Are You Legally Too Young To Be Playing FO3?

Yes it is. Life is basically a big gigantic RPG MMO.
You do task at your work/school (Quests)
You socialise with people (Chat)
You gain experience by doing stuff
You "level up" so to speak as you get older, wiser and stronger to handle more complex tasks.
Hell you even have game mechanics. (A.k.a. Laws of Physics)

Only 13... i'm fine :)

No it isn't really 'Explicit' because i know it's not real, not even close. It hasn't come close to scarring me, i could watch 300 (imo is much worse explicitly than FO3) and not be scared (i have watched it a few times already)

Legally? Pretty sure it isn't illegal to play rated M games if you are not 17.

Same here. I don't think they need to necesserrely experience all the "exhilaration" from tearing someone to bits and eating them (and it has nothing to do with maturity as I don't consider Fallout 3 a mature game), just an uncessery participation in virtual violence. I'm old fashioned in that regard - and also maybe a hypocrite, since I didn't apply the same rules to myself when in that age and played almost all the most violent games there were :P (and that's why I don't judge anyone).

I agree, hard for me to really judge when I grew up playing Quake and Doom 2, boy those were the days. The violence in those games was considered horrifying to my parents when I was little..... boy have times changed :).

300 is a joke :P

Try something that does violence more like Fallout 3 - like Ichi the Killer, visually the most overboard "comedic" (in a sick way) violence in the history of cinema, imo. :P

On topic...

I think the Fallout 3 violence would've been better (and more suited to the rating), if the quantity was cut down a bit - Like VATS-only or criticals-only, or something, to make it something to seek for rather than an almost constant effect (added with more animations!!!).

Yeah the violence is pretty funny, considering entire heads and limbs come off intact when you pop them off Raiders and whatever. It would be far more disturbing if guys' faces actually caved from bullet holes and other hits spouted blood realistically. Raiders rolled around screaming if you gutted them or scored a severe wound, watching them gargle on their own flui...

... that would be disturbing. So disturbing describing actual real life scenarios is disturbing on a forum. As it is, it's comic violence with nice visuals. ^_^

It's not illegal to play any game (unless it is banned by your country of course), just illegal for retailers to sell it to minors.

I'm not brainwashed by all these "Warnings" and "precautions". I don't need "Big Brother" telling me what to do, how to speak, how to treat others. Last I checked, this the United States of America was still Free (Sort-Of). I don't need a baby sitter. I'm completely free to make my own decisions. Do what I want, when I want and however I see fit. I watch violent movies, play violent games, swear, get drunk, listen to "bad" music.

Been playing games (some violent some not) since the early '80's on a Commodore 64 and an Apple IIe. Then graduated to a PC. Really got into gaming in 1993 with the release of D00M and have played ever since. I haven't hurt anyone, I also have never once been in trouble because of the types of games I play, music I listen to or the movies I watch.

So, to sum it up...no, I am not "illegal" in my age to play FO3; and if I were...who the **** cares other than the special interest, bleeding hearts and cry babies of the world? I don't.

Oh, an before you all say, "You wouldn't let your own kid play those kinds of games....and blah blah blah...."

My son is 10, has seen Saving Private Ryan, Band of Brothers, Alien, Aliens, Alien Vs. Predator, both of them. Plays GTA, Play D00M 3, FEAR, Far Cry, sits here and watches me play FP3 (the only reason he hasn't played it yet, is because I'm not done with it.) as well as other "Not For Children" because of a stupid rating games and movies.

It isn't, the ESRB is just a recommendation. If the Government came into my house seeing my 14 year old sibling playing Fallout 3, they wouldn't arrest him.

I know it's not illegal, I'm just stating that there is no actual legal age, so no one playing Fallout 3 is too young to legally be playing Fallout 3. If this thread is supposed to be about how old we are, then it was not worded correctly.

Too young?
Hardly. I'm 24.
Then again, I played FO1 and 2 when I was thirteen or so, and neither game (FO2, by the way, is in many respects far more risque than FO3) had any adverse effects upon my person, other than a temporary obsession with the Cold War.

...

Wait, I'm still obsessed with the Cold War. Never mind. >.>

As violent video games go, as far as I'm concerned you could do a lot worse than the Fallout series. A lot worse.
And that goes for both in terms of explicit material (violence, pr0nz, language, etc), and in terms of 'this game is so gorram terrible that playing it should be a crime against humanity'.
The ratings system is a bit of a joke anyway, if you ask me.
Though I know you didn't.

It isn't illegal for an under-aged person to violate ESRB's recommendations; it's illegal for a business to sell or provide an under-aged person with material which violates ESRB recommendations. You can't be 12 years old, walk into Best Buy, and pick up a game for 15+ years. They won't sell it to you. If your parents buy it for you, there's no legal problem with you playing it. Presumably your parents are better informed about what you can and cannot handle than other people.

Fallout 3 is a fairly mature game like the other Fallouts before it, more because of the gray sense of morality than the gratuitous comedy violence. Fallout 3 basically teaches you that slavery, theft, and murder are okay if you're strong enough to fight off the people that think otherwise, if you want to play it that way. You have to be mature enough to recognize that this is a hypothetical fiction and to not build your real-life value system around it.

That depends on which country you live in. In the US, it's actually perfectly legal to sell an M-rated game to someone under the age of 17, it's just that most retailers have policies against doing such.

No, I'm 25. But it does bother me that kids are playing it, but that's because I don't think they deserve to.
