Are you going to "Blind" TES V?

Post » Tue Mar 15, 2011 4:37 am

As far as quests and stuff go, yeah, definitely. But I want to know stuff about the AI, graphics, lore, setting, combat, magic, gameplay elements, etc.. before I pick it up. Which basically means I should know as much about the quests and everything as the internets do when I get it on release day as that information won't be available until then.

I went in "blind as a bat" for Oblivion, Fallout 3, and New Vegas, I don't see it changing now, since it would only ruin the fun of finding out for yourself.

I want to know some basic game mechanics and info. How will the spell system work, what kind of level scaling will there be, what does dialogue with NPCs look like, how does the game world look. That sort of thing. And a basic premise for the main quest.

I will avoid extensive gameplay videos and detailled quest examples. I didn't follow it for New Vegas either (I still know next to nothing about this 'Mr House' figure who's name popped up on the forums a lot before the release) and I'm happy for it.

I think I remember seeing the NV strategy guide getting leaked before New Vegas was released, and some people wanted to know all about it, trying to find as much info as possible. What's the fun in playing a game for the first time, running into quests and then thinking 'Oh yeah I saw/read this part in a preview' ?

I won't look up anything on UESP, just watch pre-release screenshots and gameplay videos.

Same with me. I did this to Fallout New Vegas and it became as a brilliant and immersive experience. :goodjob:

I'd love to, but its not going to happen. Between lore and modding I'll end up spoiling the game for myself, like I did with Oblivion.

Of course, I've never heard of "Blinding" but I Blind just about every game I play.

Haha, IMO we shouldn't have to classify playing the game the way it's meant to be played as "Blinding", but classify playing the game the way it's not meant to be played as "Sighting".

Only if I can't find myself in-game. I want to hear what I have to say. Other than that, I will indeed be going in blind... until I get frustrated with something. That's what usually happens.

Yeah, that's basically what I use UESP for.

I got the official guide for Morrowind and it was an indispensable tool. When Oblivion came out I thought "I'll surely pick up the guide, as TES is sometimes ver vague in quests." I only used the guide in last-ditch situations in Morrowind, and I never used the guide in Oblivion because Bethesda implemented the whole red arrow system. I won't use the guide for my first playthrough of Skyrim, as Bethesda will probably keep the same overly easy system that discourages thinking for yourself and exploring. I know it won't happen, but I'd love to see a return to a less casual friendly style. I'm sure Skyrim is going to be masterful, but I'm sick of games coddling players and holding their hands every step of the way. Maybe Bethesda could include a mode that doesn't mark everything for you?

I will not look up quests, but other stuff like screens and generic game play video or using early word of race and birth sign stats to speed along the character creation is OK imo.

It's possible. I'm currently doing it with The Witcher 2.

There was not much to discover with Oblivion. I used the internet for Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas a lot. I only used the internet to find out how to get Fin Gleam. Then after beating the game 3124890 times i used the internet to find the best leveled treasure :(

I plan to blind it, for one it makes the game feel longer when you blunder around aimlessly (remembers looking for balmora at the beginning of morrowind for two days straight). It also feels much more rewarding when you finally get past the parts you were stuck on.

I hope to be able to avoid the UESP for as long as possible with skyrim.

I won't look up any of the information while playing, but what I know from previous games will spoil me somewhat.

For what it's worth, I hope all the speculation so far is wrong, so it'll be more of a surprise. (The actual lore buffs are probably going to fill in all the blanks.) It's so fun to think about it, though >.>

yes, I always do. I might do a bit of reasearch for a second/third play through and certainly getting the Morrowind guide helped to unveil some extra quests/approaches on a third/fourth playthrough.

This. I don't see why anyone would read everything about the game and then just enjoy the graphics and sounds (Because that's all that would be left).
Of course I'll check the screenshots and videos when they come out, but only turn to the UESP when I'm done discovering the main things with only the intricacies left to explore.

Going 'blind' is the only way to go when it comes to RPGs. That's what I'll do. :)

I never look up stuff on the game other than maybe a little bit of gameplay and trailers, but nothing too major.

I almost always go blind with my games. Maybe on a second or third playthrough I'll start looking for help on the web to find items that I had no idea were there.

I wouldn't use the Wiki, but any trailers, teasers, artwork, screenshots, interviews and speculation on here will probably be devoured by me :) As the game will probably come out later here though, I'll stay away from the "cheats and spoilers" section when it pops up.

I'll try, I'll probably start really evading info when they start revealing more than gameplay and what not.

Absolutely. For at least one full character. I was more patient with TES IV, fielding three full-game characters before coming to these forums.
