Found the diary now and also found the way out in that cavern. Before that I didn't know there was another way out in the cavern and just ran all the way back from where I came. I loaded my save from before and got it right now.
I've only gotten a little bit further since I posted this. I got done with that part but now I'm not sure what to do. I've been exploring the rest of the land some and

I'm going to try looking through a walkthru I found.even found a gate I was able to open with a scroll that led me to another room where I could explore other areas. I'm not sure what to do to continue the quest now. I joined the city guard and found a hunter's guild, but so far it's just been for side quests.
I've also gotten some mods to work with this with help from TES Dependency Tool Kit.
edit - Well I just looked thru the walkthru I found and it only went up to getting to Stormwend.
