Argonians seem, based on bits from the novels, to have been pretty average amphibians living in pools and ponds when the Hist decided "don't bipedalism seem cool?"

The initial design had Argonians not be repitles but an amphibian race that share both repitilian and aquarian fish like characteristics.
But their design became more and more lizard like,and with Skyrim they now look more like dinosauroids.
