Arenas (Or lack of) Why I won't be switching from WOW

Post » Thu Mar 20, 2014 4:55 am

I've grown tired of warcraft. What once used to be fast paced gameplay where you were kept on your toes has been replaced with 5 second fights, and allowing players to respec before each match to be set up to counter other players. But it remains as the only game with the PVPrs dream of the 1+2 punch combo of some of the smoothest controls (no hicups, never feel sluggish) in the MMO industry, and 2v2,3v3, & 5v5 arenas. This makes for some fast faced on your toes gameplay. It's exciting. kept me playing for nearly 7 years.

When I first played the beta of The Elder Scrolls Online I was excited. This game has managed to match the level of smoothness you find when controlling your character in WoW. Few games have met that standard that I myself (as well as many in the online gaming community) have come to expect in our MMOs. Even more so in some areas, feels as if it had been surpassed.

When I saw all the skill lines, and that you could only pick 5+1 ulti at a time, I saw massive potential for 2v2 /3v3/4v4/5v5 type gameplay. The kind that had the potential to pick up the millions of arena only PVPr's who are clinging to WoW simply because it "is the only one" with an arena system. I thought, this is going to be the game I get into for the next decade.

And then it happened. Developer interview stating they wouldn't be having arena or small scale instanced battlegrounds, that ESO would be exclusively World PVP. My stomache sank. I canceled my WoW a few months ago in anticipation of this game. I never pre order games for exactly this reason. I was taught never to count your chickens before they hatch.

In world pvp, you die, resurrect at the spawn, then spend 2-3 minutes running trying to find an enemy. You most likely either out number whoever you find, meaning it's not very engaging or exciting, or the oposite is true and the enemy out numbers you, meaning instant death. This means you get a few seconds of disengaging player on player combat, with loads of running. Just doesn't hold the interest.

Arenas are burst of combat that last for several minutes at a time, sometimes 10-20 minutes. It's intense. You're on the edge of your seat the entire time. Especially so in the longer matches, where it's clear that it's anyones game, and that one slip up on your part could spell defeat. You don't get that type of gameplay in World PvP. Not to mention World PvP eventually dwindles to nothing as players become bored, but arena players will que up and play, week after week, year after year.

Look at twitch streams. People are willing to watch LoL matches and WoW arena. Where are the streams for GW2 World PvP? Answer is there are none. World PvP only holds the attention span of the person playing it for so long, where as Arena style pvp is captivating enough to draw spectation. I myself, will be taking a pass on ESO, as well as putting online gaming in general on hiatus for a while. That being said If an arena (or even 10-20 man battleground) system was announced, I would buy this game in a heartbeat. But as it is, I see nothing for me as a longtime hardcoe arena style player.

P.S. A damn shame that the first online venture for a franchise in which the original title was literally named "Arena" isn't going to have an Arena.

Sorry you feel that way. Have fun in Azeroth! Many fond memories of that game, but I'm done. Time to move on.

Being a DAoC veteran, I like World PvP (RvR or AvA - whatever you want to call it). However, I agree with the irony that the "Arena" franchise won't have an Arena. I don't see why there can't be both. I've seen concerns that an Arena will detract from the AvA, but I see it as a variety and a different style of combat. This isn't a gamebreaker for me, and I'll definitely be playing, but I hope it is something they will revisit at a later date. But if not, that's ok too.

It's a shame you're not even willing to give it a try. I can say from my beta experience that we had completely opposite situations. The system in ESO IMO far out ranks the arena PvP found in WoW.

I'm glad there aren't arenas. I hope you find what you're looking for elsewhere.

I had a very similar experience to the OP, running around in empty space for a long time until finally finding a zerg only to be wiped out, or being a zerg that over ran the few defenders of a castle.

However, unlike the OP, it does not deter me. I found the PvE fun enough, and frankly I've never played a "deck building" pvp system before, or this open world kind of thing, only BG's and Arenas in WoW. So for me it is a challenge to learn a brand new way to play, and I am sure I will be good at it once I "get it".

Even if I end up hating it at least the PvE is good.

Different games offer different thing to thier player base. Try to make a game that gives everything to everyone means that nobody is happy. They (the devs) just envision a different game than what you wanted. No harm or foul just not what you looked for. Doesn't make it a bad game or anything.

Edit: just to add this. Coming from daoc there is going to be small group vs group warfare. The 1v1 or similar stealth wars in some location etc. pvp can be very sand boxy. The areas and tools are there to have differing kinds of fights than zvz. And likely will happen in my opinion.

No problem op, not all games are for everyone, have you looked at wildstar ? I like the large scale siege pvp, and I found Cryodiil a blast for my own personal opnion, anf I like the fact that ESO is a little different, I have been playing mmo's since the 90's for me I welcome some change and chance to try something a bit different..

Ive been in 30 mins + fights for keeps ect... where if you dont jump into the enemy lines, it is engaging combat that keeps you on your toes. You have to be mindful of the enemy positions and work as a team to flank or avoid being flanked constantly. Sure there are zergs now and then and numbers definitly can win it in a flash, but you see them coming. If working as a team (alliance) its called retreating and hitting them elsewhere where they arent expecting OR planning the ambush/cutting off the zerg to get rid of it.

It's the Elder Scrolls franchise, Arena was just a game in that series, and the arena aspects of that game were removed in development to make it an RPG, they just never changed the name of it. If you want to point to a previous game that is more in tune with TESO, that would be Battlespire which has an online component and an arena of sorts (PvP Deathmatches)

Yeah I feel the same. But then again, Ive played since launch on and off and hardcoe in vanilla/TBC but now my body is ready to move on.

WoW is the best game ive ever played ive had SUCH epic moments during raids and pvp more than any other game at all, but the world has to keep moving.

Im annoyed by the fact there is no arenas, Not because they exist on other mmo's but because it exists on oblivion and it was one of the greatest things i saw

i was disappointed myself, but there is absolutely no way they could balance classes and specs around arena pvp, abilities have no cd in eso and some are just insanely op in pvp, a dk can chain reflective scales 3 times back-to-back into magma armor and solo stomp a wizard cleave that cant scratch him, or a nightblade archer can vanish+crouch+snipe 3 times and your healer is dead with no possible counter play. but be glad they at least broke the old cc chains of sap blind deep poly poly silence and such, one cc and you are immune for 5 secs, plus youre pvp trinket is tied to your stamina bar so you can always break cc if keep some stam on reserve.

think of it as a break the wow arena scene and have some fun in cyro sneaking around in small groups fighting over smaller objectives and avoid the zerg. post up in stealth with a few buddies behind enemy lines and pick off stragglers riding back to the fight, you can always go back to wow in wod like most people will.

Except that defeating the Grand Champion means 32,500+ deaths if you take into account all the ones you kill, all the ones your opponents killed to get to the rank they have, etc etc.

It's a shame, because you seem reasonable; unlike a lot of people who start these kind of threads, who spout unfounded, biased nonsense. I actually sympathise with your predicament, even though I'm not a huge PvP or arena fan myself.

Good-luck with whichever game you choose. I have a lot of fond memories in World of Warcraft myself, it's certainly not a bad game. Take-care.

I am aware of TES franchise. Poor wording on my part, sorry. I just meant that first game was "Arena" and one of the key features of the Imperial City in Oblivion was the "Arena".

I am with you OP, this game would draw a lot more PvPers if it had more than RvR. Unfortunately, most people on these boards despise structured PvP, as you can see by the multitude of responses already.

Here's to hoping they add some competitive structured PvP in the future. :foodndrink:

Oblivion also had a whole quest line connected to the arena.

Not every game should cater to every person.

Good luck playing WoW, was a really fun game for me several years ago.
