Are you hardcoe enough for Skyrim?

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 1:41 pm

Mount and blade has an alternative which is just as hardcoe but allows you to carry on....you cant die, you're immortal, but if you are defeated it saves the game and you are forced to live with the consequences

personally if perma death was in I'd use it on alternative characters with different playstyles, whilst using the regualr method of reloading saves to get through the story

Meh, if it's optional I'd give it a try just for kicks. Who knows, it could make me play more cautiously and treat every encounter more seriously. Actually, the more I think about it the more I like the idea.

I'd like to see permanent death as an option, but Skyrim aims for wider audience than the Witcher 2, which is primarily a mature PC title for RPG veterans. I doubt that you'll see hardcoe option like this in Skyrim.

I cans see how this might fit in some games but I don't think this would really fit in skyrim. :)

Self imposed 'dead is dead' sytems are better than forced ones. If I die because I'm distracted by a phonecall or something else, or because of a bug, I'd be pretty frustrated if I lost my save permanently because of it. Whereas if it's a self imposed rule I can just reload the game in that situation.

Permadeath is irrational enough in mindless-action-grinders like Diablo or Sacred, but at least there it's not a big issue - after all, the games are mindless action grinders, arcade games effectively. Giving them a "how far can you get on one quarter" mode can at least seem to make sense from some skewed point of view.

But in a story-and-exploration-based RPG? With 100+ hour playthroughs? That's nuts. It's not "hardcoe", it's maschism. It's fratguys saying "Look how tough I am! .... hey, how'd I end up in this hospital?" It's also for people with waaaaaay too much time on their hands. :)

(I vaguely recall a thread from some guy on the Fallout 3 forums. He claimed that loading saves after a death was "cheating", and that he didn't do it. He also said he was on hit 5th or 6th playthrough and hadn't gotten a character beyond level 7, or something like that. I don't remember exactly. That didn't sound like "fun", or "cool", or "immersive". It just sounded really, really dumb.)

Nah man, this is way too rich for my blood, I think that once you have put a certain amount of time and effort into a game a super-hardcoe mode would spoil it becuase your be playing so darn cautiously as not to die, plus if i did die and lost everything it'd cost me so much money having to buy new Xbox controllers.

Permadeath? Are you kidding me? Please no. This isn't the Witcher 2. Thankfully.

Instead of Perma-Death, what about having your character being knocked down a couple of levels, and having most of your inventory emptied?
That would add some real consequence to "death," without making the player have to restart the game from the beginning.

Why not just not reload if you die?

I've played and enjoyed Dead-is-Dead gameplay, but there are some characters I wouldn't dream of playing DiD with, mainly because I'm too attached to them.

If it's an option, sure. But it's already an option in Oblivion...your char gets killed? Delete the save. There, permadeath.

Permanent death on a game where stealing a fork calls for 20 people attacking you?

No thanks.

That's a good point. Maybe it's too tempting for some people to just reload when they die, so they want a forced permadeth.

I voted heck no because I would like to play hardcoe, but I don't want this. If it's an option by itself, sure go ahead. A better idea for hardcoe would be restricting where you could save (not just anywhere). You could only save when you sleep in a bed, for example (think of it as reaching a "safe zone") That way, if you die you don't lose 100+ hours of gameplay but you could lose 1 or 2, forcing you to not to risk fighting a dragon as you are almost back to town after having found X.

No. I really don't want this. I would love a hardcoe mode where you have to eat, drink etc. But I would want to load my game again.

Instead of perma death we should lose all we had on us and revive in a nearby chapel. Perma death adds nothing to a game.

You are all wimps! How could you even try to call it hardcoe mode without permadeath. I guess all these guys want is tamagotchi mode.

Perma Death
Pros:
New level of realism and caution the player would have to have
The Player would feel more connected with a character having guided them through numerous possible deaths.

Cons:
Accidental death such as walking into a corner oddly and becoming immobilized as the troll bludgeons you to death. ( not that there will be many glitches and holes Right Bethesda :poke:
Losing 200+ hours may cause ahem... damages :brokencomputer:

I've actually metagamed perma death into both Fallout 3 and New Vegas (Combine with playing on Very Hard for both, and hardcoe for the later).

There is just one problem. Elder Scrolls games are hardly perfect, in terms of bug control. If something in the system(And this has happened in both Fallout 3 and New Vegas) cocksup and decides to spawn a Deathclaw right on top of me at level 6, well, Kind of screwed then right?

I think I'll keep it as a metagame unless they can prevent stuff like that from happening.

And yes, I do have the Brass Balls Achievement in Bioshock.

That's a really interesting notion. but it's also a ridiculous one in the since that it would really in inhibit playing the game. you'd have to live in the shadows till you were strong enough to fight multiple opponents. Not to mention you'd probably wouldn't be able to "be who you want" because you'd be more focused on surviving rather than enjoying the game play itself.

Hmmm, I think it gives more meaning to your PC's existence, knowing that you can't be a naked guy running around punching dragons like an idiot. It does add realism, like it or not. In rel life combat and/or life-and-death situations, it's a big deal, obviously. If someone wants that to be in a TES game as an option, why not? Besides the fact that Pete and Todd discussed this seriously 11 years ago, as was mentioned earlier. They understand it, so why do so many people on this thread not get the point?

As long as it's optional, and the game makes it quite clear that the difficulty setting which does it will have this effect, I wouldn't see a problem. It annoys me even when I have to replay a whole level in a game due to dying, naturally, I'm not crazy enough to want to play a massive, long lasting game where dying even once means I have to replay from the very beginning, but as long as it only applies if you choose to play the game that way and I can still play the game normally if I so choose, then it can't really do much harm.

Myself, I like to be able to save anywhere, any time, and reload that save if I screw up myself.

^This^ Optional being the key word.

You make a good argument, and I can understand where you're coming from what with the intense battles and serious decision making, but I'm afraid I still have to strongly disagree. The negatives outweigh the positives by a country mile. That being said, it wasn't a bad suggestion. Maybe in a different game.
If the option was there, I suppose there would be a few people who would love it.

^This^ It is a good argument, especially with that "optional" part thrown in there.

Meh, if it's optional I'd give it a try just for kicks. Who knows, it could make me play more cautiously and treat every encounter more seriously. Actually, the more I think about it the more I like the idea.

And ^this^. I agree, the more I think about it, the more I like the idea as well. And to people arguing against it, stop and think: You do realize that you are arguing against a DIFFICULTY OPTION, right? That's the same as saying there should be no difficulty slider for easy or hard. Why do you think it makes sense to impose limits on the game because YOU don't play a certain way? I swear, that attitude is like a plague on this forum.....

Anyway, I personally support the idea, Redguard King. I think this would be the right kind of "hardcoe", without being annoying and tedious like "tamagotchi mode". Also, as a side note, I have never played permadeath, and I've never really cared one way or the other. But I strongly believe this would be great as an option, because it basically adds a whole new "mode of play". Basically, you could make any number of normal play characters and be very happy, but you would also have the option of trying it a different way, being in the hardcoe mode and just getting a new experience.

And as another side note, I don't die when I play TES. You could say it's because I usually have a "power character" or whatever, but it's mostly because I don't do stupid things, and I play with the mindset that I'm actually living a real life. Then again, I pretty much avoid dying in every SP (and some MP) games I play, so it's pretty much just standard procedure. I also believe there is a huge group of players out there who would enjoy having this more realistic and "hardcoe" gameplay for Skyrim. I say, go ahead Todd and Pete, you guys know it's a good idea already!

My suggestion to a hardcoe mode would be in fact that the player could choose 'how hardcoe they want to be' In that sense there could be advanced options such as magicka does not recover straight away, it could require rest or to do a task to do so. Or even to drink from water? You could put it as a choice of whether to just die and that be that. But with the thoughts on saving the game wouldn't it be easier if that didn't happen? although no one would rush in like an idiot and would actually require a thought of what they were doing. But then you would have to think of achievements that wouldn't be impossible to accomplish. Other than that i would be interested if there was a 'realism' / 'hardcoe' mode on this game. It would improve the time people would spend trying to complete it and become more of a challenge.
The one thing I would reccommend though is if there is a hardcoe mode de-activate the difficulty bar and keep it as one. You either choose at the beginning or its chosen for you because otherwise whenever someone is about to die they will turn it down to very easy and just win with no thought.
