Argonians - beast races anatomy

Post » Tue Nov 09, 2010 11:15 am

Because it disallowed boots. Greater speed will only pay off a little at early levels, but after awhile most characters are more than competent runners.

This could be easily fixed by simply providing some Beast armor options in the game.

Little history about Morrowind. Beast Race were not playable at first when they are making Morrowind and near the end, Both beast race were added due to their poplur demand, but they did not have time to add in boot for those legs. Having beast leg does not really automatically "restrict" wearing foot wear, not to mention such wear is already possible via mod in Morrowind.

The Argonian looks fantastic in the concept art; he seems closer to a classic lizardman sort of look, which is a huge improvement over Morrowind's or Oblivion's. I think it's the tail that really wins it for the design, but I agree that his feet look more bestial/reptilian than if he had completely human-like legs.

I also think we can put a fair bit of stock in this concept art - while not everything will be used, it's not as if Bethesda tell the artists, "hey, paint some cool TES stuff and we'll pick out some things we like for the game!" They'll be given fairly specific things to work on, I would think... things that Beth already want in the game. That combined with how good the (human) characters in screenshots look, leaves me very optimistic about the character design overall.

I also see the extra joint. Even if still a concept art, I really like how it looks. Imagine how good they'll look with their slave bracers on.

I was just about to post about that. They don't look as extreme as in morrowind, but it dosen't look like ordinary human legs

Given the capabilities of the Havok Behavior system they can still animate them the same way as humans (theres a video showing how can you apply the same animation on a different character with different skeleton)

I hope you guys are right with the joints, I'd definitely love to see them that way.

Looks like it's wearing some sort of shin armour to me that just exaggerates the size of it's calf area. I used to get complained at cos it looked like i couldn't straighten my leg but i just had large calves. We'll just have to see.
Ps. I think it looks great.

I hardly see not being able to wear boots as a disadvantage worth crying over, it's called compromise.

In Skyrim?

I can't imagine seeing 1 Argonian up North if they can't have any boots.

This concept art looks promising, its a little bit blurry and we still dont know how they will look in the final release, but it realy looks like a nice compromise of Oblivion and Morrowind styles so far. I am filled with hope on this one.

I like the look on that concept art. At least the fear that they do not have a human head with scale painted on the face is off my mind.

They never had that.

Didn't know that about Morrowind, but that was sort of my point. So long as they accommodate Beast races with their own armor options it's cool.

What compromise?

Thinking worst case scenario here. Something along the line like http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Arena:Races#Argonian comes into mind.

They're calves, I'm almost entirely certain that we won't be getting bent legs. It's a shame, I would have preferred a compromise, something like http://www.nimajneb.com/images/hvn/draenei_anatomy.JPG Without the hooves obviously, they don't need to be any more bent than that.

Me too. If they have human legs at least I hope they have a different walking animation. So you can tell instantly from their walk that they are not human.

Funny how everyone comments on the Argonians shape and such, but not on the stick (spear!) in his claws!

I'm glad they didn't go the Morrowind route from the looks of it. We haven't seen close-ups of unarmored hands/feet but I have a good feeling about it.

Looks about right to me, but then again maybe i'm biased because I'd far rather they were humanoid style legs than the beast-style we saw in Morrowind.

Either way, the concept art looks incredible, and whether the legs are beast-style or humanoid, if they look similar to the art i'll be happy.
