's apparently the #1 gaming PC in the world and it's only about $2000. Now, of course you can upgrade it more and jack the price up, but with 16-32 GB of RAM, i7 980x dual core processors, and the highest end nVidia card available, I don't see any need to upgrade!

I just built a new computer for myself about 6 months ago. For the most part my hardware is still top of the line, the only thing new that beats it is Nvidia's new 500 series GPU that slightly out preforms my Nvidia 460 GTX card from PNY. I just hope that the PC version of this game will take advantage of my six cores and 12 threads. Also I hope the PC version has some 64bit implementation so I can use more than 3 GBs of RAM.

I've had my current sixbox for about four years now, with the minor upgrade or two along the way. And after my recent hard drive issues (just flipped over and died. >.<) I've had to make due with a 40gig hard drive (I have to keep my Oblivion mod archive on my laptop. It literally tips 20gigs.).

In light of this computer's long and faithful service, I'm completely abandoning it in favour of building a whole new computer. I've got http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=6701580&CatId=3669 lined up for my future gaming enjoyment. In total I plan to be spending about 700 dollars. I've got a pretty good feeling it should last me another four years, as sixbox 2.0.

:EDIT: I also wish to point out to anyone buying a gaming computer - a vast majority of what it costs is basically just for the name and labour, not the parts.

The i7 980x is what I have, but its not a dual core processor. It has six cores and twelve threads. It would be interesting if what you meant to say was you had two of them on your board, but judging from the price I highly doubt it. Anyways sounds like your set, happy playing Skyrim.

Well, my current desktop was built specifically to run Oblivion just months before it came out, I think it would be fitting to build my next one specifically for Skyrim. Current one isn't really up to par any more anyway.

No, I'm getting it for my PS3 because I consider gaming computers to much work.

I'll be going to university in about a year and a half. One thing I'll really need while I'm there is a reliable laptop for my work. What I want, though, is a badass gaming PC. I will have been saving for a long time by the time I get there, so depending on what job I can hold down in my spare time, how much free time I have for gaming and how big the difference is between PC and console gaming by then I'll be looking to build my first high end gaming PC.

But no, not for Skyrim :P

But in this case all that hard work really pays off.

What a ridiculous idea. It just so happens that well, around the time of Oblivion, I needed a new computer, the old one being made of bits and pieces, and I, hum, had it built powerful enough so it would not need be upgraded for a long time, and well, Oblivion's been quite a while ago right ? Hem.

I am fairly sure my rig will run Skyrim without any problems so I'm not getting one for me. My hubby's PC wouldn't run Oblivion and thus he played on Xbox 260 and that has now taken a beating and died so I am pretty sure we will be getting a new Xbox 360 next Oct. with part of our Alaska dividends that come out in Oct. Lucky timing I guess.

I'm currently saving up for a new rig as my Daedric Machine is ready to face the voids of Oblivion... Well, I'll keep it for older games and internet; but I want to be able to play Skyrim on Ultra High+ settings instead of stuttering my way through loading screens. ;)

I just hope they'll implement DX10/11 features, proper multi-core support and 64bit. :)

No, I believe that my current rig with an OC'd i7, 6Gb Ram, 4890 2Gb, etc.. should run a game that also comes out for consoles.

But I might replace that ancient(albeit powerful) GPU if my financial situation allows it during the coming months.

I'm thinking of adding another four gigs of ram, and possibly upgrading my GeForce 9800 GT to something beefier. I also want a new processor. How much of that I manage to actually afford is yet to be seen.

I expect to have a new CPU and motherboard (mainboard) by the time TESV comes out.

Nah I'm pretty good, might get an extra 2 gigs of ram (and finally upgrade from XP to Win7 if DX10/11/whatever makes a difference)

Well it's running on the same console hardware so I don't expect the requirements will be going up at all. Right now I'm sitting on an i7 system with a 280GTX. That should hold me fine for the next few years.

It will definitely be significantly higher than oblivion, that game is 5 years old.

I'm actually building mine this week. While I had planned to wait another year or so, to coincide with the release of Skyrim and Guild Wars 2 (whenever that's done), my brother needs a new machine badly, so I'm selling him mine for a couple hundred bucks and putting that toward something a bit newer.

It'll obviously be a bit dated in a year, but I figure a quad core combined with a current $200 GPU should still play it better than my 360 will.

I'll buy a new rig sometime in September/October. I was waiting (hoping!) for the TESV announcement before deciding when to upgrade.

No, I bought my computer 2009 and I can play most games on High or Highest with 1680x1050 resolution.

I'll be getting a new computer sometime mid-next year. Not necessarily for TES:V (or Deus Ex: Human Revolution), but it will be very helpful.

No, I use a laptop for all my gaming.

I'm currently praying to all gods above and below Nirn that my current laptop will be powerful enough to run TES:V.

Sounds like you might as well just build a completely new system. I go on the 40% rule.

I know mods makes the game better but there will probably not be much of interest on the modding scene the first year anyway. Not to mention I can't afford getting myself a gaming rig just to play one game in first class style.
