are you a veteran team based game player

Post » Wed Aug 18, 2010 6:01 pm

Anyone else bothered that people are saying they are "Veterans" of Teambased games.... and only started playing team based games for 2-3 years?

2-3 years could easily be enough time to rack up enough experience to be considered a veteran of team based FPS gaming, so no.

been in clans for Rainbow Six Vegas 1+2 & GRAW 1+2. Battlefield games have always been a fav even though not much communication going on in the two Bad Company's.

Its short tho cmon. There are games that i played for more then 5years. And to be called a veteran with a gaming history combined of 2-3 years. (only talking about team based FPS)

But no its not bothering me since everybody has a different understanding of "veteran"

I played Halo competitively, which sure as hell required teamwork and the team who worked together better often won. I wouldn't be so fast to dismiss it just because the team-based aspect isn't obvious.

There's a difference between team based and requiring teamwork. Games like TF2, MNC, CSS, BC all require you to use teamwork. Lone Wolfing it doesn't get anyone anywhere in these types of games.

Whereas Halo doesn't REQUIRE it. Sure results are better when you work as a team but the same can be said of any competitive game with team based matches. You CAN work together as a team in CTF, but you can just as easily run in, grab the flag, and get out by yourself.

its because most team based games have been for the pc. i played counter-strike, team fortress and battlefield 2 on the pc but i have ordered brink for the xbox because my pc is a bit outdated these days. so i want to know if I'm in for a terrible time on the xbox with a bunch of newbies that are just going about shooting each other and not following the main objectives.

how is 2-3 years enough to be a veteran? Veteran means "Long Service" and if that is the case what title to those who have been playing team based since for 16 years or more? =/

If someone said "I'm an FPS vet, I've been playing 2 years!!!" i would slap them.

I'm not a veteran. I have barely any FPS experience. The only online shooters I've played are CoD: MW2, TF2, L4D2 and Crysis 2. And, if I'm honest, the only ones that I've wanted to play for a long time are TF2 and L4D2 because the games becomes incredibly fun and rewarding when you work in a team. CoD is a game where you compete against people you would expect to work together with, and you have to make sure your KDR is incredibly high or you'll have an annoying, screechy ten year old call you profanities he doesn't even understand.

Long story short: I want to work in a team, because I'm playing a team-based shooter.

Well I'm very new to FPS games (as in within the last 2 years), but does MAG for near-on 1000 hours count? :whistling: As well as a bit of BF:BC and BC2, I prefer to team up with friends.

Actually, veteran generally means "experienced", the length of that experience is a matter of opinion. Enough experience to really know the ropes is all it takes to be a veteran as far as games go. What are you really going to learn (yes, we're always learning, but I mean major knowledge) beyond the first 2 years of serious FPS gaming?

Why does anybody need an extra special title for playing a game genre for more years than a few anyways? Does it bother you that you're additional experience doesn't set you apart from somebody else in title?

i thought when i wrote the word veteran that everybody would know that it means experienced. if you've only been playing a few months of the type of games I'm talking about and understand the main workings of the gameplay then you could say you were a veteran in my opinion. I'm talking gaming not the real army.

Played Cod 4 competitive myself which means S&D, but of course since it's Cod it didn't require team work.
Ignorance ++ would be intrigued again.

Wouldn't age comparative to years also play a part? And also relative dedication? I mean I always loved video games, but I've been a lot more dedicated since I started playing FPS games. MAG is the game I've racked up the longest playtime for in my entire life, and I only had it a year.

EDIT: I do suppose there's a difference between being a veteran of a specific game, and being an over-arching "FPS veteran". I'd rather call myself the former...

I've played quite a few.

Most often they've been fairly basic objectives though.

And I'm annoyed that Resistance had a couple of awesome objective modes, but hardly anyone ever played them, and they've almost completely died out now.

That's sort of what I was thinking, although I would have expected a little more than a few months, but certainly not more than a few years.

I would think yes on both, as a two year player who's only 7 probably doesn't have the appropriate understanding, but a 6 month player who's 21 but plays nonstop probably does.

I'm not worried on a personal level as I've been playing way too much for way too long, but I'm perfectly happy to include other experienced players as veterans.

as brink is a team and assist based game have you played other proper team based games before like Team fortress, counter-strike, battlefield 2 where teamwork is the name of the game. games like Cod and Halo feel like your playing yourself online so dont count. it would let us know if there will be a majority of people already clued up in this type of game that are going to be buying brink.

I have a strong back round of teamplay on 360, PS3 and PC. Too many games to mention.

I don't know if Tf2 is good example of team work. It is more of figuring out what class you as individual need to help counter what the other team is playing. Not so much as we need 3 of these 2 of these it's the counter class that matters more and you can lone wolf it in TF2 a lot ask sniper. Where Brink looks like you need all the classes and very limited lone wolfing activity.

Wouldn't call myself a veteran, but I do very much enjoy teamwork-oriented shooters. Mostly MAG and L4D/L4D2. Revived so many people in MAG...

I foolishly passed up the Orange Box though, and have recently come to regret that decision very, very much. Still not too late, I know. I'm sure I'll pick it up eventually.

I have, but you do realize that everyone has a "first time" and was once new and every new game will have it's fair share of new folks. What we need to ask ourselves is are we willing to assist such people so they too can become a veteran and enjoy the game or are we move likely to bash them and flame them?

I assure you the games that have the most helpful players end up with the greatest number of veterans playing those games.

Nope. Brink is my first online team-game.

Offline co-op (in Phantasy Star Online and Borderlands and Gears of War)? Yes, but I'm not sure if that counts, lol.
