ES: Arena Objective/Direction?

Post » Mon Jan 18, 2010 8:12 am

Hello,

New to the forums and the Elder Scrolls series of games. Just got an XBOX360 for Christmas, and wanted to try some of the older ES games prior to dropping the coin on the new releases.

Wow, Arena does take me back to the old RPGs! I've successfully installed it, launched it via DOSBox, and have killed enough rats and goblins to get out of the dungeon. I am now a Nord Warrior aimlessly walking around the town of Rifkin. I've stayed in a couple of Inns, talked to a couple of wenches, drank some stout, killed a few Nightblades, and have traded in some armor and weapons at the local blacksmith.

So, what is the objective? Should I be getting out of the town of Rifkin into the countryside, or should I be looking for something specific?

Any direction would be most helpful.

For souch an old game, it has an AMAZINg amount of interactivity. I can see how it got GOY honors 15-16 years ago.

Thanks.

If you go to Hammerfell, the main quest starts somewhere around the southeastern corner of the province. I would be more specific but I haven't played Arena in awhile. You just have to ask around. Go to the palaces in larger cities and you'll eventually hit the one where the main quest starts.

Searching old memories....

The object of Arena is to have fun. But there is a main quest. You need to ask about "Fang Lair" and you have to scroll down your chat box to see it as it's just out of sight. There may be a level qualifier on starting it, don't really rememher, like you need to be lvl 2 or 3. Getting artifacts is also fun, ask about those quests. Ask npc's about 'jobs' to get a dungeon run. And there's fast travel by clicking on your world map - it's the only way to really leave town, as going out of the city gates just puts you in the local countryside. Carry Cure Disease potions at ALL times when travelling. You can die of disease in this game.

There must still be walkthrus out there somewhere.

The cutscenes with the deceased mage are important. She tells you, or at least drops strong hints, where you need to go next.

If you miss a cutscene, talk to townspeople. Your next objective, if you haven't yet gotten a bead on it, will be a conversation topic (scroll to the bottom of the conversation topics).

Arena's main quest, like all TES main quests (except perhaps Daggerfall, that sounds fun) is naff and only really a suggestion by the devs. In Arena everything else is randomised, so you are aimed towards RPing without any restrictions on character or game mechanics.

Naff! Ooh! Aah! Why, I never...ooh!

...Uh, what's "naff"? Something not good, I bet! Ooh!
