Are You a Walker or Runner?

Post » Sat Nov 19, 2011 4:07 am

A few years ago I asked such a question when playing through Oblivion. I found it interesting that I played these games from a "slow" perspective, while my friends just rushed through things. Now I am not advocating walking as the best forum of approaching these games, truly everyone has their own play style and some enjoy the over all experience while others enjoy doing quest and beating games. However the conversation brought up between my friends and myself was why we enjoyed playing the way we did was pretty interesting.

So as per last time I asked this, I simply am trying to get an idea of how most of Skyrim players play the game. Please no flaming, and I already know I am brain damaged because I like to walk around in a video game. So that out of the way tell us how you like to play the game and why.

I definitely run about everywhere, although I do walk inside buildings. I'm not patient enough to walk long distances; I run constantly. I even sprint when I'm traveling; I'll sprint until my endurance is down to about 30% and then run while it recharges.

If you're referring to a general attitude to playing the game, though, I don't go straight for the main storyline quests myself because the side quests are very good.

In Mass Effect, I played side missions until I decided they were crap, then I concentrated on the excellent main story missions. In Mass Effect 2 they learned from criticism and now the side missions are great too, so I'm trying to do all those as well. In Oblivion I did tons of side quests until I decided I needed to see how the story turned out, and finished the main story missions (around level 30 or so).

I allways walk (in any game that supports walking) in situations where there is no immediate hurry (chase someone/something, run away form someone/something..) just as i would in real life.
In most gamees the walking is not very rewarding because the enviromnments are build with the idea of people running through them quickly. In this game however walking is very rewarding with all the detail everywhere.

Do you mean walk as in holding a button to walk or just the default movement?

I use sprint when I'm in a town and I want to get around but I just "jog" when I'm exploring. It helps me notice things and it seems to fit the general pace of the game.

I run outside a lot, run through towns I've already visited, but take it slow indoors, especially dungeons.... been spiked way too many times by traps!

I'll walk everywhere except for when in a dangerous situation. As I'm exploring a dungeon I will walk until I find enemies, then my character will know that it is dangerous and jog from there on to be alert.

I mostly walk indoors, sometimes inside cities. I'm afraid I don't have the patience to walk from one city to another, or anything like that. Maybe on my next character.

I always walk, except when in combat, chasing someone or sth similar...I mean, I use a horse for travelling but otherwise I walk to every destination, I walked to High Hrothgar too.
In dungeons, I usually sneak and walk or run.

3rd person for me and playing the game very very slowly, enjoying travelling, reading books, admiring environment / landscapes, NPC's, ...

Run when I'm outdoors or in combat, walk when I'm in a city or dungeon. Play in third person. When it comes to content completion, I just kinda go with the flow; if I'm in a city, I'll try to do everything that's in that city, but I don't make plans to systematically visit every single location to squeeze out every bit of content with one character.

I run when I have Stamina, and walk when my Stamina is low.
I run in the cities, I run in the forest, I run in the tundra, I run in the mountains, I run in those northern coast parts of jagged glaciers and ice peices.
When you have full Stamina, why walk?

I can't vote because your polls are largely biased (except for 1st/3rd person poll, but I can't just vote for one and not the others).

I don't understand what the point of "I run outside in the wilderness walk inside cities and dungeons" is.

I run in cities and sneak in wilderness/dungeons.

And where's the option for "I'll probably never finish the main quest because I'll be too busy trying to finish everything else the game has to offer." You obviously know about being a completionist as you acknowledge it in a different answer, so why wouldn't you just make an answer that has it?

For the most part I walk most everywhere In game with some running mixed in, however in Skyrim I am having difficulty doing this. Perhaps it's because it's fresh and I still haven't even scratched the surface yet.

Mixing it up. In Oblivion I was mostly using third person, but Fallout taught me the real value of using both.

I tend to take my time with it, which is why I logged over 220 hours on the same character in New Vegas, but I will not stretch it out so long that I lose interest in finishing what I started.

In the wilderness, I mix up the run/walk. If I see something interesting, I explore it thoroughly.

In ruins/dungeons, I always walk...usually sneak (thief/archer).

Also, I rarely ever fast-travel. The only time I really do is if I'm almost over-encumbered, and need to dump/sell items. Then, I fast-travel right back from where I left off.

I run normally, but sneak in dungeons. However, I don't fast travel.

I run/jog outside while exploring until I come across enemies or potentially dangerous areas such as ruins. Inside cities I also run to where I am going but walk when exploring. Walk inside buildings and dungeons unless running toward or occasionally away from a foe.

On a related side note, what are everyones thoughts on fast travel?
Personally, I dislike fast travel in these games as it breaks the immersion for me. Having said that, I have no qualms about in game modes of travelling fast such as a wagon or silt strider.

Those options have been added for you and anyone else who plays as you do. If you think I should add more options to the polls just let me know.

I consider myself a completionist but at the same time I also enjoy seeing things finished that I started. I do understand where you are coming from though I still find new things in Oblivion each time I have played it and Ive had the game since launch. I wonder what new things Skyrim will be able to offer 3 years down the road.

How do you (6 as of this writing) people have the patience to walk everywhere? I'm not criticizing, I think it's very cool- I just sort of wish I could do it. I try to walk when I'm in town, but often end up sprinting if I have "urgent" business. And I often have urgent business.

I usually walk in towns or whenever else I feel it is appropriate, mainly because I like to roleplay. <3

I walk a lot because I like to take my time with things. If I agree to bring a thing back from across the map, I like that it will seem like a major undertaking to get there and back. Otherwise the person could have just run their own errand, and quests would seem silly and irritating.

I take my hat off (if I had one) to anyone just walking absolutely everywhere, even on horseback just walking not riding. And not using a single Fast Travel! Also disabling the compass and floating quest markers. hardcoe?

Anyone out there just walking/no fast travel/no questmarkers?
