Argonian and Kahjitts

Post » Wed Apr 13, 2011 2:29 am

Morrowind is actually the odd game out.

In Arena, Daggerfall, and Oblivion, they were human-like.

Morrowind was the only game where they were beast-like.

True, and that's why I think Morrowind handled this best out of the currently released Elder Scrolls games. Will Skyrim do better? We'll see. I liked the way Morrowind handled Khajiit and Argonians, it really helped to stress that they were races very different from the other ones in the setting. Not just like humans and elves except with different shaped heads. In Oblivion, while the quality of the character models obviously improved, in terms of design, I felt that the Khajiit and Argonians lost some of their uniqueness, and with it, their appeal. In the podcast, though, Todd Howard did say all the races would look more distinct, so I'm hopeful that Khajiit and Argonians will get back some of their uniqueness, still, Bethesda has yet to back that statement with actual in-game images, this may be because they're doing something really impressive with the races, so they want to save it for a surprise later on, but I'm still slightly worried that it might instead mean that they don't have anything to back the statement with, and that it was just empty hype.

We haven't seen any pictures of the beast races yet so we can only hope...

Not entirely true, in one of the Hub videos, we can at one point see concept art of a figure that appears to be an Argonian, but the image is too small for us to make out many details, so it's not very helpful, and since it's concept art, there's no guarentee that the actual game will look just like that.

Well how about this one
http://www.elderscro...edguard/p15.jpg

Probably not the best example, seeing as the image is not from Morrowind at all, or even in-game. If we're going to talk about how they were in Morrowind, it would be better to post screenshots from Morrowind, an example of the Morrowind Argonians would be http://images.uesp.net/b/bb/MW-npc-Skeetul.jpg. And Khajiit looked like http://images.uesp.net/3/3f/MW-npc-AjiraFull.jpg

Keep in mind that these screenshots are both images from unmodded Morrowind, of course, so the graphics quality is obviously not very good by current standards. In Skyrim, they'll obviously look better, no one is saying they should reuse the same models, just that Bethesda should go with Morrowind's route of making the Khajiit and Argonians distinct from the other races.

I'm a fan of bestial races, but I don't mind them being slightly more humanoid either, so long as the argonians don't look like the awful frog-people they were in OB.

I think the best middle ground possibly is that Khajjit and Argonians have to have specially made boots and helmets. These would have to be worked at a leather worker for leather and fur type armors and at a blacksmith for higher class armors.

They will be more beast-like. I don't believe this is even a question. It directly coincides not only with the overall theme of the game, but with industry trends overall.

The trend has been towards darker, grittier, edgier fantasy. Dragon Age, D&D 4th Edition, the Witcher, Diablo 3. That's what people are expecting these days, it's a style that's hugely popular. Even World of Warcraft has been trying to shy away from the "plain old school" feel left over from the days of Ultima.

They don't want Xbox players to see Skyrim's races and say "interesting." They want players to say "HOLY CRAP BADASS." Badass vikings, badass dragons, badass armor... and badass races too, because savage sells. If anything, I would expect Argonians to be nothing less than draconic in appearance this time around. The scant concept art hints at it; at first glance, they look just like D&D's dragonborn race.

Trust me on this one. Just wait until you see the khajit.

Those races wouldn't just do without gloves shoes and helmets, and I don't see full assets for each race even tho it would be nice. So i Vote No on bare feet in icy skyrim. Humanoid models with different face hands feet and leg sculpt with armour that just morphs slightly to fit will probably be what we get. A little bit of me still holds out of unique beast armour but it would kinda make it harder as most gear wouldn't fit...so likely a 'no' alround.

My cat is outdoor now in the snow and manage just well :)
But yes I expect something like Oblivion, they will not make custom armors and they will not leave them without boots but they might add some hidden body sliders to adjust armor to a different body.

For all I care, Khajits could be humans with cat ears, and Argonians could be humans with scales.

an easy way to solve this problem is to simply take both races out. it also makes the game less like sesame street as well.

you... how could... you... no way!

Their to much a part of the lore. In Skyrim I want them to be what be savagely epic and beastly. I want to be afraid of them, I want them to look epic.

Thanks Selbeth and accaris, you guys gave me hope.

I hope they look a bit humanish, but at the same time keeping them animals.... I hope they can walk on all fours.... it'd be cool instead of sprinting...

I'm not a big fan of the MW khajit/argonians, because of the incapicity to wear boots and closed helmets. In Skyrim, i'd like beast races to have more unique animations. Beasts should move differently than man and mer.

To be fair, that Argonian looks pretty badass. Khajit just looks like a poor impersonation of Zorro, though.

I'd prefer them to be mostly like Oblivion but with more unique hands/feet. Perhaps 2/3 Oblivion style 1/3 Morrowind style without the crazy legs.

I remember reading that the devs said they'd be making them look more like beasts and more fearsome? I don't remember... But a more fearsome Khajiit would make my day.

"Where's that slave? Here not long ago...."

No, but seriously, they could be more beast-like. And I'd like to see some slaves that I could release, I loved it in Morrowind. :)

Morrowind was the last Bastion of Slavery in the Empire, more or less.

And with recent Political Upheval circa oblivion, not even Morrowind allows slavery anymore.

oh thats not a problem. i have spent countless hours dreaming up ways of getting rid of both argonians and khajits in both lore friendly and not so lore friendly ways. if they made argonians completely bestial like the trandoshans from star wars or the lizardmen from the NWN games then i might not have a problem with them since they would be way less humanlike which is a big hang up with me. if your going to make a beast race then dont make it something thats cutesy and looks like something i see when im babysitting on qubo or nickelodeon.

unfortunately for khajits they just looks stupid no matter what. even the "cool" looking ones like the kilrathi from the wing commander games/movie *barf* just look silly. perhaps its because i own a cat and cant help but thinking of chloe whenever i see a khajit. they look like something that belongs in one of the japanese animes or some kids cartoon on saturday..........they are stupid.

I think there should be some drawback to Argonians for the sake of balance. Immunity to Poison (or was it mega-resistance?) and Water Breathing? I honestly don't know why people chose to play as anything else.

I loved the Morrowind Khajiit. The lack of ability to wear boots made perfect sense as well. I mean, not just because of the bone structure, but because what animal realistically wears boots?! Even in disney movies, they go pantless and bootless, usually. :P
Puss in Boots, aside.

However, it's never a bad thing to offer more armor options, including specially tailored boots, or foot wraps (i like the idea of that far better than boots), though, for the beast races. I'm just hoping they look more beast like...

Wtf?

Regarding the Argonians I love the concept art for the Skyrim Argonian...looks so...mystical. I'm more excited than ever to try out the different races.
