Are you going to do everything with one character?

Post » Tue Mar 15, 2011 3:38 am

What I thought funny about oblivion was, that there was really no consequences for doing anything.

So you killed someone and are apart of the Dark Brotherhood, that doesn't stop you from becoming arch-mage, guildmaster of the fighters guild, the gray fox, a vampire, and the savior of the world .

There was no consequences for joining certain factions, like in morrowind, and there was pretty much no consequences for doing anything at all, all the important NPCs would just fall unconscious, rather than die.

Despite that, I probably will do everything I can with one character (hopefully there will limitations like in MW).

Being able to do everything with 1 character is boring. I liked how MW restricted me, and required me to make other characters if I wanted to experience other organizations.

Being that I set some pretty strong limits for myself when playing my namesake character, I think in order to fully experience the world of Skyrim I'm going to need a few characters. After all, with a mandate not to steal or disturb tombs, and being a former member of the Morag Tong and therefore rather unfriendly to the DB, there's a good few things I can't do with Solitha. I'll probably need at the very least a spellthief, if not a couple other characters.

In my opinion, doing everything with one character "kills" roleplay and seriously detracts from these type of games.

Agreed. Almost no consequences. That was a big weakness of Oblivion. Some people like that. And Bethesda is making sounds like that want to continue the "no consequences" thing. But I think it detracts from the game.

I'll make one character to run through the MQ on, then when I beat that I will make a new character where I will actually take my time, and explore, do side quests, collect, etc.

Both 1 and 2. With my first character, I'll do everything I can with that one character. After that, I'll re-evaluate that character to be my main character, then make specific characters designed for specific archetypes.

When I first started playing ES that would always be my goal. Be the hero of the story line, join and lead every faction, finish every quest, collect every item, etc etc.

Eventually I found this kind of playing strange and unreasonable. Anymore I create a character and give that character their own personality from which they decide what to do or join. A person in Tamriel probably wouldn't be interested in joining and doing everything. That's something a completionist video game player would do. So anymore I think of how my character will be and play with that in mind exclusively.

A character for every archetype.

I don't mind if it [doing everything on one character] can be done, since I probably won't anyway; but tighter and more consistent quests and quest progressions can be written in an environment where it's accepted that some characters simply can't do certain things, whether as a result of their abilities or previous choices.

I have always and will always do

1- Assassin/Thief/Rogue
1- Spellcaster (Strictly speaking)
1- Warrior

I like to keep all my different characters VERY different, and don't care for much of the "blended classes" like Spellswords or Sorcerers who use heavy armor and all that stuff. I'm very "one discipline" oriented when it comes to playing games like this. That's why I hate Fable so much. Switching between melee, guns, and magic is so stupid.

One mage, one warrior (who does main quest), one assassin/thief, basically.

I like having several character as opposed to one who does everything. It seemed strange to me that my Nord Warrior could become Arch-Mage without ever casting spells.

Nice....

1 Combat Walkthough is like COD with assult rifles

1 Stealth Walkthrough is like COD with handguns only (as ballistic knives and tomahawks kill in one shot no to realistic for me)

I have a hard time replaying games of this size... normally I go through doing almost everything I can... and within 2 to 3 years later I will replay for nostalgia.

In terms of story/factions, I wouldn't mind if its like New Vegas where you can't just join every faction or do everything... as they care who you are aligned with and what you've done.

In terms of character, you can't really do everything/become best at everything as there is a perk cap.

A "pantheon" of characters?

Did you by chance mean "plethora?"

Depending on how the game is set up, I tend to do most everything with one character on the first play through. I do this for various reasons, but bug discovery is the most prevalent. Gotta help you guys out.

Subsequent characters are the ones that get specialized.

I always try to max out everything I can with each character, so unless there are conflicting storylines I'll beat everything with my first character, before making my second character, and then eventually my third master character. By the time I make my third character I always select the skills I found to be most useful and fun to level, and I always take my time with the third one, partially because I've already seen everything twice before, and also because I try to make that character last until Bethesda makes a new game.

Why does it seem like everyone these days tries to equate everything to CoD? I like CoD for what it is (imo), which is an online FPS.

I run with 2 characters

Female Breton Mage
Male Redguard Mercenary

And I don't bother with the darker missions or the thieving ones - I prefer to play in character and by old school alignment systems of being neutral good

In oblivion my first character (melee) started out as good, doing all the good things and completeing the main quest. then he became evil, turning his back on all, and then completed all the bad things. my second play through my character is (archer/stealth) evil and is completing all the evil things first. then he will find goodness in his heart and complete all the good things like the main quest. Skyrim wont be like this at all. it has perks. so ill have to choose a character to flow with the perks, probably stealth based dual weilding dagger type, and ill complete everything then it will be time to try it with different perks but here is the rule. i wont take the same perk twice. this way i get to experience everything completely different. not to mention the different races available. I could play these games a hundred times and each time it would be slightly different.

so really its going to be a yes to all the above in the pole.

As most people say, Jack of all trades kill the RPG experience.
And I greatly agree. With the perk system, it forces players to play many other characters to experience everything.
Doing everything with only 1 character is not fun at all.

I'll be making 3 characters for sure. Nord Warrior, Altmer Mage, and Bosmer Assassin.
After that, who knows. But those 3 are definite. And I wont do everything on each, Ill do whatever pertains to each character.

I'm really hoping there will be some restrictions that will prevent me from becoming the Arch-Mage, the head of the Fighters Guild, the leader of the Dark Brotherhood, AND the Grey Fox, all with the same character. Really conflicting and awfully dull, if you ask me....
