I've played a hand of Caravan and won 1000 or so. So that was nice. I havent done any other gambling. My LUC is only 6, tho after a cyber mod it could be 7.

Ah, I was wondering about this, I'm starting off slow in terms of exploring new areas and I hadn't run across anything worth buying yet - it's good to know I'm actually going to need these caps. It got to the point in FO3 where I just had ridiculous amounts of caps and nothing good to spend them on.

Buy 1000 chips, keep playing, if you lose them all, reload. getting all oranges will get you like 36k.

Im lvl 15, I did not take the 'find considerable amount more ammo' and im on 10k, I have filled 2 follows up with very expensive gear for selling and im next going to sell it all and make a trip to the gun runners and buy myself some decent gear.

Edit, Ive not even been in the strip yet so I have done no gambling at all.

I'll have to give it a try. I go through stim packs like water, because I'm generally not a good player. I also go through ammo like water because I cant hit the broad-side of a barn without VATS, even with a mini gun. Therefore I throw serious cash at stimpacks and ammo and super stimpacks and the like.
